5TH GRADE NEWS
This month in 5th grade, weekly D.A.R.E. classes will continue with Officer Wiegand. Students are enjoying learning about his role in the community, and how they can focus on making good choices. Mathematicians are completing Unit 4: Decimal Concepts and Coordinate Grids and will be moving on to Unit 5: Operations with Fractions. Writers are in the drafting stage of the Opinion Writing Unit and will continue to strengthen and improve their writing piece this month.
In reading, students will spend a Seuss-tastic week learning about Dr. Seuss in celebration of his birthday. Learners will then continue the Inferring Unit, which helps students draw conclusions according to evidence in the text. Scientists will wrap up their studies in our Matter Unit and begin learning of the Earth’s systems and how they interact.
It’s hard to believe that we are already approaching the 4th quarter of the 20-21 school year. Give your learner an extra hug today, they are doing an amazing job overcoming all of the challenges they have faced over the past year!
MUSIC NEWS
Music classes will be exploring different genres during the month of March. The first week we will be celebrating Read Across America with sound stories. The students will be receiving their music sound bag kits during class time. These bags are to stay at school so we have sound sources that we can create music with during class. We will be reviewing musical elements from quarters one and two. Each week there is a worksheet to complete and turn in by the next music class. The worksheets are a review and practice of the music ideas we learn about in class.
Rhythm Raptor Challenge Award
The rhythm raptor challenge has started for round 2 for the fourth and fifth grade classes. The classes with the most points wins the rights of keeping Rex the Dinosaur and his cousins in their classroom until the next challenge.
Remember if you are remote learning check your google classroom. Each week there will be lessons and assignments posted on google classroom under the music topic for your class. Please complete the lessons each week. Your music grade will include the remote learning assignments.
Fifth grade band and chorus have been postponed at this time. We will try to get the groups started during this school year when we have more in person learning time. Information will be sent home as soon as we know about the start of these groups.
A Word FROM OUR READING TEACHER, MRS. JONES
March winds and April showers, bring May flowers. The March winds are making themselves known. Hopefully that means Spring is coming in like a lion and will move out like a lamb!!!! The weather sure feels like it. This month we will celebrate Read Across America. This is such an amazing way to promote reading with your child.
To promote reading, students should read interesting and non-troublesome material when reading for fun. Some ways to promote this is to:
Allow them to select anything that interests them, within reason. There are several good magazines that are of interest to children: Highlights, Ranger Rick, Zoo Books, Sports Illustrated for Kids, National Geographic Kids
It is also important that the material selected is at their reading ability level so that they can succeed in comprehending what they are reading and enjoy the experience of reading.
Fifteen to twenty minutes of leisure reading per evening is suggested. This can be done as part of the homework regimen or as a reward before bedtime. It isn’t necessary for your child to always read aloud to you. If you let them read silently, you might ask them to retell what they have read in their own words to check for understanding. Many parents avoid reading aloud to their own children; however, children of all ages enjoy being read to. When reading to your child, keep in mind that everybody makes mistakes. Involve your child in the story, try changing your voice to show the character’s feelings, and above all, enjoy the time you’re spending with your child.
