From the Desk of the Principal
I am very pleased to tell you that all beginning of the year assessments are complete, and we feel we have a good handle on the areas of relative strength and weakness for our students. Your first opportunity to formally see how your child is doing so far this year is coming up in two week. On Thursday, October 12th, first quarter interim progress reports are coming home. The interim progress reports will let you know if your child’s work and work habits are satisfactory or in need of improvement. Please take some time to discuss the interim report with your child and go over successes and areas for improvement.
MAP Testing:
MAP testing begins Monday, October 2nd and continues throughout the month for grades 1 – 5. MAP testing will not impact our school-wide schedule because students will take the assessment during their designated math and reading time.
Fall Festival:
The Fall Festival is fast approaching! RAIN or SHINE, we hope you can come join us tomorrow, Friday, October 13th from 6:30-8:30 pm. Wristbands can be purchased at the door for $15 and can be paid for by cash or check. This Lisbon tradition is in its 20th year and is one of our exciting and fun events! Please join us for games, food and fun!
Picture Day:
Strawbridge Studios will be at Lisbon Elementary on Thursday, October 5th. ALL students will be photographed for the memory book. Picture flyers have been sent home with your child(ren).
Board of Education Approves 2017-18 School Calendar Change
The Howard County Board of Education has approved a change to the 2017–2018 school calendar making the last three days of school for students—June 12–14, 2018—three-hour early dismissal days for all levels, including elementary, middle and high schools. The updated calendar provides additional time for teachers and administrators to fulfill their fourth quarter grading and reporting responsibilities.
In the previous calendar, only high schools had three early dismissal days, June 12–14, and middle and elementary schools had only one on June 14.
Important Policy Information:
A Student/Parent Handbook 2017-2018 was sent home to every family the first day of school with important policies for parents and student to become familiar with. We would like to communicate some of these policies
Attendance (Policy 9010)
Regular daily attendance is vital to the continuity of classroom instruction and participation in school activities. Therefore, students are required to be in school or to be attending a school activity each day school is in session. In recognition that situations do arise that necessitate absence from school, the Board of Education allow students to be lawfully absent for a death in the family, illness, a court summons, hazardous weather as determined by the Superintendent, work release, religious obligation, declared State emergencies, suspension, or for other emergencies or set of circumstances which in the judgment of the Superintendent or designee constitutes a good and sufficient cause for absence.
Civility (Policy 1000)
The Board has set clear expectations for civil behavior that supports a safe, engaging, and supportive environment on school property and at school-related activities. Unacceptable behaviors include but are not limited to:
Rude, insulting, or demeaning language and/or actions.
Persistently unreasonable demands.
Intrusive and/or interruptive behavior.
Displays of temper.
Harassment and intimidation.
Threatening and/or abusive gestures and behavior.
Each individual is responsible for behaving in a civil manner and for cooperating in resolving incidents of uncivil behavior.
When resolution is not reached through cooperative agreement, either party involved may cite this policy and notify the other person that they are ending the conversation or the interaction and removing themselves from the situation by ending a phone call, walking out of the room, or requesting the other individual to leave the room.

Box Tops for Education
It's time to start clipping and turning in those Box Tops! Last year we raised $1,070 for our school. This year our goal is $1,200! When our goal is reached we will have a school wide celebration (TBD).
Each Box Top is worth 10 cents. You can find Box Tops on many family products such as frozen, canned or boxed foods, cleaning supplies, paper products and much more. Please visit btfe.com for a complete list of participating brands.
What do YOU need to do? All you need to do is start clipping, saving and sending in your Box Tops. Deadline for our first submission is Monday, October 23rd. Please remember to clip your Box Tops on the dotted line, and check the expiration. Be sure to download the BTFE App for other savings and opportunities to earn more for our school. Thank you for your support. Happy Clipping!
School Bank Opens
Dear Parents/Guardians,
Lisbon Elementary School is will be starting our In-School Banking Program again this year. We recognize that there are many aspects of banking including, but limited to, financial literacy, investing, and maintaining an account. Lisbon Elementary will again partner with Sandy Spring Bank to give our students the opportunity to open a savings account or continue their savings program right here at school. The primary focus of this program is to provide hands-on experience with making a deposit, maintaining an account, learning how savings grow over time and using basic math skills in a “real world” situation.
If you would like for your child to participate in this savings program we ask that you complete the Sandy Dog’s Savings Club Information Sheet that can be found at the Sandy Spring Bank website (www.sandyspringbank.com). In order to participate, please complete this sheet and return to school or drop it off at the local Sandy Spring Bank branch office. This sheet will give you the information you need to officially
open a Young Savers account for your child at Sandy Spring Bank. The minimum opening deposit is $10.00, with any deposit amount thereafter.
The account will be a custodial account for minors. The only person authorized to withdraw from the account on behalf of your child will be the parent or guardian designated as the custodian on the account. The account will belong to your child under the Uniform Transfer to Minors Act and currently has no monthly maintenance fee until he or she reaches age 21. Complete disclosure and signature cards will be mailed as soon as the bank receives a completed Sandy Dog’s Savings Club Information Sheet.
If your child is already a Young Saver at Sandy Spring Bank, simply return the form with your name on the “Custodian’s name” line and your child’s name on the “minor’s Names” line so that your child may participate in our school’s program.
Sandy Spring Bank and Lisbon Elementary are excited to be able to offer this program. We believe this opportunity will enhance our students’ learning here at Lisbon Elementary. If you have any questions about the program, please contact the Lisbon Community Office at 301-774-6400 ext.6446 or me at 410-313-5506.
Sincerely,
Amy Green
Assistant Principal
Walking Wednesdays
-Sponsored by the Lisbon PTA
Walking Wednesdays is a FUN recess program designed to get you moving in a healthy, exciting and rewarding way!
Kids!
During recess on Wednesdays between September 20th and November 8th (dependent on the weather) you will have the opportunity to walk or run around a course near the playground. Why?
- Each time you walk two miles, you will be rewarded with a foot charm! ( special charms rewarded for milestones such as marathon)
- The more we walk, the more fit we will become!
- Invite your parents to walk or help out on Wednesdays so you can show them how much fun we are having!
Parents!
You are invited to walk with your child on any Walking Wednesday during the program. You can also earn charms. What a great way to encourage your child and be a healthy role model at the same time! When you come to the school, please sign in at the front office and then walk to the blacktop area at the back of the school. This program requires many parent volunteers. If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer experience, please read on…
This fall you will still be able to walk outside of the school up to one mile each week during Walking Wednesdays. We will also still give bike charms for riding five miles at home! Forms for walking or riding at home will be sent home soon.
Children will keep their foot charms on a necklace. Each child will be given their first necklace free. If this chain is lost, your child can purchase another one during recess for $.50 per chain. Please remember to send your child with money. Your child will not be able to purchase or replace the charms that he/she has lost.
Athletic shoes are recommended but not required to participate in Walking Wednesdays.
Calling all Lisbon Elementary Parents...
