Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month is a great opportunity to talk with your student about relationships! Talking with your student about elements of healthy and unhealthy relationships can help them build awareness in their own relationships–both romantic and friendships. Asking your student “what about your relationship makes you feel good?” is a good way to start the conversation. Two great resources to have handy are the Teen Power and Control Wheel and the Equality Wheel for Teens.
This month the BHS chapter of SafeBAE will be doing a scavenger hunt around BHS. They have hidden relationships “red flags” and “green flags” that come from the Power and Control Wheels. Red Flags are elements of a relationship that can indicate it’s unhealthy or possibly unsafe and abusive. Green Flags are elements of a relationship that make someone feel supported and valued. It’s a good reminder that red and green flags apply to all relationships, not just romantic ones! If a student finds a flag during the activity, they can bring it to the Cafeteria for candy and a prize from our local domestic violence resource center is called Through These Doors. SafeBAE will also have lots of resources from TTD for students to take!
Through These Doors has a 24-hour helpline that can be used by people currently in a dangerous relationship, survivors, parents, and concerned loved ones. You do not have to be in crisis to call this number–they offer emotional support, guidance, safety planning, and can help parents brainstorm ways to talk to their teen if they are concerned. Their 24-hour helpline can be reached at 1-800-537-6066. Through These Doors has a designated program for teens called the Young Adult Abuse Prevention Program (YAAPP). Educators from YAAPP come to the health classes every semester to talk with students about healthy relationships. Through These Doors also has a great instagram page for teens! They share about different school-based work, community events for teens, observations about relationships on popular tv shows, and information about safe, equitable, and healthy relationships!
If you are concerned about your student, and would like to speak to someone at school, please reach out to their school counselor: Mary Moore (R10, OCLC, ESOL), Diane Cook (A-F), Scott Bradley (G-N), Christina Ring (O-Z). You can also reach out to Meredith Vogel (general education social worker) or Mary Kunhardt (special education social worker).
Course Registration 2024-25
In March students begin the registration process of selecting course requests for the next school year. Course registration forms will be given to students in grades 9-11 on March 4th during FLEX.
The registration process is extremely important, so students should choose wisely to ensure they will be appropriately challenged academically and prepared for their post high school plans.
We encourage families to be highly involved with their student’s registration. If you or your student has any questions during the registration process (i.e. curriculum, course offerings, graduation requirements, etc.) do not hesitate to contact your student’s counselor, case manager, classroom teacher or FLEX teacher.
The link to the BHS Course of Study Book is below:
Online course selection through PowerSchool will occur later in March (more information to follow).

Guest Speaker Professor Aviva Briefel in Ms. Francis-Taylor's AP Lit Class
To close out the second quarter, Ms. Francis-Taylor invited Professor Aviva Briefel to speak to her AP Literature students about Oscar Wilde. Professor Briefel holds degrees from Brown and Harvard Universities and is Edward Little Professor of the English Language and Literature and Cinema Studies at Bowdoin College. Professor Briefel highlighted how The Picture of Dorian Gray was used as evidence against Oscar Wilde during the infamous Wilde Trials of 1895. Students discussed the novel, read excerpts from the court transcript, and closed out their comparative Gothic study of Stevenson and Wilde with a bang!
What some of the students had to say:
"I really liked how she contextualized Oscar Wilde as a person. I thought I had an idea of who Wilde was, but her insight combined with her sources really characterized him to a degree I couldn’t have predicted. It was valuable to know what Wilde was like as a person, and it put the novel in an interesting light. I would like to reread Dorian Gray again knowing what I learned from the talk."
"I found Professor Briefel’s visit informative and engaging."
"I really appreciated her visit and felt like I gained a deeper understanding of the background of Dorian Gray. It was interesting to see how a professor explains content and I am excited to experience more teachers like her in college."
"I literally adore that woman. She pulled up such interesting material– especially the court case, which I never would have thought to research."
"I really enjoyed Professor Briefel’s visit—what I really enjoyed was the info that she showed us about Oscar Wilde. The different trials were absolutely fascinating, and shed new light on my reading of Dorian Gray. His own character really popped out of the court transcript and was totally different from the novel– I adore the contrast. It definitely got me excited for college, frankly."

Naviance How To
All students have access to this resource that BHS uses for a variety of purposes in the process of investigating career paths and post secondary education options. If students have not yet accessed their Naviance account, they should be doing this in Flex (juniors will be getting passwords next week, in the event your student hasn’t logged in yet).
All students can take a variety of surveys to investigate areas of interest and career pathways and eventually start their list of potential colleges to apply to as seniors.
How to access Naviance:
Naviance can be used to help explore careers and college options/searches. In grade 12 Naviance is used (as a data management tool) to send out all materials from BHS for college applications - including transcripts and letters of recommendation.
1. Go to the BHS Website
2. Select Explore on the top right of the page.
3. Under the Student Column, there is Naviance listed.
4. Type in 04011 for the zip code and select Brunswick High School
5. Usernames are the prefix of emails for BHS (do not include the @portion)
6. Passwords should have been set in Flex or when meeting with school counselors for grades 9 and 10, grade 11 students may have them now or will get them next week.
Where to start?--- Go to Self- Discovery (at top) Complete the surveys!
Reminder - Seniors
Seniors-- you should be indicating in Naviance the responses you are receiving from colleges (acceptances) along with the school you plan on attending (once you know). Check with your counselor if you aren’t sure how to do this.
