Little Dribblers
The month of May started with the Lasara Little Dribblers competing against Raymondville's L.C. Smith and Pitman Elementary Schools. The 4th and 5th-grade students practiced during the After School Program with Coach Jessica Garza. They had both Coach Garza and Miss Corina Salinas as their coaches during their games. They started the first game against L. C. Smith. They had control of most of the game beating L. C. Smith. After that game, they rested about 5 minutes and then started the next game against Pitman Elementary. While they did their best, Pitman Elementary won that game. All of the teams worked hard and had a lot of fun. The stands were packed with parents, family members, friends, faculty, and staff from all the schools. It was a lot of fun for everyone. Way to Go Little Dribblers!
UIL State Competition
Nine students went to the UIL State Competition. They left for Austin Texas on May 4th. They competed on May 5th and 6th. There were 6 seniors, 1 sophomore, and 2 freshmen. It was a great experience for all the students. In Current Issues, Matthew Tamez, a freshman, won 3rd place at the state level. Elliana Chapa, a senior won 3rd place in Literary Criticism, Victoria Velazquez, a senior, came in 5th, Jazmine Flores, a senior, came in 7th, and Selissa Gonzales, a senior, came in 12th. The Literary Criticism team won 2nd place. Victoria Velazquez placed 5th in News Writing as well. I want to extend big congratulations to both the students and the coaches for a great UIL season. You did an awesome job!
Track and Field
The state track meet was held on May 14th. Selissa Gonzales, a senior, and Xiomara Rodriguez, a sophomore, competed at the state level in Track and Field. Selissa Gonzales got 3rd place, the Bronze Medal, in the 800m run and 5th place in the 400m dash. Xiomara brought home the Gold in the 1A girls' discus. Way to go Lady Lions.
The Little Mermaid Play
The 4th and 5th-grade students performed the play, The Little Mermaid under the direction of Mrs. Jacqueline Maldonado. The students did a great job! So expressive taking their roles seriously. I saw future high school one-act play competitors in this group. Many parents, students, and staff showed up to see these young performers. The 4th and 5th-grade teachers and Mrs. Maldonado did a wonderful job putting this play together. Way to go Little Lions
AR Party
Every year, we set up an Accelerated Reader goal for our students. This year, 1st thru 3rd grade had to reach a particular amount of AR points per grade level with an average of 70 to participate. 4th & 5th-grade students needed to read a minimum of 500,000 words with a 70 average. We decide to give the AR qualifiers a party that began at 8:30 am until the end of the day. I am glad to say that we had 45 students earn this reward. There were water slides, movies, and snacks. Although we did have some setbacks due to the weather, we were able to persevere. Instead of having the waterslides in the morning, we held the movie in the morning, ate lunch in the library, and had the waterslides and snacks in the afternoon. It was a lot of fun!
Banquets!
At this time of year, there are banquets to celebrate the students and what they have accomplished. There is the Sports Banquet where student-athletes from both middle school and high school are recognized for their efforts in a variety of sports. The Academic Banquet celebrates the elementary, middle, and high school students' achievements in the classroom and in UIL. The FFA Banquet celebrates the FFA students' hard work throughout the year. Parents, students, and staff get together at the Sports Complex to enjoy a nice dinner and to support and celebrate our students' successes. The students work hard all year. They deserve to be celebrated. These banquets are by invitation only, so the students know that they have to work hard to get invited.
