Campus Ministry Family Newsletter
September, 2023
Welcome!
Welcome to the first Campus Ministry Family Newsletter of the 2023-24 school year! A special welcome to our freshman and transfer student families. It has been lovely to meet and pray with many of you during orientation sessions and at the Freshman Family Mass!
The Campus Ministry Theme for this school year is "Make your own FIAT! Say YES to God!" “FIAT” is a Latin word for “Let it be done.” It was Mary's response to the angel Gabriel when she was asked to become the mother of Jesus. “Let it be done unto me according to Your Will” refers to Mary's “Yes” to God.
As we explore this powerful theme this year, we begin this quarter by focusing on the first letter of FIAT: F stands for FORTITUDE! Fortitude is not just courage, but listening to the Holy Spirit within us saying, "Don't be afraid, I will be with you." The Holy Spirit gives us this gift and makes it possible for us to follow God's will, even if it is not easy. I will be offering some opportunities to investigate FORTITUDE throughout this quarter.
I will be sending out this newsletter once a month to keep parents and caregivers informed and engaged in our Campus Ministry Program. STVM is a wonderful faith community in which you are all invited to participate, and so I hope the information in this newsletter leads you to information and activities that spur your faith. If you have any questions or ideas, please don't hesitate to contact me!

FIRST MASS - SEPT. 8 (Friday)
Our first whole-school Mass will be on Friday, September 8, at 9:30am. We celebrate the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary! For new families, you may be interested to know that we celebrate Mass in the arena, and students sit with their Mentor Groups. Theology teachers will be going over Mass expectations with our students, and I will do an introduction as well. I recognize this also might be a first Catholic Mass for some. This PDF is a great resource to explain the order of the Mass, what happens, and why it happens.
GRANDPARENTS DAY - SEPT. 27 (Weds.)
Grandparents are invited to a Grandparents Day Prayer Service at STVM on September 27 at 1:30pm. This Prayer Service will last about 30 minutes and will be followed by a reception for the grandparents and their student grandchildren. Any students who don't have a grandparent in attendance will be returning to Mentor Groups, where they will complete service projects organized by Campus Ministry. RSVPs are due Sept. 20. If you have questions, please contact Advancement Associate Anne Jorgensen at ajorgensen@stvm.com or (330) 253-9113.
WEEKLY/MONTHLY FAITH SHARING
Our Marianist LIFE student group offers several recurring opportunities for students (and sometimes families!) to share their faith.
Every Friday morning, other than First Friday Mass days, our Marianist LIFE students will meet in the Chapel to lead the praying of the Rosary. Parents/guardians and students are always welcome!
Every Wednesday, Marianist LIFE will also be doing "5-minute prayer" in the LRC. It will begin at 3:05 and end at 3:10.
First Friday Masses will begin in October. Parents/guardians and students are invited to join us at 7:15am in the Chapel for Mass on the first Friday of the month.
SUPPORT CAMPUS MINISTRY
Week of September 4
Make or send in cookies/cupcakes to celebrate Mary's B-Day with our student body on September 8. Sugar cookies with blue icing and vanilla cupcakes with blue icing are preferred. If you can help, please let us know here.
Ongoing -- Snacks Needed!
Hospitality is a hallmark of the Marianists, and students especially love hospitality when it comes in the form of snacks at school! I always keep a supply of snacks in the Campus Ministry Office, which is a great way to build relationships with students. So please let your students know that they can always find hospitality and a snack at the Campus Ministry Office! Any donations to the cause are always greatly appreciated! In the next newsletter, I will be sharing a SignUp Genius where parents can sign up for specific items.

Service Notes
While Campus Ministry is frequently involved in community service, Mr. Dan Larlham is the school's Director of Service Integration, which means he coordinates the program that requires students at all grade levels to complete 25 hours of service each year. Mr. Larlham (dlarlham@stvm.com) is happy to answer any of your questions about these required service hours. For your reference, he has compiled this list of Recent Service Opportunities. This will be updated for this year but will still be located at this link. Also FYI, the school is using a new program called Mobile Serve to collect service hours this year. Mr. Larlham is working to roll this out to all students and staff. Students have already been sent an email to claim their Mobile Serve account. More information on service opportunities will be forthcoming!
Marianist Moment
St. Vincent - St. Mary is a Catholic school in the Marianist tradition. Our STVM Mission says: In the spirit of the Gospel, we are committed to educate the whole person; to lead and to serve, enlightening the mind, developing the body, touching the heart, and inspiring the soul. Our sponsorship with the Marianists is meant to enhance and give a specific charism and characteristics to enliven and animate that Mission each day. A charism, or spiritual gift, is an extraordinary power given by the Holy Spirit for the good of the church.
The Marianist Charism guides how Marianists live and how we serve in our ministry. The Marianist Charism is made of these Five Pillars:
- We are People of Faith
- We are Followers of Mary
- We are People of Community
- We are Discipleship of Equals
- We are Leaders of Mission
Our 5 Characteristics of Marianist Education include:
- Educate for Formation in Faith
- Provide a Quality and Integral Education
- Educate in Family Spirit
- Educate for Service, Justice, Peace, and the Integrity of Creation
- Educate for Adaptation and Change
Throughout the year, this space will give information about the all things Marianist and STVM, but we also invite you to download the Marianist App for lots of great resources and information.
Please take a moment and read this article to get to know Blessed William Joseph Chaminade better and why he formed the Society of Mary, a.k.a. the Marianists.
It is also important to understand why we, as Catholics, hold Mary in high esteem, call her our Mother, and ask for her intercession. This short video with Fr. Mike Schmitz gives a good introduction and explanation to help us to understand our relationship with Mary.
