Today Is...
Native American Heritage Month~ November is Native American Heritage Month! Also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, this is a time to recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous people. National Native American Heritage Month was recognized federally for the first time in the United States in 1990.
~The indigenous people of the Americas first domesticated the strain of maize which produces popcorn thousands of years ago. In fact, popcorn artifacts dating back to 6.700 years ago were discovered in Peru. So the next time you grab a handful of your favorite snack, remember it’s not just Orville Redenbacher you should be thanking.
~If you’re a hockey fan, you may be unaware you have the Saux, Foxes, and Assiniboine people to thank. They were among the Native American tribes who played a game called “shinny.” In shinny, a buckskin ball was hit down the field using a curved stick. In the winter months, the game was played over ice. White settlers took note and over time, shinny was developed into the modern sport we call hockey.
~In the movies, male Native American warriors rode off to battle while their female counterparts remained behind to cook, sew, and take care of the camp. In real life, this wasn’t always the case. Many warrior Native American women fought alongside men. The most famous of these was probably Buffalo Calf Road Woman, a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe who fought in the Battle of the Rosebud and the Battle of Little Bighorn. In fact, according to the elders of the Northern Cheyenne tribe, it was she who dealt Custer his final deadly blow. Buffalo Calf Road Woman is just one of many incredible women you didn't learn about in your history book.

CNA TRAINING
Attention 15 - 18 year old Students:
If you have any interest in learning more about obtaining your CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) license for free while working at the Omro Care Center, please sign up for the "Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)" Session during Fox Time on Tuesday, December 5th. FREE Firefighting class...Read to learn more!
Attention Juniors and Seniors: Do you have an interest in a career in firefighting? Would you like to get a jumpstart on your future career - for FREE? If you are interested in taking a firefighting class (Firefighting I) through Fox Valley Technical College next semester, please contact Ms. Williams in the Guidance Office for more details. Classes are held at Winneconne High School and the Winneconne Fire Dept. location.
Shopping Day with Kids
Shopping Day with Kids is coming soon. If you don't know what SDWK is, it is a program that has been in Omro for over 25 years. High School students are paired with elementary students who might need a little help to have a good Christmas. With donations from the community, the Big Kids and Littles get to share breakfast, go shopping for the littles, come back and wrap the gifts, and then enjoy lunch together. It is a beautiful and special morning. This year, SDWK will be held on Saturday, December 2, from 7:30 am until noon. We need high school students to shop with the littles, help set up at OES, serve the food and clean up. If you are interested in helping with Shopping Day with Kids, please see Mrs. Miller or Mrs. Kennedy for an application. You can also pick up an application in the office!

A parent can access the the work permit site using these instructions. Payment is made directly to the department through the application, using a credit or debit card or by ACH direct withdrawal. Once the permit application process is complete, the Department mails a paper copy of the permit directly to the employer. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact by email at workpermits@dwd.wisconsin.gov.

Wisconsin Labor History Society's Essay Contest
All Wisconsin high school students (grades 9-12) are eligible to participate in a High School Essay Contest conducted annually by the Wisconsin Labor History Society. The high school students are asked to write an essay of approximately 750 words on the following theme: “Unions are good for my family, my community, and my nation because . . .” and up to eight cash prizes are awarded for the best. The prizes will include one $500 first-place prize, one $300 second-place prize, one $200 third-place prize, and up to five $100 prizes for honorable mention.
WHAT TO WRITE ABOUT . . .
All Wisconsin high school students have ready access to labor history. Check with parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts. Also, neighbors and family friends. Ask to interview them and then write your essay. Only 750 words. Also you may do independent research on topics of labor history. Check the Wisconsin Labor History website (www.wisconsinlaborhistory.org) for resources and other ideas.
CONTEST RULES . . .
Essays should be approximately 750 words in length. They will be judged on understanding, evidence of original research, writing style and significance. Essays must be submitted by email in Microsoft Word or as PDF file. Submissions must include a cover sheet with the following information: Your name, address, home telephone number, your email address, your grade in school, name and address of your school, and, if you were encouraged or assisted by a teacher, the teacher’s name. (Also, list your family’s union membership, if applicable.) If you have any questions, contact: Harvey J. Kaye at kayeh@uwgb.edu.

Fox Time with Griffin
“Fox Time with Griffin” will be offered once per week. Just a reminder...
Work Permits Are Available ONLINE ONLY
As you may have heard, the Department of Workforce Development's Equal Rights Division has developed a new online work permit application tool. The Division carefully considered the lessons of the past few years, when pandemic restrictions made it nearly impossible for some minors to obtain work permits and decided to pursue an online application that would be available to the parents of minors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer, tablet, smartphone, or similar device. The application improves accessibility for minors who live in rural or underserved areas and eliminates the difficult logistics involved in working parents having to take off work to make a trip to a work permit office.
The application is live now. A parent can access the site using these instructions. Payment is made directly to the department through the application, using a credit or debit card or by ACH direct withdrawal. Once the permit application process is complete, the Department mails a paper copy of the permit directly to the employer.
In addition, we have reorganized our employment of minors web pages. The information you need is linked at the bottom of this page, including a guide to hazardous and prohibited work, the hours and times of day restrictions for minors, and links to the appropriate statutes and codes.

EXTRACURRICULAR ATTENDANCE POLICY - PRACTICE & COMPETITION
***Students must be in attendance for the entire school day in order to practice or compete in an event. ***
Special circumstances may merit exception with prior approval from the Principal/Dean of Students, or designee. To see if the absence can be approved:
- Step 1 - Parent/Guardian notification to office (Mrs. Dubinski, Mrs. Stadler or Mrs. Dobberstein) at least 24 hours prior to absence
- Step 2 - If absence is approved, Student picks up signed Excused Slip from office
- Step 3 - Student gives signed Excused Slip to coach/advisor to participate the day of the absence
If an absence is deemed unexcused it will result in ineligibility for participation in extracurricular activities until the next full day of attendance.

Anyone in Wisconsin can call or text 988 or use the chat function via www.988lifeline.org to reach out and get the help they need. 988 is ready to provide support for anyone experiencing a suicidal, mental health, and/or substance use crisis. People can also contact 988 if they are concerned about a loved one in crisis.
