Hawk Happenings
August 18, 2023
Be Not Afraid!
It was great having our Hawks back in the building, and we started the school year off with a great first two days.
Parking Spot Paint Party I love this tradition of Gibault! I think it's such a great way to feature the artistic abilities of our students to all who visit us! Thanks for supporting the Student Activities Board to those who painted or purchased a parking spot.
New Family Potluck Our new Family Potluck was well attended on Wednesday evening. Thanks to all who came together to share a meal together. We hope that by offering you the chance to travel your Hawk's schedule and meet the teachers, that you have a understanding of how things work and teacher expectations. Also, a huge thanks to Gibault Women's Club for sponsoring the event.
Parent Party on the Patio Don't forget about tonight's Parent on the Patio event! The parent party on the patio will be from 6PM – 9PM. Another great way to meet Gibault families! BYOB and chairs.
Paperwork We ask for your cooperation with getting the paperwork into the school office as soon as possible. You are welcome to drop it off or give to your student to turn into the office.
Full Moon Bike Ride Our Men's Club is hosting a Family Full Moon Bike Ride event on Friday, September 8th. The evening starts in our parking lot beginning at 7:00PM and the 5 mile ride through Waterloo begins at 8:00PM. There will be a BBQ stand for your snacking needs.
August 21 is the deadline to guarantee a t-shirt. So don't wait, sign up today! You can still sign up after August 21, but you might not get your t-shirt.

Human Support Services Human Support Services (HSS) is partnering with Gibault Catholic High School to provide embedded mental health support for all students. The service will be provided by HSS Clinician, Emily Larson, an alumni of Gibault Catholic High School. Emily is a very passionate clinician with experience working in an array of settings with students of all ages.
The vision of this partnership is for the services to be provided in tiers that may include: school wide wellness promotion, in-class discussion of coping strategies, and facilitation of discussions on social and emotional wellness. Some students who need additional support may be referred to the next tier, small group intervention. Finally, students who need one-on-one counseling, crisis intervention, and intensive case management will be provided on an individual basis.
The one-on-one services will involve in the moment support, in an effort to work through present stressors and allow students to better navigate the school environment. Students who feel they need more in-depth services can be referred to the main agency at HSS, with the support of the school based clinician. Engagement in clinical support is strictly voluntary but the service will be available to all students if they choose to utilize the service.
The clinician will also work in partnership with school teachers and the guidance office to provide trauma informed care and best practices related to navigating mental health needs of the student body. The goal is to meet each student in (on) their own unique journey and provide appropriate level of support so that they can achieve their highest potential. We are looking forward to providing support to the Gibault High School community.
Original Birth Certificates Thank you to all who have brought your student's original birth certificate in for us to see and then copy. We need to see all original birth certificates by October 1, 2023. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Free and Reduced Lunch Eligibility Household Eligibility Applications for the National School Lunch Program are now available. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, complete the attached application that you can find below and return it to the school office. Household Eligibility Applications were distributed to all students yesterday.
Bus and Class Fees Please pay all bus and class fees as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please reach out to the office.
Grandparents' Day Please let all hawk grandparents and special friends know that our Grandparents' Day Mass will be Friday, September 15th at 9:00AM in our gym. (Note: this date was originally Sept. 14th, so it has been moved.)
Dress Code We have been working hard to communicate the new dress code policies to the students. Yesterday, Student Council (Stu Co), led a dress code demonstration for the students during a whole school assembly. Stu Co members purposely violated new dress code policies, and the student body was asked to identify the mistake.
Dress Code Violations will be given to students who violate the dress code beginning on Monday. Please ensure your student’s skirts are at least finger-tip length. Violations result in detention. You can find the updates attached below as well as in previous emails and it is posted to our website.
Way to go, Mr. Schauer! Mr. Schauer received some exciting news earlier this week. We have been approved by the Department of Defense with a Stop the Bleed (STB) Educational License. This program teaches people how to properly use tourniquets for major bleeds. Gibault was officially approved and, we are the only high school in Illinois to be granted one and only the fifth high school in the nation to have one. Mr. Schauer is excited to weave it into the EMR curriculum! Way to go, Mr. Schauer!
Liturgical Calendar Attached below you will find the Liturgical Calendar for the year. This includes all mass and prayer service dates, class retreats, and more. Please mark these dates on your calendars. All school masses and prayer services are important for our entire student body and school community. Please avoid scheduling doctors appointments, college visits, etc. on these days if at all possible. Also, as a reminder, all Gibault students are required to go on a retreat each year. The easiest and best way for them to do this is to attend their class retreat. Please pay special attention to the retreat dates that pertain to your child/children. All family members are welcome to join us for masses and prayer services!
This message was also sent as an email from Mr. Ruppel earlier today.
Gibault Hawks Band Our Hawks will be participating in the Columbia Parade this weekend. For the band students, Mr. Ruppel sent this information yesterday.
"Our first parade is this Saturday! We are meeting at Gibault at 2pm. Transportation will be provided to the parade and back to Gibault for those who need it. More information is attached. Freshmen can borrow a hockey jersey from me.
We need as many students as possible to come to Gibault to help load all the equipment. However, if you live in the Columbia area, you can meet us in Columbia. The meeting location is the Columbia Masonic Lodge No 474, The address is 1207 N Main St in Columbia. Please try and park on the street (West Temple Drive) if you can. You should be there no later than 3pm.
The parade starts at 4pm. I hope a lot of parents can come out and cheer us on when we go by you!"
If you are attending the parade, make sure to cheer on the Hawks when they go by!
Scholar Bowl Attention Gibault students! Do you find yourself often being right when you watch Jeopardy? Have you been told that you are full of random facts and information? Do you enjoy showing that knowledge off to other people? If so, you may want to join Gibault's Scholar Bowl team! We have a JV and Varsity squad, so all grade levels are welcome. Please see Mr. O'Brien in Room 201 for more information and if you'd like to join. Our first major match is on September 18, so don't delay!
VENUE CHANGE FOR VOLLEYBALL & SOCCER The girls' volleyball game set for Monday, August 21st has been moved to Wolf Branch Middle School. This change was made by administration due to the excessive heat that is expected for Monday.
Also, the boys' soccer game next Saturday, August 26th will be at SWIC instead of Oerter Park. Game time is still at 11:00AM.
This week in sports Our girls & boys' golf teams and tennis all had events this week. The girls. Sport highlights from the week include: Tennis winning their season opener over Metro East Lutheran 8-1! Girls golf won all 3 matches this week! Boys' golf also had a great week. Cohen Jackson shot an even par 72 on Monday and came in 3rd out of 101 golfers. Go Hawks!
National Honor Society (NHS) Invitations Please make sure your student is checking his/her school email. NHS invitations have been emailed out to your student's school email, so we don't want any Hawk missing that information.
Enjoy your weekend!
Peace and Blessings,
Sarah Lanham
