INSPIRE-EDUCATE-EMPOWER

October 13, 2023 Newsletter
Dear ALMS Parents and Families,
Happy Friday the 13th! We hope you have had a wonderful week! We are working hard over here at ALMS! This week we saw students and teachers working with Canva, creating influential "Instagram" posts as captains of industry! We also had a very informative presentation for our parents from our SEL leaders! Our Media Club has also put together another "Teacher Feature", highlighting Ms. Stella, one of our Family and Consumer Science Teachers!
Looking ahead we have Red Ribbon Week, new Cap and Gown information, World Unity Day, Picture Makeup Day, a Community Blood Drive, and more! This coming Wednesday, October 18th, we ask that everyone wears orange to show kindness, acceptance, and inclusion as part of World Unity Day. See the flyers and images below for all previously mentioned events!
This is a jam packed newsletter with lots of clickable information. You can also access any previous newsletter from this year in the "In case you missed it..." section!
Warmest regards,
Camille Edwards-Thomas

8th Grade Updates - Cap and Gown Measurements
8th Graders have a big year ahead of them. We would like to start off the year with getting as much pertinent information out to the students and families as quickly as possible. Please see below for a Google Form which is being emailed out to all 8th grade students so you know what to expect, and so you can discuss it with your child! Thank you and check back regularly on our website to see more information as the year progresses!
Below are screenshots of a form students and families are expected to fill out no later than Friday, October 20th. All 8th graders must complete this form to receive a cap and gown for the 8th Grade Moving Up Ceremony. Please click to enlarge the images. Thank you!
Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Bryant and Mr. Silviotti
Ms. Bryant's 8th Grade Social Studies classes are studying the early 20th Century Captains of Industry such as John D. Rockefeller, Cornelius Vanderbilt, JP Morgan, and Andrew Carnegie. Students are working together to create Instagram posts as these early 20th Century industrial leaders. Their tasks include researching, note taking, developing, and creating trendy posts describing the lives of these men. Mr. Silviotti has come in to show the students how to leverage Canva to help these ideas come to life!
Wear Orange This Wednesday!
Dear Parent/Caregiver,
Did you know that 13 is the average age when kids try alcohol and drugs for the first time? Armed with the correct information and concrete strategies, we can support our kids in making good choices.
Each year, National Red Ribbon Week is celebrated from October 23 - 31, with the theme for this year is βBe Kind to your Mind, Live Drug-Freeβ. Schools across the country use this time to engage kids in dialogues about the importance of making positive life choices and avoiding the temptation to use drugs and alcohol.
Research shows that children of parents who talk to their teens regularly about drugs are 42% less likely to use drugs than those who donβt, yet only a quarter of teens report having these conversations. For this Red Ribbon Week, be part of the conversation by taking the opportunity to talk to your child and help drive awareness of living a drug-free life.
This week, students at ALMS will participate in a SPIRIT week to celebrate Red Ribbon Week. Students will have the opportunity to participate in various activities, educating them about stress management and the risks of substance use. 8th graders will attend an assembly from NRHS students, educating them on refusal skills and handling peer pressure. Look at this weekβs SPIRIT week and help us live out our theme by Being Kind to Our Minds and speaking with your kids about Living Drug-Free.

Google Classroom How To - For Parents
For parents who are interested in receiving more information about their child's' Google Classroom work, please see the help article below. You may also view the video (below) for a quick summary of what Google Classroom and the Guardian Summaries look like.
Chromebook Responsibilities
To ALMS Parents and Students,
As a Middle School student, you are required to come to school with your district-provided chromebook charged. The district-provided chromebook is also your responsibility; if it's in your backpack, locker, on a bus, or at home, you must keep it protected from being damaged or lost/stolen.
Please refer to the AUP and Device Loaner Form, which you have signed with your parent/guardian, and review the terms and conditions listed on the form both inside and outside of school. If you have not already signed the AUP and/or Loaner Form, please click on the link above.
To all parents/guardians, please speak with your child regarding Chromebook care and responsibilities. Some of the computers are damaged due to students spilling liquids, tossing them to the ground during recess, getting knocked around in a backpack, or dropping them. Damaged Chromebooks are subject to fees. You may want to consider purchasing a case as was indicated on the school supply list.
You can refer to our Acceptable Use Policy and Device Loaner Form (linked above) for the CSDNR policy.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding!
