Check It Out!
MTRSD Elementary Libraries- February 2024
Exciting District Library Announcement!
MTRSD elementary libraries are excited to announce that our communities now have a new way to access books. SORA is a digital reading platform (similar to Libby, the app many use with their public library cards) that allows students to enjoy elementary-level e-books and audiobooks through their school Google accounts. Not only does this open up a world of books beyond what our physical libraries hold, but it also has accessibility features that make it a great option for our eager readers.
News from the BSE Library!
The cold, gray winter days continue, but it’s warm and cozy in the BSE library! Thanks for reading on to find out what BSE learners have been up to lately.
NEW Library Website
I’m excited to introduce the new BSE library website! This is a resource for students, staff, and caregivers. Please take a look around, and keep checking back as more features and news are added. Under the ‘Find Books’ tab, you’ll notice the link to our new online reading platform, SORA, as mentioned at the top of this newsletter. Enjoy exploring!
Mock Caldecott
A favorite schoolwide unit during our year in the library is the Mock Caldecott election. Each year the Caledcott medal is awarded to the illustrator of a children’s book with phenomenal artwork. Over the course of 2-4 library visits, classes read several outstanding picture books published in the last year, culminating in a dramatic vote for the one with the best illustrations. Some favorites in the lower grades were Mine! and Big. A popular one in the upper grades was the wordless picture book, The Tree and the River. Each year, it’s exciting for students to then find out which book wins the ‘real-deal’ Caldecott. This year, Big, by Vashti Harrison was chosen by the American Library Association as the medal winner. Please ask your kiddo about this powerful story, made even more poignant by stunning illustrations by Harrison, the first black woman to win this honor.
Digital Citizenship Lessons
Please be on the lookout for materials coming home with your child about their digital citizenship learning. K/1 classes had their first lessons last week, focusing on finding a happy balance between online and offline activities, and learning to “pause and think” to stay safe and have fun when online. Students in grades 2-6 continued their learning with lessons on privacy and security, digital footprints, and online friendships. These lessons offer kids the opportunity to share and discuss, and I’m often impressed with the critical thinking that is evident in their responses to ‘big idea’ questions.
Stay Tuned!
It’s not too early to mark your calendars for our annual Book Fair! This year, classes will visit the book fair during the week of March 18-22. The fair will be open to the entire community on March 21-22, during parent-teacher conferences. Please stay tuned for volunteer opportunities. We always appreciate your support in making this a successful fundraising event!
Sanderson Library Update
This February, the shelves in the Sanderson Library will feature books celebrating Black History month, Lunar New Year, and Valentine’s Day (I may even be tempted to bring out a few maple sugaring books, too!). As January came to an end, so did a couple of library programs. First, the MCBA book club finally finished its first book which was Air, by Monica Roe. Our book club was small but mighty, and I’m so proud of those kiddos for sticking with it! One of our members even baked a delicious chocolate cake to commemorate the end of the book! They are already asking, “what’s next?”
The end of January also marks the end of the Cover to Cover challenge, an initiative that encouraged 3-6th graders to read more chapter books from the library. For each book read, students could fill out a raffle ticket for a special Country Pie lunch in the library with Ms. Wilson and a friend of their choice. With twenty participants and a total of 71 books read, the Cover to Cover challenge was a wonderful success! Congratulations to 4th grader Brolen Hebert, this year’s big winner!
This month, 4 - 6 graders will continue their ongoing research projects as they practice navigating the online catalog and our collection of online databases, and learn about what makes a credible online source and how to find them. Third graders continue their work on their mini-library, and first and second graders will finish up their first cycle of library stations, where they have been practicing library skills such as reading spine labels, alphabetizing books, and playing computational games. At the end of the month, we will begin our 2nd annual Battle of the Books, a school-wide competition between 8 different picture books. This year’s Battle of the Books theme is….to be announced! Stay tuned!
News from the Colrain Central School Library!
Congrats to everyone who participated in Chloe The Cat’s January Reading Challenge. Thirty students participated and ten lucky students won a free book to keep. The next reading challenge will look different, so we will take a few weeks off to get organized for
it.
The library now has a Self Checkout Station set up. Students have been learning how to check books out independently. Older students who demonstrated that they can do this successfully have earned their Self Checkout License. It’s exciting to see students learning a new form of technology and gaining independence in the library.
Between the reading challenges, the arrival of new books, and the celebration of the American Library Association’s award winning books, the books have been flying off the library bookshelves. Please talk to your child about checking to make sure they have a safe place where they consistently put their books and that they know when to return them. Many students have a number of books checked out that they should find and bring back to school. Thank you!
