THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - March 26, 2021
The Principal's Corner
Hi everyone
We are so happy that our 7th and 8th graders will be back in school four days a week beginning this Monday, To make this happen we have taken over various spaces in the building and created an additional essential art, Library, for our 7th graders. All of these changes were necessary to allow our 7th and 8th graders to be seated six feet apart in the classrooms. As with all of the changes this year, our staff jumped in with a can-do attitude to make it happen. We keep saying it, but we love our staff!
While this is happening we have been busy organizing interviews to replace retiring and departing staff members. The good news is that so far we have been attracting a number of candidates who seem quite talented. It is clear by the number and quality of applicants that HCS has a strong reputation among educators. This is a testament to our families, our staff, our district, and most importantly, our students.
In another sign of spring, we are digging in to begin thinking about next year. Based upon the vaccination schedule and estimated COVID infection rates, we are planning that the 2021-2022 schoolyear will be a big step closer to normal. Thank goodness!
Too bad the weather this weekend will be a bit winterish, but hey, not every weekend can be as nice as last Saturday. If it was, we might start taking beautiful days for granted. If 2020-2021 has taught us anything, it is to appreciate the small things in life.
Warmly,
Suzan and John

2021 SPRING Sports Information
Welcome to the 2021 HCS Athletics spring season!
I hope you are excited about this mitigated/hybrid spring season that lies ahead. Thank you for letting your child participate in school sports this spring. With that being said: The HCS athletic department and its coaches completely understand if your child and your family need to take this season off to be home and stay safely distanced from others. We are taking our COVID 19 mitigation procedures seriously and want ALL HCS community members to stay healthy during this challenging time. Playing sports during a pandemic will bring new challenges for your athlete and our coaches and we are looking to parents/guardians for support in all of our efforts to keep everyone safe this spring. My hope is that everyone involved in HCS athletics takes a “one day at a time” approach to this upcoming season and exude extreme flexibility and patience. I am guessing that our athletic seasons will be fluid in nature with schedule changes that need to happen on a last-minute basis that is completely out of any of our control.
-Baseball/Softball will start on Monday, April 12th
-Ultimate Frisbee and Spring Cross Country (replacing Track/Field for spring 2021 due to COVID) will start on Monday, April 26th. Spring sports will end in early June. All of the information you will need for your HCS spring sports endeavors is below.
Note: We are expecting that all students that signed up for Track/Field will participate in Spring Cross Country (XC). We have used the Track/Field registrations to populate the spring XC roster. If your child was expecting track and field and is not interested in spring XC please email me and I will remove their name from the spring XC roster.
*All of the following information is subject to change at any time due to the Vermont State Agency of Education and Vermont Principals Association’s ever-changing response to the COVID 19 pandemic. If any changes do happen regarding middle school athletics you will receive additional information from HCS.
REQUIRED Athletic Forms/Wellness Forms:
IMPORTANT: All students participating in the school year 2020-21 sports need to be registered into this new/improved google form that is linked directly BELOW:
CLICK HERE for the HCS Athletics Registration Form- School Year 2020-21
The Hinesburg Community School Athletic department has moved back to using google forms to collect athlete/family registration information. The above link is to the new and improved Athletics Registration Form for the school year 2020-21. This form is required in order for your child to participate in any HCS athletic team and must be filled out each and every school year. Make sure to select all the sports that your athlete will be participating in this year. You and your child will fill this out and digitally and sign many sections, which require your consent and/or acknowledgment as well as for you to input your required insurance information. You will then SUBMIT the form. Once submitted, your child's registration will appear on our master list and they will be all set in terms of registration and their chosen sport(s) coach will receive their required information. Note: If you have more than one child playing a sport, you will need to do this online form for each child. The above link will be on the HCS Athletics/Activities website all year should you need to fill out another form (example: your athlete decides they do want to play basketball and you did not indicate that the first time you filled out this form).
The wellness form (link below) is optional this year for any HCS student that has played an HCS sport in the past two years. New athletes and 5th graders still need to submit one. If you are in the category of needing to get a wellness form complete by a physician, please send the completed form to Hinesburg Athletic Director Chris Shackett (cshackett@cvsdvt.org) either electronically or via hard copy to the HCS main office (attn: Chris Shackett, HCS AD). It can also be faxed to the HCS main office (802-482-2003, attn: Chris Shackett, HCS AD).

Kindergarten Registration Is Open
Champlain Valley School District (CVSD) is asking families to register their Kindergartners earlier this year, in an effort to get more accurate enrollment numbers for our schools. These enrollment numbers help us to plan our staffing needs for the upcoming school year and help us to coordinate our site visits for placement in the spring.
We really appreciate your help with registering your child early this year and we’re looking forward to meeting you at our Kindergarten Screening Day and Information Night in the spring if things open up!
Please contact Deb Lavalette at the Hinesburg Community School by emailing her at dlavalette@cvsdvt.org or call 482-2106 if you have a child that will be 5 years old before September 1, 2021.
CVSD COVID-19 Reporting Dashboard
The CVSD Dashboard is an online tool that gives families a chance to view of up to date data (updated each Thursday) from around the district concerning COVID-19. The tool shows a cumulative tally of testing and quarantine data for staff and students across the school district. You can access this information here.
