VISION SCREENING MONDAY FOR ALL FRESHMEN!
WHAT'S UP IN SPANISH CLASSES?
Spanish students reviewed vocabulary by matching Spanish and English words. They needed to speak only in Spanish to find their match!
WHAT ARE AP ENVIRONMENTAL STUDENTS UNCOVERING?
Our passionate AP Environmental Science students have been hard at work in the lab, uncovering the secrets hidden beneath the surface of the Earth! In their latest project, they've been knee-deep in a fascinating sediment lab for soil analysis, exploring properties that hold the key to altering the rate of infiltration and soil permeability.
Why does it matter, you ask? Well, buckle up for a ride into the realms of agriculture, wastewater treatment, and more! These invaluable findings aren't just academic; they're the foundation for sustainable farming practices, efficient water usage, and ensuring a healthier environment for all.
The Freshmen in World History and Geography examined the different governmental structures of Imperial China. Students created a poster where they evaluated the effectiveness of two different Chinese Dynasties (see photos). The best thing about this assessment was that there was no wrong answer. So long as students defended their evaluations with logic and evidence everyone's answers were correct!
Meanwhile in U.S. History, the Sophomores are in the middle of learning about the Great Depression. They are taking a look at some of the underlying causes as well as a deep look at the hardships people faced during the Depression. To wrap up the semester students will take a look at President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal and attempts by the government to ease some of the problems faced during the Great Depression.
The upperclassmen taking U.S. History In-Depth continue to dive into World War II's Pacific war. Recently students have been learning what it was like to fight on the islands of the Pacific, as well as examining the decision to use nuclear weapons at the end of the war. Additionally, students are working on a food history project. Each student has an era of U.S. History and they will create a report on popular foods, how food was prepared during that time, and more. To close out the project each student will prepare a popular dish from their era to share with the class.
11th grade Government students have been busy learning about the role the media plays in today's political landscape as well as the election processes used to elect Congress and the President. The classes thoroughly investigated the Electoral College learning not only how it works but whether other alternatives might be better. Now the classes are beginning to take a close look at how the legislative and executive branches are structured and operate.
Sociology students are continuing to analyze the many different social institutions that make up society as a whole. Having recently finished investigating the role of the family in society, including current trends regarding marriage and divorce in America, the students are now looking at the role religion has played and continues to play in shaping society.
THE BUILDING WIDE CANNED FOOD DRIVE HAS BEEN EXTENDED ANOTHER WEEK!

ATTENTION SOPHOMORE PARENTS: EARLY MIDDLE COLLEGE PRESENTATION FROM LAST WEEK!
Dear Sophomore Parent:
The Berrien County Early/Middle College (EMC) is a 5-year high school program where students can get a head start on college and their career by earning an associate degree or certificate for FREE! Students have the opportunity to earn both a high school diploma and one of the following:
substantial transferable college credits
technical or career certificate
opportunity to begin a registered apprenticeship
or an associate degree
Students apply for the program during their sophomore year of high school. If accepted, participants take college classes during 11th and 12th grades, and then attend college full time during their 5th year of high school to complete the program.
An informational session about the Early Middle College was held last week at the high school. The presentation, itself, has been included in the electronic newsletter that came home to you on December 15th via your email. If you have questions or would like to learn more about this opportunity, please reach out to Melisssa Springsteen, the Early Middle College Consultant, at 269.471.7725 ext. 3304 or Jamie Dawson, the WHS School Counselor, at 269.463.0730.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN BIOLOGY?
In biology, we are learning about photosynthesis. The students are working with molecule manipulatives to help them visualize the changes that are occurring in photosynthesis. In anatomy, the students are learning the muscles of the body. This week the students completed a muscle speed dating activity where they were assigned a single muscle and had to find their match in the class using the concept of opposites attract. For example, biceps and triceps work opposite to one another and therefore are a perfect match for one another. We had a lot of fun talking about the jobs, activities, and locations of these muscles in pairs around the room.
THANK YOU !
THANK YOU to all of our parents and community members who donated to our Interact goody bags for a local senior home. The Interact members used the Wednesday early release day to decorate and assemble the goody bags. Check out the pictures below!
The next Interact Project for January will be a project for School Board Appreciation Month!
TRADES FIELD TRIPS
Every month, our Panthers have to opportunity to make a trades related field trip to a place of business, a school, or a program. In December, a hand full of students opted to attend the Alro Steel and Lyons Industries field trip to learn more about what it is like to work in a manufacturing setting. We are excited to be able to provide these opportunities for students. Check out the cool pictures below!

FAFSA UPDATES FOR SENIOR PARENTS--The New FAFSA is Coming Soon!
As the opening of FAFSA season finally approaches, we want to share some updates and resources. In December 2020, Congress passed the Consolidated Appropriations Act, which included the FAFSA Simplification Act. This act reduces the number of questions on the application, expands Pell Grant eligibility, and removes outdated restrictions to increase access to federal aid. While the updates may be challenging to navigate at first, we trust they will benefit students and their families in the long term.
This year's FAFSA will open by Dec. 31, 2023. In future years, the FAFSA will resume its opening date of Oct. 1.
The FAFSA Simplification Act has resulted in several changes, starting with the 2024-25 FAFSA. Here are a few of the major changes:
- The application will be streamlined and contain new terminology.
- Since all Michigan public school students receive free lunch, students and parents/guardians should check that box when filing the FAFSA. This will allow them to forgo the asset questions.
- The FAFSA will use a different calculation to determine a student's financial aid eligibility. This Kiplinger article is helpful.
- Financial information can be pulled directly from the IRS to streamline FAFSA filing.
- The term Estimated Family Contribution (EFC) will change to the Student Aid Index (SAI). The Michigan Achievement Scholarship will change eligibility requirements accordingly.
Because the FAFSA is opening much later than usual, you can anticipate that award letters will also arrive later. MCAN will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available, but here are important actions you can do right now:
- Share this checklist from uAspire with seniors and their families. It is also available in Spanish and Arabic.
- Share this letter and contributors info sheet with seniors and their families. Spanish and Arabic versions are also available.
- Review and download relevent MCAN FAFSA Resources. This collection will be updated as more information becomes available.
- Provide opportunities during the school day for students to create an FSA ID and make sure their FAFSA contributors do as well. Information is in the document to be shared with families, noted above.
- Complete the MI Student Aid Data Use Agreement to access the counselor portal and view TIP and FAFSA completion.
- Use this High School Action Plan to plan how to best support your students with the FAFSA and who can support these completion efforts.
- Reach out to regional college representatives and arrange dates for on-site visits at your school to support FAFSA completion efforts in the winter and spring.
- Schedule admissions events and/or orientations with your local community colleges to support student financial aid, registration, and testing efforts. Although this does not happen until the spring, college representatives appreciate you making arrangements in advance.
You can find information on Michigan scholarships and grants here on the State of Michigan Scholarship and Grant Programs website. The State of Michigan also has provided a Planning & Paying for College in Michigan brochure.

3 and a B has a new option!
Courtesy of your Student Advisory Council to the Principal, we are adding 5 and an A to the 3 and a B program starting immediately. That means that if your child has an 80% or higher in any class at the end of the semester with 3 or fewer absences, your child is exempt from the exam at the end of the semester in that class. Keep in mind, your child always have the option to take an exam no matter what if he/she chooses.
Additionally, if your child has a 90% or higher and 5 or fewer absences, your child is exempt from the exam at the end of the semester in that class.
The ONLY absences that do not count towards this total are school related absences like field trips and class trips. This new incentive starts right away. If your child does not have to take an exam, your child is not obligated to be in school.
