PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Believe it or not we have reached the true halfway point in the school year. Joan MacQueen is at the mid way point of trimester 2. Teachers are submitting the trimester 2 progress report grades, and they should be ready for viewing..
Our return to school this week was wonderful. It is always nice to see familiar faces return after a good long break. Some of the students appear noticeably taller (is that possible in only 2 and a half weeks?)!
Our 8th graders got to experience their Finance Park field trip this past week, and feedback on the experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
Remember that there is no school tomorrow in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day. Enjoy your day off and enjoy this latest edition of the Dust Devil Weekly.
Sighted on campus this week...
- Students returning to campus to the first Leadership morning of 2024! We reviewed the Dust Devil Way and then had a school wide spirit competition...Coin Toss Challenge!
- Our 8th graders heading off campus for a trip to Finance Park! They had a blast learning about finances and their futures.
Around Alpine Union...
In today’s episode of 'Around Alpine Union,' we want to shine a spotlight on our amazing Native American students! Join us in celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures within our community. By sharing these insights, we hope to foster a deeper sense of unity and understanding among all students, staff, and community members. Please join us on Sunday, February 4th for the 7th Annual American Indian Cultural Education Gathering at JMMS from 11 am - 3 pm. #UnityInDiversity #AlpineUnion #Inclusivity
AEF STEAM FAIR
We are excited to announce the first-ever Alpine Education Foundation STEAM Fair to be held on March 9 at Joan MacQueen Middle School. The Fair is open to all students, TK-8 grade. Do you have a student interested in showcasing an invention or exploring a scientific topic? Do you have a student who makes art or has an innovative product to sell? The Alpine Education Foundation is seeking students to participate in the Steam Fair. Students can participate by submitting a science fair project to present to a panel of judges or hosting a vendor booth to showcase or sell their creations. The event will also feature games, activities, music, and more! Please visit AEF4kids.org to learn more and sign up. STEAM Fair.
Focus on: Attendance
School attendance matters. We all know that. We also know there are a lot of reasons that students miss school. But did you know that an estimated 5 million to 7.5 million U.S. students miss nearly a month of school each year. Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
Obviously when a student misses school, they miss out on important opportunities for learning. Let’s say a child misses school on Monday. They will be one day behind their peers who were in school. When the child returns to school on Tuesday they then have to “catch up” to their peers, but the problem is that their peers are continuing to build on what the absent student is just learning. The academic gap will continue to grow, and will only be exacerbated by future absences.
If a child feels legitimately ill, they should stay home to protect themselves and their peers. But we work together as a school community to ensure that our students are in class, learning, by limiting additional absences, we will foster academically successful young people.

AUSD LCAP GOALS
