LMS Family Update
August 3, 2023
Greetings Lockerman Families,
I am excited to be writing to you as the new principal of Lockerman Middle School! Some of you may know me from my time at North Caroline High School where I spent the last five years serving as Assistant Principal. I’m happy to be joining the amazing team here at LMS, and look forward to partnering with each of you to make this coming year a successful one. Middle school is such a unique time in a child’s life and can bring many new experiences, challenges, lessons and a lot of growth. Together, we will help your student navigate all of this and more. I am confident each student who enters LMS will experience success, and I look forward to celebrating those successes with you!
Completing our new administrative team at LMS are Mrs. Andrea Hill and Mr. Rondell Sorrell. They each bring a unique set of experiences and skills to the team, and will be a great support for our students and staff. You can read more about the administrative appointments below.
We are looking forward to meeting each of you and working alongside of you this year and for many years to come. We’d like to invite you to meet our new administrative team at Caroline Summerfest on August 18th and 19th, and at Back to School Night on August 29th. In addition, please feel free to reach out any time you have a question or concern. We welcome your involvement and are always open to conversation. It’s going to be a great year at Lockerman!

A Message from the School Nurse
The state of Maryland requires that all children be current on their immunizations. Before your child enters the 7th grade they are required to have updated Tdap and MCV vaccines (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis and Meningitis). Please check with your child’s doctor to make sure that they are up to date on all of their vaccines and provide proof of their vaccines to the school nurse. Per Maryland state law, your child will be excluded from school once they start their 7th grade year if we do not have proof of their vaccinations. The health department is offering a vaccine clinic here at school on August 17th as well as other dates and locations throughout the county. See below for more information.
Thanks, LMS School Health Room Staff
WELLNESS UPDATE
As you may have heard, marijuana (referred to as cannabis in legislation) possession and use became legal on July 1, 2023 for adults 21 and older, with certain limits and restrictions.
However, nothing has changed for our students in Caroline County Public Schools. Students are still not allowed to use or have cannabis in schools, and there is no plan to change disciplinary practices.
The CCPS Student Code of Conduct (policy and regulation) states that if a student is found under the influence of drugs or controlled substances, a teacher or administrator will intervene and respond to the situation. Related service providers, such as social workers, psychologists and counselors, are also informed.
If a student is using or possessing drugs or controlled substances at school, discipline can include anything from intervention by an administrator to suspension to expulsion. School police and related service providers are notified of the situation.
Those distributing or selling drugs at school can be suspended long-term or expelled. School police and related service providers would be alerted.
Regarding cannabis education in school, the subject is already a part of Maryland’s Comprehensive Health Education Framework and is addressed at multiple grade levels, and lessons vary depending on students’ ages.
