A Note from Mrs. Shirley
Dear OHE Family,
As we enter the month of February, I am so proud of how much your children are learning!! The weeks after Christmas Break are some of the most productive in the whole year and even with bad weather causing some bumps in January, our OHE students are learning many new concepts that prepare them for the next grade.
Parent/Teacher conferences will happen on February 20-22. These conferences are very important for us to be able to update you on how your child is doing academically and socially. If you have not heard from your teacher about scheduling a P/T Conference, please contact your child’s teacher to secure a time for your conference. Our goal is to have conferences with 100% of our students.
As a result of the snow days, we will have school on February 19. It will be a regular Smart Start
Monday.
March begins our testing season. This time is very important for our students because it helps us know if we are giving your students the education they need to compete with students across our state and nation. Our ELL students will take an assessment called the ELPA to measure English language growth and our 3rd and 4th grade students will take a new state assessment called the ATLAS. Be on the look-out for more information on these assessments in the next month.
Our school was recently recognized for completing Level 1 toward becoming a High Reliability School. This is a recognition program that ensures we are working toward high standards and Level 1 focused on safety and communication. We are going to be beginning work soon on Level 2 which focuses on instruction.
In our Capturing Kids’ Hearts program, we are working to become a National Showcase
School. We will complete our final evaluation at the end of February and hope to have an exciting
announcement by April. I’m so proud of staff and students who are reaching for high standards in
everything we do!!
Valentine’s Day is coming very soon. We will have class parties during this holiday and would love to
have you come visit our school. The OHE PTO is also selling treats if you would like to give your child a special Valentine treat at school.

A Note from Mrs. Ditto
Hello OHE Families!
I've been thinking a lot lately about appreciation. The definition of appreciation is recognizing and enjoying the good qualities of someone or something. Here are some of the things I appreciate at OHE: the people within these walls, the preparation that teachers put in to their lessons, the positive words spoken to each other, the way we work together. I also appreciate YOU! I appreciate that you trust us with your children. I appreciate your openness and willingness to communicate with us. I appreciate the way you are involved in your students' learning. I appreciate that you join us in the fun stuff. You don't hear it enough, but we do appreciate you! Thank you for all you do!
Shine Bright,
Mrs. Lynette Ditto
Parent and Community Suggestions
We strive to make Oakland Heights the best school it can be. If you have suggestions to help in this effort, please submit those suggestions at the link below.
Attendance Matters
2nd quarter attendance rate for 2022 was 91.9%. Earlier this year, I challenged our students and parents to increase our 2nd quarter attendance for this year. Well--you did it! The 2nd quarter attendance rate for 2023-24 was 99.75%! That is incredible!
My 3rd quarter challenge is to maintain that attendance rate for this nine weeks and to reduce the amount of morning tardies. We begin morning announcements at 7:55 (8:55 on Mondays). Classes begin immediately after the announcements, which is usually 8:00. If students come in late, they miss important information and feel rushed throughout their day. Being at school on time sets our students up for success!
Important Reminders
If your student receives a food backpack, please return the empty backpack to school on Mondays.
Morning drop off time is 7:30 am. There is no adult supervision before 7:30 am.
Please put your student’s first and last name inside their jackets/hoodies/coats so that they may be returned to them if misplaced.

Shine Assembly Information
Each month there is a Shine Assembly at OHE. During this assembly, we are recognizing and celebrating students for demonstrating the characteristics on the Profile of an OHE Student. These characteristics are the same as the characteristics on the Profile of a RSD Graduate, but they have adapted for elementary students. Teachers spend time talking about the characteristics and the importance of developing these qualities both for now and for the future. Teachers nominate students who demonstrate one of the qualities in an exemplary way. Students receive stars to put on a carabiner on their backpacks. We try to have a special guest present the stars each month.
