The earlier an accurate identification of Dyslexia is made, the sooner effective remediation can take place to avoid building poor reading habits. Unsuccessful reading efforts lead dyslexics to develop negative views about learning, which often lead to an unwillingness to read.

Charles Schwab explained his personal experience with dyslexia in an interview for USA Today (2003), "People decide you aren't working hard enough, or [you] are slow. I didn't quit, because I was really good in other things, terrific in math and science and anything that didn't deal with words. I was good in sports. I had good skills dealing with people."

Schwab finds reading easy on topics of finance, since the vocabulary is familiar. However, he utilizes audiobooks when reading about less familiar subjects. He told USA Today, "Thank goodness for all the new communication devices."

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
