Great Start
Well, we are finishing up our second week of CDL and I wanted to thank everyone for working to get our students online during their live teaching sessions. We have had nearly 100% attendance for the first two weeks which is so impressive! As we continue to navigate through CDL we will be finding ways to improve our systems both to make it easier for our students and families to participate and also for our teachers to provide a great learning experience for our students.
I truly appreciate how everyone is coming together to support the learning of our students, the school-home connection is more vital now than ever. Please reach out to the school if there is anything we can do to support you as we continue on this journey together.

Home Learning Space
- Please have your student online ready a few minutes prior to the start of their live session
- Keep their school supplies in their learning space so they have access to materials they need for class
- We know that our homes are not classrooms however, minimizing distractions will help your child be successful
If you are in need of any school supplies please reach out to the school, as the School Resource Room is available to help!
Benchmark Assessments
In order for your child to be successful in these assessments, we ask that your child is ready for their cohort time, has the password that their teacher has sent to them ready to go.
Math assessments will occur during the week of Oct. 8th, with more information coming regarding procedures for our k - 5 students.
Library Book Pick-up
The first drive-through library book pick-up at Ewing Young will be next Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 4 PM. This will be a trial run, with families who choose to participate in receiving one library book per student.
Students can go to the library resources section on their clever page, select library lessons, and find a step-by-step guide to accessing the school library digital catalog. This will explain how to place holds on books they are interested in.
Mr. Mariman will then look for one of these books to have ready for pick-up. Please place holds by Monday evening to allow for processing time.
You can also drop off books during these Wednesday time slots. If you have any books from last year please return them so other students can place holds on them.
A quick tip: Placing just one or two popular books on hold gives you a lower chance of getting one, but placing 4 to 6 holds on a variety of books gives you a very good chance to get one that you want.
Book Fair Oct. 19th - Nov. 1st
As we approach our VIRTUAL Book Fair week I wanted to take a second to talk about the importance of reading at home. Looking for ways to spend time with your child, build their reading skills, and help them to learn to love books? You can do all three when you read aloud or dedicate time for daily family reading. Here are some suggestions:
- Read regularly - try to read to your child every day or have family reading daily. You might aim for 10 - 15 minutes before bedtime for a younger child and 20 - 30 minutes for an older child. Not only is this a great reading habit, but it will also help to prepare for bed.
- Take turns choosing books - Your youngsters may want to hear old favorites, again and again, that is fine! When it's your turn to pick, add new titles and variety, such as nonfiction or poetry.
- Let them participate - Ask your child to turn the pages while you read. Also, they can finish sentences or fill in words they know. Go slowly so they have time to understand the story and look at the illustrations.
- Be playful - you can use different voices for different characters ( a high, squeaky voice for a mouse, or a deep, booming voice for a horse).
- Model - for the older students, modeling daily reading is important and a great way for everyone to unwind after a long day.
note: you don't have to be an expert reader - your child will love it when you read aloud.
Safe Oregon
How does the SafeOregon Tip Line work?
Students can access the SafeOregon system through a link on our school website or they may go directly to the safeoregon.com website. Tips can be submitted through the web form on the SafeOregon website, or by text, email, live call, and mobile app.
Why is there a need for a tip line system?
The number one reason why children do not report is the fear of retaliation from their peers. The SafeOregon Tip Line can be accessed from the privacy of a phone, home computer or other Internet equipped device, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student and thus, increasing the likelihood that a school safety threat would go unreported. I encourage you to learn more about the Tip Line by visiting the SafeOregon web site at www.safeoregon.com
Food Service
We have good news that allows us to make sure more students get the food they need. On Monday August 30, the USDA announced that we are able to operate the Summer Food Service Program until the end of December. This will allow any child age 1-18 to eat for free. We are going to continue with the delivery model that we have planned, and want to encourage everyone to take part in this. Deliveries will be on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am–1pm.
Even though this means anyone who signs up will be able to eat for free, I want to encourage all of you to still fill out the free/reduced meal application. We do not know if we will be allowed to continue with the Summer Food Service Program in January. It would be good to have this on file with any direction we go. In addition, those who apply and qualify for free/reduced lunch receive other benefits, like discounted fees associated with classes, sports and testing.
If you are signing up for the first time, use the Meal Delivery Sign Up link below. If you have already signed up for meal delivery and need to add children, please contact Naomi Adams at 503-554-4725. adams@newberg.k12.or.us
Please contact your school office, counselor or the nutrition department with any questions.
Here is a link- for more information and to submit an online free/reduced meal application.
Thank you,
