Volume 1 - Fall Issue - November 2016
Message from Dr. Trenton T. Hansen
It is my pleasure to provide you with this update on completed and upcoming projects taking place throughout our District. It has been a very busy year, preparing for the first phase of 21st century modernization projects as part of the $144 million Measure EE bond passed by voters in November 2014; and, most recently, receiving state architect approval to construct our exciting new kindergarten through eighth grade school site, which will be paid for through a combination of community facilities district revenue and lease revenue bonds.
We hope you share this information with your community. To stay updated on all future projects and planning, please follow us on Twitter @jusdplanning.

Districtwide Raptor Visitor Management System
JUSD has began using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all its district schools. The visitor management system enhances the current campus safety program. Part of keeping students and staff safe is knowing who is on campus at all times. The Raptor system allows the district and schools to manage this information and increase the safety and security of our students and staff through a comprehensive check in and check out system for visitors, and volunteers. All visitors to schools sites must be scanned into the system and obtain a visitor badge.

New District Programs
Pacific Avenue Academy of Music (PAAM)
PAAM is the first school of its kind in Riverside County. Expert instructors incorporate music into all aspects of student learning. Research has found that learning music improves a range of skills in children, from math and spatial relationships to verbal memory and reading performance. Studies have also correlated music instruction with better brain development and academic achievement.
Since Fall of 2015, JUSD has offered Beginning Violin at Ina Arbuckle, Rustic Lane, Pacific Avenue, and West Riverside elementary schools. This year, the program will expand to Mission Middle School where Advanced Violin and Cello will be added. The goal is to build each year towards an ambitious, 10-year plan for a full symphony orchestra at Rubidoux High School.
Dual Immersion
JUSD has expanded its award-winning Dual Immersion (DI) program to Pedley Elementary. Registration for the program, which educates children in both English and Spanish starting in kindergarten, is now open. The JUSD Dual Immersion Program, founded in 2007 at Sunnyslope Elementary, has expanded over the years based on public demand and student success in the coursework. Students in the program are held to the same rigorous California Academic Standards as all other students – and state testing data show that DI students do as well or better than pupils in English – only classes. Students may also earn the State Seal of Biliteracy upon graduation. In 2013, the program earned a Models of Academic Excellence Award from the Riverside County of Education.
As of the 2015-2016 school year, Rubidoux High School began offering a brand new career technical education program in the health and medical field. The MAAP Program helps students gain an edge over the competition. With only a few classes, students can earn a state board approved MAAP certificate along with their high school diploma. This program, which is equivalent to vocational college classes, is free to students.
In October 2015, Nueva Vista High School launched its new welding program. The NVHS Welding Program, which partners with Riverside Community College, is the only program of its kind in the region. This hands-on program offers college credit towards an undergraduate certificate in Welding Technology at RCC.
Thanks to the passing of Bond Measure EE, the ‘C’ wing of the campus will be modernized to create STEAM-friendly learning spaces. The project will consist of two phases. The first phase will cover modernization of the southern portion of the building, creating spaces for a business/finance classroom, a prototyping classroom, a "maker space" with a glass roll-up door, a collaboration conference space, an innovation lab, and a break-out "tech room." The second phase is still sitting on the drawing table, yet, in the works is a renovated auto shop, auto classroom, and biotechnology/agriculture classroom.
JVHS Athletic Facilities Upgrades
The JVHS football team got to play (and won - Go Jags!) their first home game on new artificial turf. The new turf was installed as part of the stadium renovation project and was partially funded through rebates from SoCal Water Smart and Western Municipal Water District. The renovation was completed in two phases. In phase 1, artificial turf was installed, underground utilities were upgraded, ADA upgrades on path of travel were made, and ornamental fence and gates were installed. In phase 2, the scoreboard was installed, the monumental sign was constructed, additional ornamental fence was installed, landscape was renovated, and a perforated metal screen wall was constructed. In addition, concession stands were repainted to white and blue. Click below to watch a drone footage of the new stadium.
Jurupa Valley High School Tennis Courts
JVHS' tennis courts received some TLC during the summer. Thanks to deferred maintenance funds, all five tennis courts were power washed, hydro blasted, patched, and caulked. The courts received a new paint job to match the school colors. As a finishing touch, new window screens with the school logo and emblem were attached to the surrounding fence.
Baseball & Softball Dugouts
JVHS baseball and softball dugouts and backstop were painted blue and white in the summer.
Gym
Our custodial team works hard to keep our schools in great shape. This past summer, the custodial crew at JVHS did an amazing job at prepping the gym for the first day of school. What makes the gym look so impressive is the detail work put in to shine those floors. Just take a look at it for yourself!

Digital Gateway Initiative
Jurupa Unified has launched its Digital Gateway Initiative, providing each student in grades 2-12 with a Chromebook to take to and from school. Each Chromebook is monitored and filtered to protect students while online. The Digital Gateway goal is to increase student engagement and productivity through personalized learning and equal access to technology, 21st century skill development in collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, digital literacy and global awareness. Digital Gateway was funded by short-term financing proceeds from the Bond Measure EE.
Wireless Upgrades
Measure EE has funded districtwide Wireless Network Upgrades. All school sites in the district are undergoing these upgrades that will provide a connection ten times faster than the previous network.
Stone Avenue ES New 2 Story Classroom Building
Due to the success of the Dual Immersion (DI) Program, Stone Avenue Elementary School received a new two story, eight classroom building. Project started August of 2015 with construction finalized just in time for classes this school year.
Upcoming New K-8 School
Using developer fee proceeds from the area and lease revenue bond funding (not Measure EE bond proceeds), the district is planning to build a K-8 school near the new housing developments at Bellegrave and Wineville. The recently District State Architect approved plans entail a new two-story school campus designed to house up to 1,050 students and consisting of one site built wood frame building, shade structures, and all associated site developments such as parking lots, playgrounds, and site fences. Construction is scheduled to begin December of 2016, estimated to last 16 months, and scheduled to finish sometime in Spring of 2018. Student occupancy is planned for 2018/2019 school year. Upcoming Construction Projects
Patriot High School Field Restrooms
Patriot High School will receive a brand new 480 square foot modular athletic field restroom and concession building. This project will consist of exterior lighting and updated handicap access to the facility. The project will be completed in a single phase and construction is scheduled to start in the next couple of weeks. This project will be funded from Special Reserve for Capital Outlay.Data Center
The construction of the Data Center is currently underway and scheduled to be complete by Winter of 2016. This building will provide a centralized location for SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) trunks. With SIP trunking in place, the district will be able to eliminate traditional analog telephone lines resulting in a substantial costs savings. Another use for this building is environmental control for maintaining temperature, humidity, and other physical qualities of air within a special range in order to allow the equipment housed in the data center to perform optimally throughout its lifespan. Lastly, this new building will provide emergency backup power system to increase reliability of the network in the event of a power outage.
Parent Center
Jurupa Unified School District has DSA approved plans for a new Parent Center. This building will house two parent center/technology training rooms, a lobby and receptionist area, a registration area, a kid's play area, four special services rooms, two special education rooms, two language rooms, two conference rooms, a data room, a staff workroom and a parent workstation area. The location for this new building will be right behind the Education Center Building off of Jurupa Road. Construction is scheduled to start late December 2016, to last 7.5 months, and scheduled to finish August of 2017.Propositions
Over the past several years, JUSD has successfully completed three phases of projects to comply with energy efficiency and sustainability as part of its Proposition 39 plan. Phase I improvements included: 400 HVAC unit replacements, 10,878 solar panels at 9 sites, 32 shade canopies over 1,000 covered spaces, and 21,000 light retrofit installation at 20 schools. Phase II consisted of 2,640 ground mounted solar panels at Mission Middle School and 2,760 ground mounted solar panels at Nueva Vista High School. Phase III included 45 HVAC unit replacements, 2 high school swimming pool motor retrofits, 1,700 exterior lighting upgrades, 2 new high school gymnasiums lighting systems retrofits, and replacement of emergency lighting backup systems. Phase IV was recently approved by the Board and will include transformer replacements, interior LED lighting, and a new solar structure at Glen Avon Elementary.
Prop 51 is a statewide school bond that will help to repair, upgrade, and improve California’s K-12 public schools and community colleges. Yes on 51 is critical to repairing and upgrading older schools, relieving classroom overcrowding, and job training for returning veterans. Many neighborhood schools throughout California are old, outdated and need repairs. Proposition 51 makes students a top priority by repairing and upgrading older schools, addressing a long backlog of basic health and safety practices, like earthquake retrofitting, relieves classroom overcrowding, upgrades libraries, science labs, and classroom technology, and provides job training and vocational facilities for students and veterans. Proposition 51 goes before voters on the November 8, 2016 ballot.
