Volume 4 Issue 10 - May 2023
A Letter from the Headmaster
Dear Parents,
What a great school year this has been! I think back to August with our Back to School Bash, the Constitution Day Celebration in September, the annual Golf Tournament in October, the annual Winter Dinner in January, and most recently, the inaugural Sporting Clays Tournament. I am so thankful for the flurry of support our school receives from parents who are vested in the mission of SJCA. Nestled among these events are the many concerts, performances, musicals, award ceremonies, athletic events, and, whew, everything else. What's most exciting, above all, is the traditional learning that occurs daily on our campus.
Our seniors, who have worked so hard all year long, will soon graduate. I was so impressed with each senior thesis and their defense. I am truly proud of each of our graduates and look forward to the fun and honoring events we have planned for them in the month of May. I encourage you to continue to trust the Hillsdale curriculum all the way through to graduation. Much thought went into our curriculum, and if we just stay on course, we will see fruitful results in the lives of these scholars. We aren't just trying to earn early college credit, we are building intelligent, virtuous American citizens.
I love our scholars and families, as well as our teachers and staff. Working together, we are meeting the mission of our school. Enjoy the month of May and have a great summer break!
Lion Strong!
Mr. Johnson

2023 FJCL Latin State Forum
Twelve of our SJCA Latin Club scholars attended the 2023 FJCL Latin State Forum. At forum, our scholars competed against 900 other Latin students across the state of Florida in various academic, artistic, and athletic competitions. They had been preparing so diligently for the forum, studying their testing category and making their art projects for the competition. I am happy to say that their hard work has absolutely paid off. These scholars had the most wonderful time at the convention representing our school with the utmost citizenship. Along with Mrs. McCue as our chaperone, I had the opportunity to witness our scholars shine and share pure camaraderie with each other and other schools at the convention.
The following scholars were in attendance: Cassandra Griffiths, Kyla Daughtry, Danica Nguyen, Julia McCue, John Moody, Patrick Moody, Sarah Moody, Grace Morris, Joe Morris, Anaé Saint-Fort, Ethan Saint-Fort, and Ory’An Saint-Fort. Our 12 scholars won a total of 16 awards, therefore, a total of 1600 points for their respective houses.
Julia McCue also received a scholarship for a paid trip to the National Latin Convention this summer. Congratulations, Julia!

An appointment is required. Please call 904-529-2800
to schedule your appointment.
A parent or legal guardian MUST accompany the children.

Student Services Department
End of the Year Wrap Up
Parents of ESE students please complete the Parent Survey for the state at www.esesurvey.com by June 1st.
The Student Services department is available Monday-Thursday from 2:25-3:25 pm (12:25-1:25 pm on Wednesdays) in room 203 for Upper School students to receive help with missing/incomplete assignments or to just have a place to complete homework.
For more information, please contact Mrs. Livesay (angela.livesay@stjca.org) or Mrs. McGinn (sally.mcginn@stjca.org).
There are only 4 weeks left in the 4th quarter, and FAST testing began this week. We ask that parents continue to check their students’ grades in Synergy and be sure your scholar has all assignments turned in and tests/quizzes made up before the last week of school. Please do not rely on the “missing assignments” column in ParentVue. Not all teachers use the missing assignment column, so you need to click on the Q4 tab under each class to view individual grades and see if your scholar has any assignments/quizzes/tests to complete. Please contact your scholar’s teacher directly about specific assignments/quizzes/tests.
If you need assistance from the Student Services department, here is our contact information:

SJCA Health Room
End of the Year Wrap Up
Scholars with Meds in Health Room
All medications in the clinic must be picked up by a parent before the last day of school. The clinic will be open during school hours in May and until 12:30 the last 3 half days of school. Any medications that are not picked up will be discarded.
Returning scholars with a health condition requiring medication to be kept in the health room will need new 2023-2024 paperwork filled out with a signed order from a healthcare provider. Medications will not be accepted at orientation unless the paperwork is complete. Please be sure medications are not expired and are labeled with the scholar’s name. Prescription drugs must be in the original packaging/bottle with the pharmacy label. Any over-the-counter meds must be new in the package as well.
If you have any questions about keeping medication in the school health room or which forms need to be filled out, please email us at healthroom@stjca.org or call 904-458-8240 option 2.
Scholars with Health Conditions
Our goal is to maintain an optimal learning environment and that starts with physically and mentally healthy scholars. Confidential Zoom, phone, or in-person conferences with the school nurse can be requested at any time during the school year to further discuss your child’s health condition. Scholars spend a lot of time at our school, and we strive to be prepared for any possible situations or emergencies.
To make an appointment, please email us at healthroom@stjca.org or call 904-458-8240 option 2.
Kindergarten and New Scholar Requirements
Incoming kindergarteners and all new scholars are required by the State of Florida to have a DH 3040 school entry physical exam dated within the past calendar year and completed DH 680 (Certificate of Immunization). If you have a new scholar starting this fall, please have the required forms signed by a healthcare provider as soon as possible. New scholar registration will begin May 1st and all completed forms must be uploaded by May 5, 2023, to ensure they keep their seat. If there are any issues or concerns please email Enrollment.
7th-grade Requirements
All returning scholars entering 7th grade will also need a recent Tdap (tetanus). Scholars will not be allowed on campus without a completed DH 680 or DH 681 (Religious Exemption) form signed by a healthcare provider. This is required by the State of Florida for all adolescents entering 7th grade.
Athletes
If your scholar is considering participating in sports next year, please take the time this summer to have a sports physical done as well. Most healthcare providers will fill out the necessary paperwork at the same time as a well-child physical exam. If your child has suffered a recent injury, has a heart condition, or has any other health issue that may affect them playing sports, be sure to make time to have their specialist clear them for sports as well.
For Your Information
Normal well-child exams are free with most insurances. All school-required immunizations are free at the Clay County Health Department (CCHD). The CCHD can also do sports physicals for $25, school entry physicals for $25, and combination sport/school entry physicals for $40.
