February Updates
February will be full of exciting field trips for our ANCCS students! In the coming weeks, our youngest students will travel to the Matanuska Glacier with our 6th grade role models, our 7th and 8th graders will go cross-country skiing, and we'll have students learning about Civil Rights activists at Alaska Junior Theatre's production of Harriett Tubman!
We also look forward to connecting with every family during parent-teacher conferences! Our conference day will be Thursday, February 22, from 8:30 am - 7:00 pm for K-8 students. Please note that ANCCS does not follow the same schedule as other ASD schools. Our K-8 students have a full day of school on Wednesday, February 21, followed by two days without school on Thursday and Friday, February 22 and 23. Our preschool students have no school the entire week of February 19 - 23 (same as other ASD preschools). If you will not be able to attend your child's conference on February 22, please reach out to their classroom teacher to schedule and alternate date for a meeting or phone call. We will be sharing more information on scheduling conferences very soon!
Spring Lottery for 2024-2025
ASD Lottery opens February 1! Please share with any friends or neighbors who may be interested in ANCCS for their child.
Families interested in joining ANCCS (including current ANCCS Pre-K students planning to attend ANCCS for Kindergarten and beyond) need to apply through the ASD lottery. Current ANCCS K-8 students do not need to reapply. The District utilizes a randomized lottery system to provide equal opportunity for all students who would like to participate in alternative schools or programs other than their child's neighborhood school.
Please visit the ASD Lottery Website for more information about the lottery or call the office at (907) 742-1370.

NAEP Testing
Our 4th & 8th graders will be participating in NAEP testing on Monday, February 5. This assessment does not impact individual student's grades, records, or achievement. However, it is an important test for providing national feedback on ANCCS as a school. We want our ANCCS students to try their best in order to represent themselves and our school well. Please take a few moments to view the above video with your 4th or 8th grade student.
Access Testing
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Each year, students in English Learner programs take the ACCESS for ELLs language proficiency test. The test measures academic English language proficiency for students learning English in our school and throughout our state. The testing window is from February 5-10.
Teachers in our school use this information to help them make decisions about instruction for your child. Teachers also use these test scores to monitor the progress your child makes toward English proficiency.
Please contact me if you have questions about the ACCESS for ELLs test
Sincerely,
Pamela Dupras
ELL Resource Teacher
Alaska Native Cultural Charter School
ANCCS recognized for it's achievement!
Earlier this week, Governor Mike Dunleavy highlighted Alaska Native Cultural Charter School in his 2024 State of the State speech. Principal Sweetsir, one of the founders of ANCCS, was invited to attend the State of the State in Juneau as one of six honorees from across the state.

Reflect: Ask your student what they've learned in school about ikayuucaraq, ways of working together.
Connect: Has there ever been a time you found it hard to work with someone else? When have you needed help and how did it feel to receive it? Tell your student a story about a time when you learned about ikayuucaraq.
Explore: Brainstorm some ways that you and your student can work together to help a neighbor, friend, or your community.
Winter Gear
While the days are getting longer, the weather remains quite cold! Please take some time to review your student's winter gear and make sure they have winter boots, a warm coat, snow pants, gloves/mittens, and a hat with them at school every day. If something is missing, please stop by to check out our Lost & Found--it currently is overfilled with unclaimed winter gear and other items. If your family is in need of appropriate winter gear, you also may reach out to Nurse Frost at (907) 742-1370. We gave away lots of gear at our January family night, but have many items remaining!
Attendance Reminder
ASD Goal: Every student will attend school at least 90 percent of the time.
ANCCS Goal: Less than 8 is Great!
The graph below shows our 90% attendance rate throughout the school year. In the month of January, 60.45% of ANCCS students achieved 90% attendance. While this rate is up from December, we still have plenty of room to grow!
Quyana to our families for your dedication in bringing your student to school each and every day! Every day that you bring your student to school or arrange a ride for them, you are investing in their future.

5th & 6th Grade: Human Growth & Development
During the 2nd semester, students in 5th & 6th grade will study human growth and development and diseases as part of ASD's Elementary Health curriculum, The Great Body Shop.
Parents of 5th & 6th grade students are invited preview the curriculum materials with Ms. Ward (PE & Health) and Ms. Osborne (Assistant Principal) on Tuesday, February 13, from 8:00 - 8:30 am. More information will be sent home with 5th & 6th grade students.
Help us keep our roads safe!
We have heard several recent concerns regarding traffic in and around our campus, but we know that if we work together, we can all help to keep our roads and community safe.
A few traffic reminders:
* Please observe all speed limits when driving on our campus and in the surrounding neighborhood. We have had community complaints about speeding on Nadine road and other neighborhood streets.
* Do not exit via the 84th Street entrance. During arrival and dismissal, we need traffic to flow one way with cars entering on 84th and looping around the building. Parents picking up preschool students should exit our campus via the two exits directly onto Lake Otis Pkwy.
* When picking up students at the front door, please park in the lot and walk in. Pick up for after-school activities including 21st Century and sports is from the front door and requires an adult to come in to sign the student out. Please park in a parking space in the lot and do not park in the roadway in front of the door as this does not leave adequate room for other vehicles to get by.
* Please don't turn left on our crossing guard. The exit from our drop-off and pick-up line is a right turn only as marked by the traffic signs. This is to prevent gridlock at the Lake Otis streetlight and our campus entrance. We also staff the exit with a friendly crossing guard to assist our walking students--it's usually Mr. Bosco, but sometimes Ms. Ward, Ms. Osborne, or another one of your student's teachers fills in. When you turn left while our crossing guard is signaling right turn only, it not only puts them and our students at risk, but it also models for your student that listening to directions is not important. Please help us keep our staff and students safe and model working together.
*If you know you'll need to pick your student up early, please do so before 3:00 pm. The end of the day is a very busy time for our front office and once our dismissal process begins, it takes all of our staff to keep things running smoothly. When parents and guardians come to the office after 3:00 pm to pick up their students, it often ends up taking them even longer to retrieve their student and exit our parking lot than it would to go through the pick-up line because it disrupts our normal end of day flow. We kindly ask that all early pick ups be completed before 3:00 pm whenever possible.
