8th Grade Team November Newsletter
October 27, 2023
Stay Up-to-Date with our Classrooms!
Staying connected to our families is important to our teachers. In addition to the front page of our Canvas courses, we are excited to share this monthly newsletter with our families to keep you aware of upcoming events, activities, lessons, units, and materials from our classes! The 8th Grade Team has compiled this newsletter to share some of the upcoming experiences your student will be having with us. As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers! As a reminder, printed report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, October 27th.
8th Grade Electives
Art
Students have finished their charcoal drawings on brown paper. They did a great job learning and mastering the different types of charcoal and shading techniques. I can’t wait to display the work! We have since moved on to a clay sculpture project. Students can sculpt anything they wish to as long as it is; challenging, stable, built / designed well. 8th graders also have the added option to make a bobblehead (add a spring). We spent a couple of days sketching and planning and have now moved on to the actual clay! Things are very exciting (and messy) around here.
Choir
Choir students are preparing for JAM Fest this weekend! All information can be found at jamb-arts.org.
8th Grade is starting music for their holiday concert this week. They will be singing “Sing We Now of A Very Merry Christmas”, “Slow Dancing in the Snow”, “We Need A Little Christmas”, & “Two German Carols”. The holiday concert will be Tuesday, December 12th at 6:30 PM. Students are to be at the High School at 5:30 PM

Technology
The eighth graders are spending the entire month of November concentrating on their Playing Is Fun, Creating Is Rewarding project! This project involves coding, creating pixel art, doing online research, and pitching an idea to a group of people. At the end of the month, we’ll be presenting these to the class as a whole!

8th Grade Core Classes
ELA
We are currently in the middle of our Informational Reading and Expository Writing Unit. The goal of this unit is for students to write an informative text (in the form of a blog) as they examine a topic of their choice. Students will eventually identify a clear thesis statement for their blog, introduce their blog topic and subtopics clearly, organize their ideas, and develop the topic with relevant, well-chosen facts.
Last week, students worked hard to read through their sources and take notes that answered their research questions. This week, students have been working on drafting blog entries based on the information they have found so far in their research. Next week, we’ll have some peer editing opportunities, and we will also put our final products together in a blog platform. We’ll celebrate the end of this unit with our Bloggie Awards ceremony soon.
Math and Algebra
8th Grade Math
We finished up our module on Scientific Notation and Exponent Properties and are moving into module 3, Solve Equations with Variables on Each Side. In this module students will draw on their knowledge of solving two-step equations to help them solve equations with variables on each side of the equal sign.
What Students Will Learn in This Module:
Equations with Variables on Both Sides
Equations with Grouping Symbols
Students will write equations with grouping symbols (such as parentheses) on one or both sides of the equation, such as 3(x + 2) + 4 = x – 4( x – 3).
Students will solve equations with grouping symbols using the Distributive Property.
Number of Solutions
Students will determine whether an equation has one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions.
Students will write equations that have one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions.
Important Vocabulary
Coefficient - The numerical term of a factor that contains a variable.
Constant - A term without a variable.
Like Terms - Terms that contain the same variables to the same powers.
Solution - A value that makes an equation true.
Support your child’s understanding of writing equations with variables on each side by demonstrating how they can be used when choosing a cell phone plan. Discuss with your child the various types of cell phone plans and explain that some plans include a phone, and some plans include only service. With your child, investigate the cost of cell phones, the cost of plans that include cell phones, and the cost of plans that include only service. Help your child to algebraically model the costs associated with each type of plan. For example, if a phone costs $600 and a service-only plan costs $50 per month, your child might write c = 50m + 600 and if a plan which includes a phone costs $125 per month, your child might write c = 125m. For each equation, c represents the total cost and m represents the number of months. Have your child write an equation to find the number of months it would take for a person to pay the same amount for either plan. For example, your child might write 50m + 600 = 125m and find that m = 8. Help your child interpret their solution. In the example above, m = 8 indicates that, after 8 months someone would have paid the same amount for each plan.
Algebra
This quarter, we will be starting our next chapter on systems of equations. Students will build off of our unit on linear equations to find the solution to a system. As always, please access my canvas modules for extra practice resources and parent guides! The parent guides are amazing because they align to each lesson, give worked out examples and give extra practice problems with answers. We’ll get through chapters 4 and 5 this quarter and we will have a midterm exam before winter break. Much more info to come about that later.
Science
Students will continue to explore Earth’s history and investigate Continental Drift and Plate Tectonics to help understand forces that continue to define and shape our planet.
Social Studies
In social studies, we will continue to investigate the English Colonies in North America. This will involve activities about day-to-day life in the Colonies and how the Colonies were governed. Students will also actively participate in a Colony simulation. Students have the opportunity to create Colony and attempt to be the most successful in the class. Extra credit is won for students with the most wealth as a Colony. After the simulation, students will begin to explore the French and Indian War leading up to our Revolutionary War Unit.
Common Sense Media is an online tool that can help parents and students make informed decisions regarding media use. This tool can be used for many types of media, including books, movies, video games, and apps. Additionally, the “Parent Tips and FAQ” section can provide families with valuable support on facilitating social media, cell phone, and screen time use with their child.
