A Note from Mrs. Pitts
Dear RES Families,
On Friday, I led a school-wide assembly on our (teachers'/staff's) #1 job - SAFETY! I took this synopsis from the fabulous Mrs. Scally:)
Some topics were to REFRESH our minds, while others were to STRETCH our minds to think beyond drills/rules. Here are the key points from our assembly:
1. School-Wide Rules (RES Expectations), which help everyone feel "safe" on a day to day basis
2. RES Safety Drills (lock down, fire drill, reverse evacuations, etc.) which keep us safe in emergency situations
3. Health Safety - Did you know that sometimes caring means NOT SHARING? (ie. germs, hats, chapstick, etc.)
4. Emotional Safety - Everyone has BIG feelings at some point and none of us have to work through them alone. RES has many resources to help regulate those big feelings! To name just a few:
- Calming spaces throughout the school
- Caring staff
- Mrs. Arsenault who is amazing at guidance through those BIG feelings
- Office Staff (Mrs. Pitts, Ms. Staci, and Ms. Shari) LOVE to have visitors if anyone ever needs to just step away and take a break for a bit

Warmly,
Michelle Pitts

TALENTS BY THE SEA- Our 20th Anniversay Edition!
A Gallery of Poems, Short Stories and Art
2024 Patron of the Arts
Dear RES parents,
The “Talents by the Sea” literary journal is an annual publication, which features the best artwork and writing samples of Rye students in grades K through 8. It is the well-conceived concept of a group of teachers, community members, and parents, whose primary goal is to foster great writing and art in our students. For the many wonderful artists and writers in our schools, being published is their Super Bowl trophy or their gold medal for a competition. Each year, a free copy is distributed to all Rye students, teachers, and involved community members. We cannot do this without many generous donations. Our biggest donor every year is Author Dan Brown.
Please encourage your child to submit a written piece or any artwork. Cover art work is due by March 8th and will be voted on by the community. Inside art and writing have a deadline of March 29th. The submissions can be done at home or at school. Please let me know if you are interested in judging written work for the journal at jdefreze@sau50.org.
Contributions to help publish this amazing magazine, of any amount, are greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. You can return this sheet to the office. All checks must be made payable to: Rye School District, Treasurer
Sincerely,
Jacquie DeFreze

Penguin Lady Visits RES!
We had the penguin Lady, Dyan DeNapoli, visit recently. The children LOVED her! We wanted to send you the links to her two books if you were interested.

World Language Update
The second and third graders are off to a great start with their first French lessons of the school year in World Language with Madame Piper! Both grades are learning greetings and how to express their feelings in French. The third graders are "mailing" French postcards through our Rye Writes RES Program, where each classroom has their own mailbox. The second graders will interpret their messages! Excellent!
Penguin Lady Visits US!!!
THANK YOU PTA!!!!
From her Website:)
Renowned penguin expert, TED speaker, and award-winning author Dyan deNapoli (AKA The Penguin Lady) is on a lifelong mission to help save the world’s Threatened and Endangered penguins. This mission includes raising awareness and funding to protect all penguins.
One of the many threats to penguins today is oil pollution. Watch The Great Penguin Rescue, Dyan’s powerful TED talk below, about her role in the remarkable rescue of 40,000 penguins from the Treasure oil spill in South Africa. And to learn how YOU can help save penguins, click on the ‘Help Penguins’ tab in the navigation bar at the top of the page.

Lunch with Students
We do allow one family member at a time to have lunch with their child(ren) but this is very optional and we don't want families to feel pressured to attend.
- Email resoffice@sau50.org if you would like to attend with the date/time (starting October 1). It is important to anticipate who will be in the building. We love these opportunities for students and their family members but we will always put safety first.
- We do have a focus during this time...eating for energy and brain power!
- Family members must meet the child in the cafeteria and leave from the cafeteria.
- Lunch times are:
Kindergarten-11:45-12:10
First Grade-12:15-12:40
Second Grade-12:15-12:40
Third Grade- 11:15-11:40
Fourth Grade-11:15-11:40
