Happy First Week of School!
We had a great first week at Barton Graded School! Our Barton Tiger joined our whole school assembly on the first day to kick off the new year. We introduced students to our new community agreements:
Barton Tigers are Caring.
Barton Tigers are Understanding.
Barton Tigers are Brave.
Barton Tigers are Safe.
Students are working as a community to earn tokens for exhibiting Caring, Understanding, Brave and Safe behaviors. Ask your child if they earned a token this week. Throughout the school year, you may hear about celebrations when we reach our goals for positive behaviors. This week Mrs. Spear's third and fourth grade students celebrated their positive behaviors by bringing a stuffed animal friend to school on Friday.
Butlers Bus Company also visited on our first day of school to review and practice with students our bus expectations. We also practiced our bus evacuation drill.
As outlined in our handbook "Transportation to and from school is a privilege granted to pupils. This privilege is conditional, based on students complying with the established rules. We may have cameras on any of our buses. " Please take a few minutes to review our bus expectations outlined below with your child(ren) routinely. Thank you for your support.

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports
Beginning this school year, our school is participating in an important initiative. It is called Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS).
What is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support?
PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school’s ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans. PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings. PBIS is not a program or a curriculum. It is a team-based process for systemic problem solving, planning, and evaluation. It is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.
What is PBIS at our school?
We have adopted a unified set of expectations/agreements that define our expectations for behavior in all school settings. You will see these expectations/agreements posted throughout the school and your child will be learning them during their first days at school. Our unified expectations/agreements found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school and on the bus are as follows:
Agreement #1: We are caring.
Agreement #2: We are understanding.
Agreement #3: We are brave.
Agreement #4: We are safe.
