Unit 1: Week 4
Learning Goals:
- I can read and understand a nonfiction text.
- I can use text evidence to respond to a nonfiction text.
- I know about different things friends do together.
Key Concepts:
- Our class will be focusing on what friends do when they play together. We will talk about how people interact and how we can resolve conflicts in a way that is fair.
- Help your child use the words to tell a story about playing with friends.
- Help your child spell each word as you say it and identify the one letter that is in every in the word. This week’s phonics skill is short o, as in hop, log, and top.
Comprehension: Topic and Relevant Details (click on the link to access the reading)
- Help your child read a text and identify the topic and relevant details of the text.
Unit 1: Week 5
- I can read and understand a nonfiction text.
- I can respond to a nonfiction text by extending the text.
- I know about different ways our bodies can move.
- I know about different ways out bodies can move.
Key Concepts:
- Our class will be focusing on the different ways we can move our bodies, such as running, kicking, waving, and hopping.
- Have your child show and tell the meaning of the words, and then write a sentence using each word.
Spelling/Phonics: beginning consonant blends
- Help your child identify the two beginning sounds that blend together in each spelling word. This week’s phonics skill is beginning r- and s-blends, as in the words stop, grin, and drip. Help your child think of other words that begin with the same sounds.
- Help your child read a text and identify the topic and relevant details about the text.
Unit 1: Week 6 - Review
This week our class will be focusing again on the important skills covered during the last five weeks. Here are some activities you can do with your child.
Think of an activity or an event you have shared together.
Write a few simple sentences together about the activity or event. Have your child add some drawings to help describe the activity.
Ask your child to present the description to family members.
Before your child presents the description, discuss this checklist.
√ Look over your sentences. Do they clearly tell what happened?
√ Speak clearly and slowly.
√ Remember to smile.
Showing interest in your child’s reading, writing, and speaking will help his or her progress during the year.
