Message from the Principal
I hope this message finds you well. It's hard to believe that we've already completed the first month of the school year here at Nixon-Smiley Elementary! The enthusiasm and energy that our students have brought to the classrooms and hallways have been truly inspiring. It's heartwarming to see them actively engaged in their learning, forming new friendships, and embracing the challenges that come their way.
Our exceptional team of educators continues to pour their dedication into creating a vibrant and supportive learning environment tailored to each student's unique needs. Education thrives when school and home work hand in hand, and we're grateful for the partnership and involvement of our parents in this shared journey.
Peeking ahead, September holds a treasure trove of engaging events and initiatives for us. We have the heartwarming occasion of Grandparents Day, as well as a well-deserved break on Labor Day. Our beginning-of-the-year assessments have wrapped up and our interventions will begin this month. Our attendance incentives will begin with opportunities for students to win some prizes and brag tags!
Please do keep in touch through our various communication channels: our school website, newsletters, district APP (Rooms) and district Facebook page. Your thoughts and insights are valuable as we strive to ensure a meaningful educational journey for our students.
Your trust in us to nurture your child's education means the world. We're committed to inspiring and empowering your child to grow, lead, and serve through meaningful educational opportunities and experiences. Together, we'll continue crafting a school year filled with memories and growth.
If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. Your partnership is highly valued.
Thank you,
Mrs. Atkins
NSE Principal

A note from the Counselor:
This month we will be talking about empathy. We will discuss specific feelings. We will find out how to identify other’s feelings as well as our own. This will be discussed during Care Time on Tuesdays in your child’s classroom once every six weeks. Most of the time you will receive a note with your child to show you what we discussed in Care Time and how you can talk more about it at home. I will also be conducting small groups and individual counseling sessions as needed. If you have any concerns about your child please feel free to email me. cunninghamj@nixonsmiley.net
Healthy Kid Tip:
According to childrenshealth.com, the beginning of the year is a good time for kids and teens to focus on who they want to be and what they believe in. This can help them make good decisions and maintain strong mental health.
"Goals are future-oriented. So, if you want to get all A's, that's great, but it's not something you can do today," Dr. Westers says. "What you can do today is live your values to achieve your goals. If your goal is to get good grades, working hard is a value you can practice to achieve that goal. If your goal is to make friends, kindness could be a good value to support that."
Setting aside some time for kids and teens to focus on their values and goals at the beginning of the year can help them focus on the person they want to be and foster strong mental health.
Character Trait of the Month
We will continue with Empathy during September!
What is Empathy?
Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.
Why focus on Empathy?
- Empathy builds positive classroom culture. Empathy empowers students to learn to understand each other to build trust and safety in the classroom.
- Empathy strengthens community. Empathy helps students strengthen their relationships with classmates, other students and adults at school, and at home.
- Empathy prepares your students to be leaders in their community. The best leaders understand the people they lead and are able to show they care.
Empathy in Action:
- Take a different perspective. When you take a different perspective, you put aside your own feelings and reactions to see the situation through another’s eyes.
- Put aside judgment. Take a pause and rather than express conclusions about a situation based on what you see, step back and consider other things you may still need to know or understand.
- Communicate that you understand. Instead of giving advice, respond with reflective phrases like, “It sounds like you...” or “I hear that you...” to express that you understand and care.
All parents need to sign up for ROOMS. Watch the video below to learn how to use the app.
