Mill Valley Weekly
August 24th, 2023
Hello Mill Valley Families,
Happy first day of school!
It was heartwarming to see countless smiles and friends reuniting. The positive energy was uplifting. The 2023-24 school year is off to a great start!
We hope everyone enjoyed the Student Summit opportunity at the start of this week. It is such an exciting time to meet new teachers, see friends, have the memorable school picture taken and just be back in the building!
On a different note, we wanted to share that there will be a fence installed on the land behind Mill Valley to create a barrier between Mill Valley and our new neighbors, Fleet Farm. In addition to the fence, trees have been planted which will fill in and improve the landscaping.
Sincerely,
Robin Schrot, Building Principal
Allyce Harris & Julie Hetzel, Associate Principal
Attendance Information
There are two ways to report your student's absence...
- Call the attendance line at 262-971-1830, press 2.
- Submit an Absence Request through your Campus Parent App or on your computer through Infinite Campus
Please note: If you you have a last minute change or early pick up, PLEASE do not use the Parent Portal Absence Request, rather call Kim or Kimberly in the office. We will inform the teacher of the change.
Once a month, you will receive an email from Infinite Campus detailing your student’s attendance history. All families will be receiving this email even if their child has not been absent from school. This email is meant to be a communication between school and home. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Deanna Nowicki, School Social Worker at deanna.nowicki@muskegonorway.org or 262-422-1131.
Good attendance habits in the early grades are strong predictors for future success in high school and beyond.
Change in Dismissal?
If you need to make a change in your student's regular dismissal plan, please fill out the YELLOW A Note from Home and send it to school with your child. If the change is last minute or same day, please call the office, 262-971-1830, so we can get the message to your child's teacher.
If your child goes to Champions after school and you are switching to bus or parent pick-up, you must also contact Champions directly to make them aware of the change.

Math Updates
We are moving into the second phase of a math pilot during the 23-24 school year. Some teachers in each grade level Kindergarten through 4th grade will be using the Bridges in Mathematics resource. This is the final pilot stage before moving to full implementation during the 2024-2025 school year. If your child’s teacher is piloting this school year, you will receive additional communication regarding the units throughout the year. Throughout the year please look for opportunities to provide input and feedback.
ABOUT STAR ASSESSMENTS
Students K-4th grade will be taking the Star Assessment between August 28th - September 7th. Star assessments help teachers better understand what students know and can do in the areas of early literacy, reading, or math. As a student takes the test, the software selects items based on the student’s responses. If the student answers correctly, the next item will be more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the next item will be less difficult. By adjusting the difficulty of the items to what students show they can or cannot do, the assessment is an accurate way to help teachers identify what skills students are ready to learn. Teachers use this information to guide their instruction.
•Star Early Literacy tests are used for students in grades pre-K through 1 (beginning readers who do not yet read independently or need early literacy skills assessed). There are 27 items and it generally takes fewer than 15 minutes for the student to complete the test.
•Star Reading tests are used for students in grades 1—4. Star reading has 34 items and it generally takes fewer than 20 minutes for the student to complete the test.
•Star Math tests are used for students in grades 1—4. Star Math has 34 items and
generally takes fewer than 25 minutes for the student to complete the test.
