What a busy week it was last week! Some of our Year 3-6 students competed at the Zone Athletics Carnival in a range of field and finals track events. Not to be outdone by the senior students, the K-2 Athletics Carnival was held on Friday morning on the school field. The students participated in a range of events and everyone seemed to have a great time. It certainly looks like we will have some talented athletes in the years to come! Thank you to the K-2 teachers for running such a great event, in particular Mrs Whittaker and Mrs Twitchings who organised the carnival.
On Wednesday we had our annual Book Parade which saw the majority of students and teachers dress as their favourite book character. There were some very original costumes and it was great to see so many students get into the spirit and dress up for the event. Thank you to parents and carers for creating some fantastic costumes. Special thanks goes to Mrs Macdonald for organising this event. To see some photos of the K-2 Athletics Carnival and the Book Parade, go to the school's website www.banksmeado-p.schools@det.nsw.edu.au
On Wednesday the SRC also ran a wonderful assembly. The SRC works hard to provide opportunities for the students to support different charities. They also delivered some important messages to our students.
School photos were held on Thursday. It was a very busy day for many students but some fabulous photos were taken and will make a great keepsake for years to come.
This week has a couple of important events - the Band students will be performing at Big Band Bash on Wednesday and our Open Night is on this Thursday night. If you have any relatives, friends or neighbours who may be interested in enrolling their child at Banksmeadow Public School next year, please encourage them to come along for a tour of the school and to hear about the many programs we offer. We are now accepting Kindergarten enrolments for 2017.
Ms Hoskins
Acting Principal
Don't forget the important events this week:
* Miss Vicki's dance lessons resume this week
* Big Band Bash on Wednesday
* Donations for the Father's Day Stall are now being accepted in the school office
* Money for Father's Day Stall on Friday
* It would be appreciated if all invoices could be finalised before the end of the term please
PBL Expected Behaviours
Positive Behaviour for Learning, known as PBL, is an evidence-based whole school systems approach that:
- addresses the diverse academic and social needs of every student to support them to be successful
- supports students in early childhood settings through to senior years of schooling
- enables schools to establish a continuum of supports that are intensified to meet the needs of every student
- is team driven, using a problem solving approach that engages students, parents and all school staff
- establishes positive social expectations for all in the school community
- provides a framework for the school and its community to collectively support the wellbeing of every student.
When implemented well:
- students respond positively as they have been taught what is expected of them
- staff deliver consistent responses to student learning and behaviour
- students feel safe and cared for at school. Their parents, family and community are more involved in their school
- unproductive and challenging behaviour can be significantly reduced for most students.
Banksmeadow Public School subscribes to the Positive Behaviour for Learning Framework. You would be aware that we have four expectations of which all students from P-6 are aware: safe, respectful, resilient, active learners. All students are explicitly taught the behaviours that will contribute to meeting these expectations of our school. You may see some 'Expected Behaviour Matrix' posters around the school, as well as on the large noticeboards in the school office. These posters will help to remind students of the positive behaviours that are expected at Banksmeadow Public School. Each fortnight we will have two focus behaviours. Students who are seen displaying these behaviours in the playground may receive a raffle ticket. These raffle tickets will go into the draw to receive a prize at the end of the fortnight.
Please discuss with your child the focus behaviours and encourage them to follow these expectations. This fortnight's expected behaviours are:
- wear my school uniform with pride
- look after school property
Dance Fever
Our Dance Challenge at Homebush Sports Stadium is coming up next week - Thursday 8th September. A note will be sent home this week with all of the details about the evening, including the meeting times and what each child is expected to wear. The students will need to bring some different clothes for the whole school dance, so please make sure you ask your child for the Dance Fever note this week to make sure you can organise what your child requires for the evening.

Parent 'Tell Them From Me' Surveys
Tell Them From Me Surveys for parents are now open. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. It should only take about 15 minutes or less and is entirely confidential.
Information from this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.
Please complete the survey by visiting https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/zz95f before 21st October.
Year 6's Cirque Du Soleil Recounts
Last Wednesday night, Year 6 was lucky enough to attend a performance of Cirque Du Soleil. Thank you to Rachel and the Australian Children's Music Foundation (ACMF) who gave us tickets to attend the show. It was an experience that I am sure will be remembered by all of the lucky students (and teachers) who attended. Read below for some recounts of the night as written by Year 6 students.
We arrived at the giant stripy big top, excitement buzzed through the air. We bought our mouth-watering food and beverages and waited impatiently for the show to start, as soon as the lights dimmed we knew the show was about to begin. There was a moment of silence then the lights came on to show a figure standing with a kite. An invisible string lifted the kite upwards to give the illusion that the little boy in his stripy jump suit and funny little hat was flying it. Suddenly a post man came in on a bike carrying a rather large package, the package was for the little boy. The little boy walked carefully towards the huge parcel, he slowly tore the brown packaging to reveal a peculiar looking red box. Then suddenly BANG!!!!!! a tall slim person in a striped jumpsuit jumped out of the box. He waved his arms magically and did a few flips then the acts started to begin. Tight ropes, unicycles and the wheel of death, just to name a few. Everyone was on the edge of their seats throughout the whole performance and all eyes were glued to every trick, trip and fall. It was truly a wonderful show. By Sophie, Erin and Hannah
One by one we pulled up into school waiting excitedly for everyone to arrive. Once all 27 of us were there, Mr Murphy took us all up to the bus. As we boarded, we began to chatter amongst ourselves in a frenzy. On this night we were off to see Cirque Du Soleli - Kooza (Kooza meaning circus in a box). We reached our destination, the entertainment quarter. We hopped off the bus, running through the rain. We took a photo and quickly ran inside where we scanned our tickets and smelt the salty, buttery popcorn. We rushed along into the dark, mysterious tent. We jumped into our seats in excitement and saw movement behind the curtains. We waited in anticipation for the show to start when suddenly a siren went off, indicating the show was about to begin. There were some amazing stunts and some terrifying moments. There were so many performers, from clowns running, acrobatics flipping, contortionists twisting, tight rope walkers maintaining balance and men on giant metal poles. Our favourite highlight was the two men on a hamster wheel. They were doing flips, turns, and were skipping - one man almost fell off the top of the hamster wheels but saved himself. We would highly recommend everyone goes to see the show whilst it is in Sydney. By Carpice, Shae, Mya and Lili.
