From Mr. R's Desk
BOBCAT NATION
I will say it again... instruction and discipline go hand-in-hand. If there’s quality instruction and it’s meaningful, students are more likely to stay on task but if there’s no instruction and/or it’s not meaningful, students will be off-task and disruptive. Instruction and/or learning should be from bell to bell and with a purpose. Providing a safe learning environment should be everyone's priority. Remember, classroom management begins and ends with the teacher, not the student. Whatever behavior you accept will be on you.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT TIPS FROM MR. R
- Lesson plan wisely to avoid issues. Students should be engaged for the full 50 minutes. If you shortchange your students, they will shortchange you and your lesson.
- The teacher must observe, supervise, and monitor all students. Although it’s tempting to sit at your desk, keep in mind that it’s also an invitation for your students to get off task.
- Some type of seating arrangement should be considered. This is strongly recommended for a 1st-year teacher.
- Classroom rules should be visible.
- Expectations should be clearly communicated to avoid confusion. Everyone should have procedures in place: restroom passes, tardy logs, how students are to respond to a teacher, pencil sharpener, textbooks, fire drills, testing procedures, group work, classroom dismissal, lectures, videos/presentations, etc.
- Redirect off-task behavior immediately. Do not let things escalate.
- Be firm, fair, and consistent… every day for the entire school year.
- Establish verbal/non-verbal cues.
- Promote positive behavior.
- Involve parents to assist you with unwanted behaviors.
- Never get into a power struggle with a student. Be the adult and let it go.
- Not every student will like you. Don't take it personally.
- Never embarrass students and follow the Golden Rule. How would you like to be treated?
