Happy Holidays from Student Support Services
Something you want, something you need...
An idea that has become popular with gift-giving is "something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read". This is a great way to set limits, avoid overspending, and give gifts that the recipient truly would enjoy rather than a bunch of small things they like. It's quality over quantity. It's boundaries.
How can we apply this idea to the rest of the year? One way is to prioritize the "big things" and focus on those areas rather than getting caught up in the more minor aspects of daily life. Think of four categories that can be your mantra for gauging your day's success. At school, it could be "something to glow, something to share, something to build, show someone you care," or at home, it might be "some way to love, something to see, some way to relax, something to clean."
Whatever your mantra, the goal is to focus on the big things and practice putting boundaries in place so your focus isn't shifted.
We hope you get some time over the break to rest, relax, and focus on the areas that mean the most.
Classroom Strategies
Classroom Culture with Rigor
This teacher has combined classroom culture, reading standards, and writing standards through her "Minion of the Week". A different student is chosen each week and gets to introduce more information about themselves. The class also takes turns talking about the student's character traits. Each student writes a sentence about the student's character and illustrates it, then the teacher creates a book from all the pages and sends it home with the student.
What a great way to build classroom culture, identify character traits, justify their ideas, and build vocabulary!
Random Acts of Kindness
This teacher has incorporated random acts of kindness in her classroom. She has assigned a different activity each day. The students color in their ornament when they have completed it, and the teacher also places the same ornament on the classroom tree.

Foundations
Thoughts for January
Foundations teams should be planning at this time for the January reset or reteach of expectations for common areas after the long holiday break. It is essential to remind students of the expectations for each common area, as well as a review of bus expectations. This is a great time as well to refresh staff members on their supervisory responsibilities in common areas of the building.
Foundations Teams, don't forget about the following resources to help your teams plan!
