Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
I can’t believe that it is already November, but the chill in the air and autumn leaves are definitely here. Fall Sports are wrapping up. Volleyball made it to the first round of the state playoffs, and Men’s Cross Country will be competing in the state meet this Saturday in Eugene. Great job Cougar Athletes! The fall play, The Servant of Two Masters, debuts tonight for a two week run. General Admission is $10. It is $8 for students, and CHS students are free with their ASB card. We wish our thespians the best of luck! This past week we celebrated Halloween, and MEChA and Marketing partnered together for some fun Day of the Dead activities. Thanks to our clubs for providing these experiences for our students!
Our Future Farmers of America (FFA) students recently competed at nationals with some stellar results in “Power, Structural and Technical Agriscience projects.” In Division 3, sophomore Joshua Artino earned 9th place, and in Division 5, recent grad Brooke Jonas earned 10th place. Jacob Palacios was named a National FFA Band Member for the second time, and our whole FFA chapter earned a 2 star award. Awesome job FFA!
Next, Thursday, November 10, we will be participating in a required lockdown drill. This short drill is part of our regularly scheduled drills. We will make it clear that it is just a drill, but we know that it can be triggering for some students. Please speak with your student in advance. We also have counselors available for students who would like to talk.
This morning I hosted my first “Coffee with Cari” opportunity. It was lovely to hear from parents and community members and share about some of the great things happening here at CHS. A big thanks to the parents who came! We plan to offer more opportunities in the future at different times of day to give more folks time to engage with us.
Finally, senior parents please scroll down in this newsletter for important upcoming events regarding senior and graduation information.
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Winter Sports Season starts November 14th. Registration will open October 27th. Students must be fully cleared through the registermyathlete.com site in order to attend any practice or tryouts.
Please note: Buses have been running late at times. The best way to get real time information is through the the Traversa Ride 360 app – available online and for free in the App Store and Google. Bus routes are also available on the CSD website.
CHS is a closed campus! Students may walk off campus during lunch, but for students’ safety, we do not allow students to drive their cars during the school day. Please remind your students of this important safety rule.
Pedestrian Safety Tips
Before the bell rings to start the day and after the bell rings to signal its end, our schools are active with people, cars, and buses! We are thankful for our community police and fire partners and with their assistance, we’ve compiled this list of pedestrian safety reminders to help everyone stay safe during the arrival and dismissal process. Please take a look and share them with your students.
Make sure you never play, push, or shove others when you walk around traffic.
Use the sidewalk whenever possible, and if there isn’t a sidewalk, walk on the edge of the street facing traffic.
Use marked crosswalks when they’re available. Otherwise, cross carefully at an intersection.
Before crossing, always look left-right-left for vehicles or bikes, and don’t assume they can see you.
Everyone should watch the road, not their phones.
Athletics and Activities
Fall Sports Awards will start at 6:00 pm in the FAC on 11/9 and move to designated areas for each sport.
Schedules:
We have all of our athletics schedule all in one place on our master athletic schedule. This includes game times, locations, and bus departure times. It is updated real-time by your athletic department. Go to this link to see the current schedule, which is subject to change with little notice.
Fall Play--The Servant of Two Masters:
The play opens with a troupe of actors onstage bemoaning the bad economic times and the effect they’re having on the troupe's theatre. The company, preparing to perform Goldoni's The Servant of Two Masters, is reduced to borrowing and recycling props and costumes from other plays. Based on the classical Italian comedy style of commedia dell'arte, the play’s plot revolves around the absurdly complicated circumstances keeping two pairs of lovers apart, and the role of the servant Truffaldino in bringing everything to a happy conclusion as he attempts to sate his hunger for both food and meaning in life. Will Truffaldino and the rest of the theatre troupe be able to pull off the under-rehearsed show AND save the theatre? Find out at CHS's The Servant of Two Masters!

Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
