Back to School Start-Up
New Staff Orientation
The new faculty stepped into their role as a Gunter ISD faculty member for New Staff Orientation. To make the transition easier from summer break back to the world of work, our administration team donned some festive Hawaiian threads and made it feel like a vacation.During the two day experience, they were introduced to the policies and procedures for equipment and other things in the district, learned about our instructional expectations, participated in a scavenger hunt to test their knowledge of what they learned, and toured G-Town while riding on one of our school buses. They are true, blue Gunter Tigers now, and we welcome them!
Convocation 2023
Inspiration for the Faculty
Gunter ISD was truly blessed to have our Van Alstyne neighbor, Duke Sparks, Director of Community Partnerships & Athletic Operations in Melissa ISD speak to our faculty during convocation. Mr. Sparks has served the great state of Texas for 54 years in the education industry, so his knowledge and wisdom are definitely on target.
Every year, school districts across the state choose a theme to motivate students and staff. Mr. Sparks helped us to understand that choosing a theme does not work unless we internalize it and put it into motion. We cannot just paste it on a wall or print it on a t-shirt; we must choose to internalize and believe in it.
Thank you, Mr. Sparks! We are here to EDUCATE our students, which will fall into place when we look inward to EMPOWER ourselves and our students and VALUE ourselves and our students.
The faculty was excited to have the GHS Elite Band members provide some "pep" during the convocation. Hand clapping and Tiger Paws were held high! We are excited to hear them in the stands and see them on the field this year.
School Safety
Gunter ISD would like to extend a huge thank you to Jason Satre, GISD Chief of Police, who coordinated efforts with the Frisco Police Department to conduct a training for the GISD teachers and staff on safety training. The presentation was full of very important information and frank discussions on how to react during a safety threat. They also took our teachers and staff through a live scenario, which was very eye opening. The exercise helped us to understand the importance of our actions in any safety situation. We know the importance of safety in our schools, and this is just one more way to keep our students safe. Thank you to the Frisco Police Department for coming to Gunter to train us. Some older "Gunterites" might recognize one of the Frisco officers as a Gunter Graduate!

Spaghetti in a Bun... You might like it!
Mrs. Foster and Mrs. Keel’s third grade reading classes kicked off their unit by making meaningful connections with their mentor text, Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun. In the book, the main character Lucy is made fun of for the different lunch choices that she brings to school. Students connected with how Lucy had the courage to be different and had the opportunity to enjoy spaghetti in a hot dog bun to wrap up the week.
GES Students to the RESCUE!
Mrs. Harper and Mrs. Pelzel’s math and science classes had a really fun first full week! They learned all about place value and had their first STEM Friday! It was called “Help Save Fred”. Partners worked together to save Fred by using paper clips to fit Fred the gummy worm through the gummy lifesaver without using their hands. We are proud of their hard work!
Golden Spoon Award
Throughout the year, students at GES are awarded (by classroom) the Golden Spoon Award for using good manners and practicing good behavior in the cafeteria. Mrs. Martinez's class was excited to be one of the recipients of this prestigious award!
Readers are Champions
Gunter Elementary held the annual Readers are Champions Assembly honoring students who spent time over the summer reading. Student’s received a gift, cheers of celebration and a round of applause for their efforts.
Our summer readers include: Brayden Rice, Clara Youngblood, Colton Smith, Cason Smith, Truett Franklin, Desiree Moore, Eliot Thiel, Charlotte Egger, Kambrie Hamilton, Georgia Egger and Bailey Brotherton.
We have kicked off our Readers are Champions program for the 2023-2024 school year. Students may return their first RAC reading log, to their teachers, on or before October 11, 2023.
Hat Day at GES
Every Friday students can pay $1 to wear their favorite hat to school. All proceeds support local organizations.

Book Fair - Save the Date!
The GMS Book Fair will be held October 2-6. Watch for details leading up to the event!
Book Tasting in 6th Grade
6th graders in Mrs. Schroeter’s class participated in a ‘Book Tasting’ in the library! No worries, they really didn't "taste" the book, they just looked at and answered some questions about the books on each table. We know that you should not judge a book by it's cover, and this exercise helped them go through a process for choosing a book. They had a great time learning about different genres and, eating donuts. 🍩
Scientific Method in Action
The first "real" 5th grade science lab is always exciting! Mrs. Bon's scientists paired up to conduct an experiment with pennies and water. They are learning about the scientific method so they each chose a side of the penny to test and formed a hypothesis about how many drops of water a penny could hold. Then they conducted an experiment and recorded their findings. Tomorrow they will take those findings and put them to a graph. The penny pictured in the middle held 50 drops of water!

Chemistry students save teacher from becoming a ZOMBIE!
Mr. Moore's Chemistry students started off the year having to save their teacher from becoming a zombie. In escape room fashion, the students had to solve a variety of puzzles to find the ingredients in the lab to keep Mr. Moore from turning into a zombie! Nobody wanted a zombie as a teacher, so they worked together and solved the puzzles, and found the ingredients. We are happy to report that Mr. Moore is still Mr. Moore (the human)!
Tigers Helping Others through NHS
It's hot! But that didn't stop this group of Tigers from helping Enduring Grace Daycare Center build a playground. NHS members, Marshall Magers, Jackson Rue, and Brady Harris cleaned up the area, tore down a metal shed, raked leaves, dug a trench for a drainage pipe, put up railroad ties and moved playground equipment to make this a safe, fun area for children.
The three boys spent a Friday and Saturday, going above and beyond to help out a business in need. The owners were beyond grateful. They didn't do this because they had to, they did it because they have great big Tiger hearts!
The boys aren't finished with the project. When the fencing comes in, they will return to help get that done as well. Thank you, Marshall, Jackson, and Brady for having such a big heart and helping others. We are so proud to call you Gunter NHS Tigers!
Another GHS Tiger "brag moment"! Three of our NHS students helped Sunshine Learning Center in Pottsboro clean and paint the classrooms to get them ready for students. The director of the school, Karen Faulkner, felt very blessed to have our students help. Thank you, Mary, Julian and Brady, for using your talents to spread a little sunshine!

Cheer and Band
Thank you to our cheerleaders and the band for adding so much fun to our Friday Night Lights!
Meet the Tigers
We were excited to welcome the fall athletes, band and cheer to the 2023 season at Meet the Tigers. We had a great turn out with so many vendors offering food, drinks, fun, and Gunter gear. Students were introduced by name with the activity they are involved in. After all introductions were made, little tigers were able to get an autograph from their favorite GHS Tiger athletes. Thank you to the 23-24 tunnel crew for setting up the Tiger Tunnel. Thank you to the vendors who set up shop and provided some much needed food and drink on such a hot day. And a huge thank you to the GTFC and the parents who organized the event.
Our Gunter and Marion Cole were there taking pictures. Be sure to check their photo gallery for the best pictures!
Elmore earns Silver in Heptathlon!
GHS student, Abby Elmore, did not take the summer off; instead, she continued to wow us with her athletic ability! She competed in the Heptathlon at the 21st edition of the biennial track and field competition for U20 athletes organized by the Association of Panamerican Athletics. The competition was held at the Mayagüez Athletics Stadium in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico August 4-6. The heptathlon event is a track and field event in which each competitor takes part in the same 7 events (100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-meter dash, long jump, javelin, and 800-meter run). It is a two day event, and Abby started strong in the 100 Hurdles by taking 1st place in that event!
Event Breakdown for Abby:
- 100 Hurdles - 1st Place 14.22
- High Jump - 2nd Place 1.77m
- Shot Put - 3rd Place 11.30m
- 200m Dash - 5th Place 26.19
- Long Jump - 5th Place 5.34m
- Javelin Throw - 2nd Place 35.69m
- 800m Run - 5th Place 2:32.40
Abby earned the silver medal with 5186 points. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishment this summer and are looking forward to watching her during track season!
