Franklin Families & Students,
February is a busy time of year as we begin a new semester and also start planning for the 2023-2024 school year. The new semester is also an opportunity for students to start with a clean slate as they also experience a new beginning. Students are encouraged to continue to use best practices learned in semester one or implement new practices to help them achieve success. We as a staff are recommitting to creating a sense of belonging for our students and increasing engagement. We will continue to center and demonstrate our school wide beliefs of Maximizing Relationships, Maximizing Engagement, and Maximizing Evidence of ability for every student and especially for historically underserved students.
We also want to congratulate our 9th grade class for reporting a 90.4% on track to graduate rate for Semester One. We know the challenges associated with adjusting to high school and are happy to see our 9th grade class excelling and being Franklin STRONG.
I want to thank our entire Franklin community for an amazing first semester, and extend best wishes to everyone for an outstanding second semester.
Franklin STRONG,
Chris Frazier
NEW: Have You Taken the Successful Schools Survey Yet?
Each year the Portland Public Schools community has an opportunity to participate in the Successful Schools Survey. The results will be used to help each school understand the needs of their students, staff and families, as well as support the development of their school climate and improvement plans. Our goal is 90% response rate, and we need your support in helping us achieve our goals!! You can complete the survey from a computer, tablet, or smartphone. It should only take 15-20 minutes of your time.
Survey window: January 27th - February 28th
The Successful Schools Survey provides many benefits to our district and school community as it:
is the only time PPS hears from students, staff, and families system-wide
gathers data which will help PPS/FHS understand experiences at our school/s
addresses school climate; which is a key component influencing outcomes for students
enables us to see improvements from last year to understand how our work in schools has changed perceptions
will be used as to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement

The Franklin BSU is proud to announce Franklin’s Black History Month Events
- Friday, February 3rd: Hoodies Up Day - Sign of solidarity in honoring the life of Trayvon Martin and opposing gun violence.

Black History Month is a time to educate the public and celebrate the contributions of Black Americans. There’s no one way to commemorate the Blacks who have made an impact on American history—the ways to immerse yourself in the Black culture are endless: Read books and poetry written by African American authors, watch movies crafted by Black filmmakers, visit an African-American cultural institution or event (near you or online), support Black owned business, or spark a conversation with a friend about how race and Black history has impacted your life.

Keeping Students and Staff Safe During the Winter
We ask that all families and students be mindful of the PPS Communicable Disease protocols as we look to keep our students and staff healthy during the winter.
PPS takes these steps to ensure healthy school environments so that in-person learning can continue. In accordance with CDC guidance, we are also urging families to take steps to protect themselves and minimize the spread of communicable diseases in our schools. Such precautions include:
- Keeping your student home when they are sick
- Making sure your student gets a flu shot
- Keeping your student up-to-date on the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters.
- Masking - people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask
- Washing your hands and avoiding touching your face
If your student presents symptoms of respiratory illness, including coughing, sneezing, runny nose, fever, or shortness of breath, please contact your health care provider right away.
You can also use the Self-Screening Tool to monitor symptoms or consult with your school nurse for your student’s return to school date.
The health and well-being of our students and staff is extremely important to us. We are keeping close track of the trends in our state and on the local level. PPS will continue to take all the steps necessary to maintain a healthy environment for our students and staff in the coming months.
