From the Principal
Dear Roadrunner Families:
We are excited to welcome our students back to school! We encourage our families to be involved in our back to school events.
Please remember:
Please make sure your child's backpack, lunch box, water bottle, and outerwear are labeled with first and last name. This helps tremendously when your child's items go to the Lost and Found. Each month, we will clean out the Lost and Found. Items that are not labeled and not claimed after 30 days will be donated to the Leander ISD Clothes Closet.
Please be kind to our staff enforcing our arrival and dismissal procedures. Please continue to exercise extreme caution driving around our school. Cell phone use is prohibited in a school zone. Ensure students who are being dropped off are exiting the right passenger side of your vehicle. Ensure your vehicle is in park when your child is exiting. Look both ways before proceeding. Always yield to walkers and bikers on the road. Let's keep our children safe.
Remember, doors open at 7:10am. Student hours are 7:30am-2:45pm, and we dismiss now at our regular time starting at 2:45pm. Please, no early pickups after 2:15pm. It is very difficult to collect students at the end of the school day and ensure all of our students dismiss safely. We need your help, as early pick-ups cause frequent calling to classrooms and interrupting instruction. Please try your best to pick your students up at the regular dismissal time.
We are here for you! If you have any questions, please call our office at (512)570-7700.
We can’t wait to celebrate #ADecadeOfExcellence. Thank YOU for helping us #LeadReed!

Officer Leonard A. Reed Elementary School Named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by FranklinCovey Education
Leadership and Life Skills at Reed ElementarySchool Inspire Young Students to Become
21st Century Leaders with the Leader in Me Process
CEDAR PARK, TEXAS – JANUARY 13, 2020 – Reed Elementary School announced today the school has been certified and named as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School by FranklinCovey Education. This recognition is evidence that the school has produced outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing the Leader in Me process with fidelity and excellence. It is also because of the extraordinary impact the school is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community.
Paige Collier, principal of Reed Elementary said, “We are honored to have been certified and named a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. We have seen amazing results from implementing the Leader in Me process at our school, such as increased attendance rates, double-digit gains in academic test scores, and decreased discipline issues. This process not only has had a significant impact on our students, but also in our community. And we expect to see greater results over time.”
The Lighthouse Certification is a highly-regarded standard set by FranklinCovey Education that is attainable by every Leader in Me school. As it is a significant benchmark, applying for this certification typically occurs three to five years after a school begins the Leader in Me process.
Sean Covey, President, FranklinCovey Education, said, “We are thrilled to recognize Reed Elementary School as a Leader in Me Lighthouse School. Schools who achieve this Lighthouse Certification are great examples of a strong leadership model and process, and of what it means to be a Leader in Me school. This school has experienced transformational results by implementing the principles and practices related to Leader in Me. And, we are so pleased and honored to celebrate the success they are experiencing.”
Since its official launch nearly a decade ago, nearly 4,000 public, private, and charter schools across 50 countries have adopted the Leader in Me process, while more than 300 schools have achieved the prestigious Lighthouse certification. It is earned by schools that demonstrate the following:
· The principal, school administration and staff engage in ongoing learning and develop as leaders, while championing leadership for the school.
· Leadership principles are effectively taught to all students through direct lessons, integrated approaches, and staff modeling. Students are able to think critically about and apply leadership principles.
· Families and the school partner together in learning about the 7 Habits and leadership principles through effective communication and mutual respect.
· The school community is able to see leadership in the physical environment, hear leadership through the common language of the 7 Habits, and feel leadership through a culture of caring, relationships, and affirmation.
· Leadership is shared with students through a variety of leadership roles and student voice leads to innovations within the school.
· Schoolwide, classroom, family and community leadership events provide authentic environments to celebrate leadership, build culture, and allow students to practice leadership skills.
· The school utilizes the 4DX® process to identify and track progress toward Wildly Important Goals (WIGs) for the school, classroom, and staff.
· Students lead their own learning with the skills to assess their needs, set appropriate goals, and carry out action plans. They track progress toward goals in Leadership Notebooks and share these notebooks with adults in student-led conferences.
· Teacher planning and reflection, trusting relationships, and student-led learning combine to create environments for highly engaged learning.
Reed Elementary School will maintain its Lighthouse Certification the next two years and will continue to foster its growth and proficiency in exemplifying a leadership culture and principles. At the end of the two years, Reed will be able to recertify its Lighthouse Certification through a virtual self-assessment, describing and celebrating its growth and accomplishments since its original Lighthouse designation.
Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model and process—developed in partnership with educators—that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. Leader in Me helps students learn how to become self-reliant, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, do their homework, prioritize their time, manage their emotions, be considerate of others, express their viewpoint persuasively, resolve conflicts, find creative solutions, value differences, and live a balanced life.
Leader in Me utilizes and integrates several leadership, social-emotional learning, quality, and educational models and processes from past and current thought leaders including The 4 Imperatives of Great Leaders and The 4 Disciplines of Execution. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is also a key component of the overall Leader in Me process and is a synthesis of universal, timeless principles of personal, interpersonal, and organizational effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal.
Leader in Me is having a significant, measurable impact on schools all over the world and in the lives of millions of students, parents, teachers, and administrators, as is evidenced by the findings resulting from initial evaluation studies conducted by third-party research organizations and leading academic institutions. Leader in Me- The 7 Habits
Each week we will recognize leaders in our school that demonstrate and model the habits. Here is a link to The Leader in Me parent guide: http://www.theleaderinme.org/parents/
Habit 1 – Be proactive – I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
Habit 2 – Begin with the end in mind – I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom and contribute to my school’s mission and vision. I look for ways to be a good citizen.
Habit 3 – Put first things first – I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say no to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.
Habit 4 – Think win-win – I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. When conflicts arise, I look for a win-win solution.
Habit 5 - Seek first to understand, then to be understood – I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoint (paradigm). I listen to others without interrupting. I listen with my ears, my eyes, and my heart. I am confident in voicing my ideas.
Habit 6 – Synergize – I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas because I know that by teaming with others, we can create better solutions than what any one of us could alone. I look for Third Alternatives.
Habit 7 – Sharpen the saw – I eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep (body). I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school (brain). I spend time with family and friends (heart). I take time to find meaningful ways to help people (soul). I balance all four parts of myself.

The Roadrunner Pledge
We are teaching all of our students the school rules. Students are discussing and presenting what each expected behavior looks like and sounds like in the classroom, cafeteria, playground, neighborhood, hallway, and school bus.
In addition, we say the Roadrunner pledge on the announcements daily.
I am a Reed Roadrunner.
I will be safe and kind.
I will be respectful.
I will be responsible.
I will lead by example.

Second Step- Social Skills
Social Skills Learning is recognized as a key ingredient for school and life
success. To meet the social skills needs of our students and to teach
specific social skills, Leander ISD uses the Second Step
curriculum.
The overall goal of the Second Step social skills program is to increase our
students’ instructional time by helping students stay on task. Second Step
will also increase their capacity to learn, while decreasing behaviors
impacting learning.
Each Second Step grade level curriculum is comprised of four units.
1. Skills for Learning
2. Empathy
3. Emotional Management
4. Problem Solving
We are excited about implementing this new curriculum in Leander ISD.
SEGUNDO PASO— HABILIDADES SOCIALES
