Hello Stonybrook Middle School Families!

Welcome to the month of May as we "race" to the finish line of this school year. I hope you enjoy this version of the Red Storm Forecast as it has many celebrations and recognition of both students and staff!

Students and staff have completed our ILEARN testing and will complete the NWEA Math and Reading End of Year assessments the week of May 13th. We look forward to seeing what continued growth we have made on the NWEA as we wrap up another school year.

With just a few weeks of school remaining, we still have a number of activities and events. We hope to see you at these whether it be at our performing arts concerts, athletic events, or awards program.

7th grade students who qualify for Outstanding Citizenship may enjoy a field trip to Sky Zone on May 29th. Students are to maintain a B- or higher in Citizenship and a 96% or better attendance rate (late arrivals included) from April 1st until the date of the trip. Any student have a question about his/her ability to qualify may look in Tyler for their data and/or contact Ms. True.

Field Trip Details: SkyZone South (in Greenwood) for $28.50/student (includes 2 hours of jump time, unlimited soda, 2 slices of pizza, jump socks, and transportation). Approximate time of trip is from 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM.

Similarly, 8th grade students will be traveling to King's Island on May 29th. The deadline for their trip registration has passed. Any remaining seats are on a first come first serve basis until Monday, May 13th. Students must meet the same criteria as listed above for 7th grade.

May 31st - Stonybrook Cookout During Lunches and Class of 2023 Dance (Click the link for details). We are also planning a Field Day for each grade level. The field day will be either on May 30th or May 31st, depending on weather forecast. Students should see their RADAR teacher for additional details.

June 3rd - Awards Program:

Please be checking your home or places your child visits for any SMS library books that need to be returned. Remind your child the books will have at least one (1) barcode strip with Stonybrook Middle School on it and an inked stamp on the front and back cover "Stonybrook Media Center" with the street address.

Join us for our two remaining performances! Students have worked hard throughout the year to increase their playing abilities and welcome all to come enjoy these opportunities!

Medication Pickup Deadline----June 3rd 1:30 p.m.

Parents or a designated adult must pick up any leftover medication that you child has here in the Clinic by this date. Any medication not picked up by the deadline will be destroyed. NO medication will be sent home with students or carried over to the next school year. If you have any questions, please call the Clinic at 317-532-8800.

Warren Cleanup Day!

A dozen SMS students gave of their time on a Saturday morning to help cleanup our community. They spent three hours picking up trash along 30th street and around Grassy Creek park!

Indy Mini-Marathon!

Twenty students from our Student Council, National Junior Honor Society, and Red Storm Brigade braved an early morning wakeup and lots of rain as they supported the Indy Mini-Marathon participants by handing out items at the completion of the race! Did you know that MSD of Warren's Transportation Department is on Twitter? Their Twitter handle is @TransportWarren and they post information related to bus routes that may be running behind or have a sub driver. This assists with keeping informed on last minute changes that may occur.

21st Century Scholarship (paper) Applications are due by May 27, 2019 to Mrs. Nicholson.

We are excited to announce that Warren Township is launching a new app and a new website. Using a mobile device, you can download the app from Google Play or the App Store (search MSD of Warren Township).

Tutoring has started at the Ransburg YMCA that will extend out into summer break! We offer 90 minute tutoring sessions twice weekly for a monthly fee of $60 (financial assistance and scholarships available). Depending on the time parents choose to have the session, breakfast or lunch will be provided at Ransburg. We have IU and IUPUI graduate students in addition to myself leading the program majoring from Biology to Biochemistry. We will also have programming for literacy fun from the Indianapolis Public Library. Tutoring will be available for students K-12! If parents would like to enroll in our current tutoring program, we have 2- 60 minute sessions weekly for a monthly fee of $40. This option is available to students from 5pm-8pm Monday-Friday!

As part of our CORE expectations, students have been taught and reminded of the daily dismissal process. Part of this process includes students boarding the buses as they pass by them the first time and to make orderly progress to their bus. This allows for us to ensure our buses are boarded safely and in a timely manner. Please reinforce these expectations with your child.

Students who opt to not meet these expectations may be requested to be picked up by their parent/guardian which will allow us an opportunity to collaborate with the parent/guardian and the student to ensure expectations are met moving forward. Your support in these efforts is both anticipated and appreciated.

Check out our May Athletic's Newsletter which our Athletics Director, Mr. Cummings uses to keep you informed of all things athletics happening at Stonybrook. Athletics is a great way for students to get involved and add to their enjoyment of their overall educational experiences.

Stonybrook's Student Council collected over 100 vases for the Indianapolis Random Acts of Flowers. The vases will be filled with flowers and sent to nursing homes and hospitals and given to those who need a morale boost.

Congratulations to the following scholars! They are recognized for more than just honor roll, they have demonstrated excellence in the following areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character and citizenship.

8th Grade: Calayiah Cartlidge, Sophie Eastman, Sidney Graham, Korrea Jackson, Destiny Loston, Christie Luma, Kaytlyn Nickels, Nyia Norwood, Maggie Zheng.

7th Grade: Xiomara Brents, Terajana Chiles, Cassandra McKay, Raven Odom, Kailyn Roberson, Daniel Stewart, Jayonna Zinerman.

Great attendance is a key indicator for student academic performance. Students who maintain an attendance rate of 96% or better meet the criteria for being considered a Model Attendee. Each month we have a friendly competition between staff and students as to who has the best attendance. Students who meet this criteria are able to have their picture taken, as you see here, and qualify for the monthly incentive we offer. Congratulations to all students who continue to work at having great attendance!

Thanks to the many outstanding cast and support members who put on a fantastic production of Seussical the Musical! Thanks to our Director, Mr. Brian Lane, and all the staff who supported this wonderful experience as well!

Congratulations to Mrs. Bianca Rivers (Teacher of the Year) and Ms. Caitlin Bowman (Support Employee of the Year)! These two staff members were nominated to represent SMS as our employees of the year. Mrs. Rivers has served students, staff, and families as the Dean this year. Ms. Bowman has served students and staff as our building Guest Teacher. We appreciate all they do for students!
