Thursday, November 11 - Veterans Day - No School

Our K class will be visiting Main Street in Buckhannon on November 5 to explore community helpers. We will depart HES at 8:30 a.m. and return by 1:30 p.m.

We will:
* visit the Upshur County Courthouse for a tour
* walk through First Community Bank
* meet the Mayor Buckhannon and see City Hall
* see the Buckhannon Post Office and how our mail gets to us
* tour the Buckhannon Fire Department,
* visit the Buckhannon City Police department
* eat lunch at Stockert Youth Center
* Sweetie, the ice cream truck, will visit us for a special treat

Students will be provided with a school packed lunch. If you plan to send your child's lunch, please pack it in a "brown bag."

Unfortunately, we have planned the tours for the students and staff only due to spacing restrictions in some of the places we will visit. Parents will be invited to another trip in the future.

After waiting for what seems like forever, we received our new cafeteria tables this week. The tables we had in our cafeteria were as old as Mrs. Phillips!! They were the original tables that came with the school when it was built in 1967. Because our students have taken care of them, they will have a new home at the Upshur County Livestock building.

Our new tables complement our school with their dark green color to show our school spirit. They fold into benches when not in use as a table!

Thank you to Upshur County Schools for providing us with these brand new tables!!

Wow!!! What a great month we've had------all of this in addition to learning every day!

Once again, we didn't let the rain dampen our ability to have fun and enjoy the day!!

All students traveled to the Wildlife Center for our Halloween party. All students had 3 activities: lunch, walking through the animal exhibit, and WVU Extension Service and Mountaineer Food Bank Fruit & Veggie Market.

A huge thank you to our parents for being patient as we tried to crowd into the pavilion to avoid the rain! Had the weather cooperated, we were going to spread out!!!

No matter what the weather, everyone had a great time and went home with a huge bag of fresh fruit and veggies!

Our students celebrated Halloween early in the week with several STEAM activities: pumpkin oobleck, directing a pumpkin, pumpkin rolling, building a candy corn tower, and a fun Halloween movie.

The rainy weather couldn't stop our annual Tub or Treat. Students gathered in the lobby while everyone handing out candy lined the hallway. Students walked through gathering treats on their way.

Students left with buckets FULL of treats! Thank you to everyone who provided treats to our students. A special thank you to the Warren District Fire Department for bringing their fire truck and handing out candy!

Our Core Beliefs / Mission

We at HES are dedicated to providing all students with knowledge and skills to become college and career ready in an environment emphasizing the PAX Good Behavior Game, which includes peace, productivity, health and happiness with the core belief “I better my world, and I better myself.”

It is our desire to:

- Provide a nurturing, consistent environment which emphasizes the development of the individual child’s social, emotional, physical, and academic growth.

- To teach all children so they may achieve their highest academic potential utilizing authentic learning experiences, to build a foundation to become college and career ready, and to be lifelong learners.

- To guide all children in becoming leaders, problem solvers, and listeners.

- To encourage appropriate relationships through parent and community involvement in the school.

Our Goal:

Hodgesville Elementary School will have an increase of at least 1.0 GE growth for 40% of our students as based on beginning of the year to end of the year data for 2021 – 2022 end of year assessments for Math and English Language Arts.
