The Buzz
Hello Florida Ruffin Ridley School Families and Friends,
Happy Indigenous Peoples Day, today we celebrate and honor indigenous American people and commemorate their history and culture. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October.
If you have been watching the news, then you know the current violence that is taking place in the Middle East Region. Please see the correspondence below from our Superintendent. Please know that tomorrow, Claire Galloway -Jones, Senior Director of Educational Equity, and the Clinical Team will be present at school to support teachers, students, and families. Teachers and Staff have also been given guidance to help support students. My thoughts are with all families, who are impacted.

Highlight of the WEEK
Greetings from K-2!
The start of school has been a whirlwind of excitement for our youngest students in the building! It has been so refreshing to see students smiling, engaged, and excited as they walk throughout the hallways and in classrooms.
The first six weeks of school is both a critical and exciting time for both our students and staff. Together they are building warm and welcoming classrooms by getting to know each other, creating classroom communities, and building trust. Staff are explaining and practicing the routines and expectations in their classroom to help create a sense of predictability and comfort for all students. As the first six weeks of school come to an end, the sense of community in classrooms and understanding of the “how to’s” have our students ready to learn!
Our Kindergarten students have been getting acclimated to the building and everything it has to offer. In addition to everything that comes with being in a new classroom/school, kindergartners have had many firsts, including eating lunch in such a big space, participating in specials in their respective spaces, exploring the garden, and being part of the bigger FRR community.
Our first and second graders have been busy getting to know each other and routines! Students are building off of their skills and knowledge gained in kindergarten and first grade to help the transition to a bustling school day filled with exciting explorations, partner work, centers, and increased responsibilities. Our staff is hard at work getting to know their students as individuals and as learners!
The time between the first six weeks of school and winter break is an opportunity for student growth and progress. It can also be a time of challenge, fatigue, and maybe some new behaviors, both at school and at home. In these instances we rely on our classroom community, patience, and supporting the whole child.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher, K-2 guidance counselor, Jordana Spitz (jordana_spitz@psbma.org) or K-2 vice principal, Steve Simolaris (steven_simolaris@psbma.org).
Best,
Steve Simolaris

After School Supervision
We do expect that even though the school day is over that our students are all still following our expectations of contributing positively and safely to the community. We understand that there are many students who stay after school on the grounds unsupervised by adult. If your child will be in our community spaces after school hours unsupervised please have a conversation reminding them of ways to show kindness, empathy, inclusion, and respect for all and ways in which they can intervene or get help if they see something that is unsafe or violates our community norms. Working together we can help support safe and inclusive spaces that help foster autonomy, responsibility, and independence for our students.
