SHES Weekly Update
August 5th, 2022

Updates for the Week of May 1 - 5, 2023
Dear Shadow Hills Families,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude for our incredible week together. It was a pleasure to be a part of the engaging learning experiences and meaningful events like Financial Literacy Night, Mother-Son Skate Night, and Lunch on the Lawn. Spending time with our students and families outside school was a joy. The laughter and occasional tumble brought such a genuine sense of community, and seeing our students connect in new and different ways was genuinely heartwarming. I cannot thank our amazing PTA enough for their hard work in creating memorable events for our community.
As we move forward, I want to remind our families that Monday is the last day to purchase Shadow Hills 2022-2023 yearbooks. Please take a moment to use the link below and ensure you don't miss out on this special keepsake.
For our third through fifth-grade families, please note that students will be leaving their district-issued computers at school beginning May 8th. Please send your child to school on Monday, May 8th, with their charged computer and charger. To ensure a smooth transition, please take a moment with your child to watch the video below.
As we look forward, I am thrilled to share that we will be celebrating both Staff Appreciation Week and the APEX Fun Run in two weeks. Please take a moment to review the flyers below for specific details about the week's events and how you can participate. Our staff members play an integral role in our school community, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to show them our appreciation.
I'm looking forward to another fantastic week here at Shadow Hills, and as always, please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Meris
Character Education - Perseverance
Here at school, we have been very busy learning about perseverance- what it means, and how we can practice it! Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help you child continue to learn about the theme of perseverance through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! We have really enjoyed exploring this topic at school, and I hope your family will enjoy it just as much!
Reading About It
Here are some books to help you learn more perseverance:
Practice It!
Help your child learn to persevere by engaging in difficult tasks with him/her. Buy a large puzzle, learn and perfect a new skill, etc. Find something to do together and commit to pushing each other through the challenge.
Talk About It!
Here are some discussion points to help you talk about perseverance with your child:
- What do you think perseverance means and why is it important?
- Tell me about someone when it was hard to get through a challenge. How did you feel after?
- What are some things that are hard for you to push through, and how can I help you?
- What are 3 goals you have? What may be some challenges to meeting these goals? What will happen if you don't give up?

LCAP
The LCAP, or Local Control Accountability Plan, is our district plan for improving student achievement. As we begin to make adjustments to our LCAP, it is vital that we have our educational partners' feedback on this plan.
Your input will assist us in providing our students with an excellent education. The short survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. We would greatly appreciate your feedback. Click here to take the survey.
CAASPP
Our state testing is just a few weeks away! Tune in for some helpful preparation tips for students.
The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) is a statewide test that assesses student's academic proficiency in English language arts/literacy and mathematics. It is administered annually to students in grades three through eight and high school. The test is aligned with the Common Core State Standards, which are academic benchmarks that describe what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. The CAASPP measures students' knowledge and skills, provides information on how well schools are meeting the needs of their students, and identifies areas for improvement. The results of the CAASPP can be used to guide instruction and support student learning, ensuring that every student is on track to meet college and career readiness standards.

PTA Board Nominations
PTAs are vital to schools as they provide a valuable bridge between the school administration and families. PTAs are comprised of dedicated parents, teachers, and staff members who work together to promote the welfare of students and enhance the educational experience. They fundraise for essential school programs, organize events that unite families, and provide valuable support to teachers and staff. By joining your school's PTA board, you can make a real difference in your child's education and the lives of other students in your community. Your involvement in the PTA also provides you with a voice and an opportunity to be part of the decision-making process in your child's school. By coming together and working towards common goals, PTAs can positively impact the education and well-being of our children.
ELAC/DELAC
Attending the ELAC/DELAC meeting is crucial for parents and students. It is an opportunity to learn about the resources available to ELL students, including support services and programs. Parents can ask questions, voice concerns, and provide feedback on their child's education and experiences. Attending the meeting is also a chance to connect with other families in similar situations and build a support network. The ELAC/DELAC meeting can provide valuable information and insight into students' academic and social lives, leading to better outcomes and success in the future.
Staff Appreciation Week - May 8 - 12, 2023
Staff Appreciation Week is a special time dedicated to showing our gratitude and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the teachers and staff who make our schools run smoothly. This week is an opportunity to recognize and honor the efforts of the people who devote their time and energy to educate and care for our students. It's a time to show appreciation for the hours of preparation, teaching, grading, counseling, and extra-curricular activities they undertake daily. Acknowledging their contributions can build strong relationships between teachers and students and create a positive school culture that values and celebrates everyone's efforts. Staff Appreciation Week is a beautiful way to show appreciation for the essential role that teachers and staff play in our lives and communities.
SHES APEX Fun Run
The APEX Fun Run provides all students with the best possible education and school experience, regardless of their financial situation. In addition, all students are included in the leadership and fitness program to encourage growth and learning for all. The Apex Leadership Co. provides a 2-week interactive program focused on leadership, character-building, and fitness, all while helping schools raise much-needed funds. The 2022-2023 program's theme is X-Factor, which aims to develop student self-control, decision-making, and interpersonal skills vital for success in school and life. The program's lessons are quick, engaging, and tied into the school's vision and mission to encourage a positive environment and inspire students.
