BELONG ~ BELIEVE ~ ACHIEVE
Hello Wildcat Students, Staff, and Families!
I hope everyone had a wonderful break and ready for school tomorrow!
We have many exciting events going on over the next few week so please make sure to mark your calendars. We will be holding tryouts for boys' soccer on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week with the team being announced on Thursday. Girls' basketball tryouts will start next Monday 3/4. We also have our Art Show submissions due by March 15 and the show will be on 5/1.
Sullivan parents are vital partners in our school community. We have many opportunities for our parents to be involved at SMS and help provide feedback to inform our programs. Be sure to watch announcements for the School Site Council, English Language Advisory committee, the Native Learner Advisory Committee, and our PTO meetings.
Thank you to all the parents who provided feedback through out surveys over the last month! We appreciate your input.
Lastly, On March 11 during the school day and on March 14 in the evening SMS and BHS will be holding a combined LCAP forum for parents to provide feedback on BUSD'S planning and programs for the upcoming years. A separate flyer will be distributed later this week with the times and locations. Please plan to attend, as we look forward to your input.
We are Wildcats! Have a great week!

Let Me Introduce our New Wildcat Staff Members!
I would like to welcome John Norton, who will be serving as Sullivan's Assistant Principal, replacing Mrs. Hernandez. We also have a few newer but not brand new additions to our family, Jennifer Gilmer and Javier Hernandez, who are both serving as paraprofessionals at Sullivan Middle! Welcome to the SMS Family!
John Norton: Assistant Principal
Greetings SMS Family,
My name is Mr. John Norton and I am the new administrator at SMS supporting Mrs. James and the team. Thank you all for a great first few weeks! One thing you will learn about me is that I love being an educator. I am beyond excited to serve the Bonsall community and uphold its values and high expectations. I have a little over two decades of experience leading staff and families while designing and implementing student learning in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego County. I have had the honor to serve students in California and abroad from preschool to college as both a teacher and an administrator, during which I have earned two master’s degrees in education. I currently oversee our Expanded Learning Division which supports our before and after school programs, after school enrichment offerings, our BUSD Farm, the Animal Science Internships at Rawhide Ranch, School Safety for the district, and more. I know that I can be a valuable team member in supporting students and faculty while embodying the elevated expectations that Bonsall Unified resonates throughout the district.
Being brought up in a military family, having traveled all over the world, I bring a plethora of cultural and educational experience to this position. I am also a proud parent of a high school student and a college student. I love dogs and horses, camping, and exploring off grid in the backcountry. If I'm not in the mountains you'll find me at the beach, on the soccer field, or taking an adventure. Don't even get me started on good food and live music... :)) I look forward to being part of the team here at Sullivan... Go Wildcats!!
Jennifer Gilmer: Paraprofessional for the Mild to Moderate Special Education Classes and Support.
"I am a paraprofessional for the mild to moderate special education program at Sullivan Middle School. I have been working here since the beginning of October and I enjoying working with the kids and the staff. I am a mother of a 17 month old little boy who is my whole world and most of my free time is spent chasing him down and keeping him from getting into trouble. I love going to the beach and doing craft projects when I have the time. I do lots of crocheting and I am learning how to do bead work and paint."
~Jennifer Gilmer
Javier Hernandez
“Hello Wildcats!! My name is Javier Hernandez and also know as Mr. Javi. I am part of the Room 39 team. Here’s a little bit about myself. My favorites sports to play are volleyball and soccer. I enjoy watching anime and playing videos games on the PS5 or Nintendo switch. I love being an educator and seeing the endless potential of each student. I’m glad to be a part of the SMS community and have been welcomed from the very start. If y’all ever see me around feel free to say hi and I’ll say it back!”
6th Grade China Banquet! Thank you parents for your help!
SMS 6th grade students studied the development of civilization in Ancient China. They learned about the major philosophies, physical geography, and leadership that shaped the culture. While doing so, students worked in teams we called ‘dynasties’ to earn ‘civil service credit’. They sat together, completed projects together, and found ways to honor their dynasty in service of their empress or emperor (teachers). The group with the most civil service credit won a seat at the Mandate of Heaven tables at the China Banquet where parents generously donated to have the feast catered by Panda Express. On the day of the banquet, all 6th graders were invited to join in the ASB Leadership class for some fun and games while parent volunteers and teachers set up the festive banquet. Mrs. Ledri’s art classes made Chinese lanterns that hung above the banquet, and a custom painted dragon that stretched the length of the 6th grade wing. It looked awesome, the food was great, and the fun was legendary.

Important information from the California Department of Education.
BUSD Families,
The California Department of Education passed legislation this past July that all school districts must remind parents and legal guardians of all students in the Bonsall Unified School District of their responsibilities for keeping firearms out of the hands of children as required by California law. Please take a moment to review the memo below.

SECURED CAMPUS AND ENTRANCE INFORMATION
ATTENTION PARENTS!
We are excited to announce that we extended our safety and security for all staff and students by installing a fence around the front of our school! Visitors will be required to bring ID and check in at the Welcome Booth before anyone is permitted on campus.
Only emergency vehicles, buses, those with handicap placards, and those with other special placards have access to the upper lot, emergency lane closest to the front of our schools. You will need to show your placard to Campus Security.
This decision to enforce our existing parking lot plan aligns with the recommendations of our community safety partners and will increase our ability to maintain a safe and secure site:
- When dropping students off, please use the lower levels of the parking lot.
- When visiting either the middle or the high school office, please park in the lower levels, bring your ID to the Welcome booth, and check in with the appropriate staff.
We appreciate your partnership and support in our efforts to provide the highest levels of safety for our students
