Writing Prompt Next Steps
Some Ideas for Revisiting the Writing Prompt with Students:
Grades 1-2
- Unpack a section(s) of the Narrative Student Writing Checklist with students. (from Writing Pathways by Lucy Calkins)
- Ask students to reread their small moment stories, and then use the unpacked section of the checklist.
- Have students spend time revising their pieces of writing, using 1 or more sections of the checklist.
- Read a mentor text that demonstrates a good example of one of the categories of the checklist.
- Have students set a goal for themselves in a specific area of writing.
- Have students read their stories to a peer or a kindergarten student.
Grades 3-5
- Unpack the NECAP Narrative Writing Rubric with students.
- Ask students to reread their paragraph or story and revise their piece of writing.
- Teachers and/or students can score the revised piece again, to help students see the area(s) of growth or continued need for improvement.
- Read aloud a mentor text that demonstrates a good example of one of the elements of the rubric.
- Have students set a goal for themselves in a specific area of writing.
- Grades 3-4: Use student exemplars for further discussion and small group scoring of writing.
- Grade 5: Review the NECAP Writing Rubrics for Response to Informational Text, Response to Literary Text and Report. Use released student exemplars for discussion and small group scoring of writing. NECAP Writing Support Materials
