Self-Care Reflection and Note from MENDING MATTERS Intern, Emma:
Whenever I find myself overwhelmed, I remember times when I was overwhelmed before. I remember being in high school and how concerned I was about things that I don't even think about anymore. And I remember the compassion and wisdom I have now. I think about how gently I would talk to my teenage self about my concerns. I think about my future self doing the same thing for myself today. She would listen to my concerns and let me process how I was feeling. She would then tell me that what I was overwhelmed about at the moment was no longer a stressor for me in the future. It's easy to get lost in the day-to-day of our lives. Often the things that are most stressful are things that are temporary. Future you wants you to know that not only did you get through it, but that it gets better on the other side.
So here's what you can do to practice this:
1. Grab something to write on and something to write with
2. Tap into your future self and all of the wisdom and compassion that you've developed to write a letter to your current self
3. Write down how you got through what you're going through right now
4. Write down the things that you've done really well
5. List some reasons that your future self would be proud of you right now
As you continue to go through what is overwhelming you, read through the letter you wrote yourself. Sometimes what we need is a reminder that we are doing our best and who better to tell us than our future selves. You got this!
Virtual Support Groups For Students:
LGBTQ+ and Allies Group: For students in the LGBTQ+ community or allies of the community to connect with one another.
Spanish Speaking Group: A general support group for students who speak Spanish.
Coping with COVID-19: A group for students who have been specifically affected by the pandemic. Discusses coping skills and ways to access support.
Grief and Loss Group: A group for students who have experienced grief and loss either by the pandemic or other circumstances.
Additionally, we are starting an after-school program called Skills for Life that will help students develop skills related to social-emotional, financial, academic, career and otherwise.
Students of all racial and ethnic backgrounds can learn more about postsecondary options while possibly getting a scholarship or on-the-spot college admission by participating in the Black College Expo.
The expo will include representatives from about 50 historically black colleges and universities. It will be completely virtual this year, giving even more students the opportunity to take part. Students will get all the advantages of the in-person event without having to worry about transportation.
High school students and education professionals can register for free.
Students who plan to attend also have the chance to win a scholarship from the National College Resources Foundation by submitting a short essay by Feb. 8.
Matadors we encourage you to attend!
