12 Students Earn Illinois Seal of Biliteracy
Twelve Urbana High School graduates from the Class of 2021 earned the prestigious Illinois State Seal of Biliteracy. They are:
- Kenia Bravo – Spanish
- Kira Buford-Rucker – Spanish
- Diego Carrillo – Spanish
- Kathryn Choate – German
- Foziea Garada – Arabic
- Banan Garada – Arabic
- Dimitrios Glaros – German
- Theodore Johnson – French
- Lucah Kloster – Spanish
- Michael Mendoza-Perez – Spanish
- Caroline Thies – German
- Francky Maemble Ntomb – French
The State Seal of Biliteracy program recognizes high school graduates who have attained a high level of proficiency in English and in one or more foreign or world languages. The seal is designated on the student’s diploma and transcript.
Additionally, five Urbana High School graduates from the Class of 2021 earned a Commendation toward Biliteracy. They are:
- Foziea Garada – French
- Banan Garada – French
- Framiel Kashila – French
- Armand Lubadi – French
- Oceanne Mnyampara – French
The commendation toward Biliteracy is awarded to students who demonstrate progress toward biliteracy, but do not fully meet the requirements of the Seal of Biliteracy.
Two of our 2021 seniors earned both a Seal of Biliteracy and a State Commendation Towards Biliteracy.

Urbana High School Band Room Expansion
Scot Wachter, IGW discussed plans to expand the current band room to allow more physical distancing.

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS Training) Update
This falls under the District SMART Goals #3 and #4.
District SMART Goal #3: Literacy Goal: Identify literacy standards/skills across all grade levels
District SMART Goal #4: Equity Goal 1: Provide equitable access to culturally responsive curriculum, as well as utilizing equitable assessment practices in order to ensure social and academic advancement through educational opportunities.
NEXT STEPS:
Literacy Goal:
- Identify and align, horizontally and vertically, literacy standards/skills across all grade levels.
- Create a Cohort of 40 educators that will make a two year commitment to the LETRS coursework
- Individuals may choose stipend or Board Credit
- Training will consist of self pace virtual lessons and an interactive live session each month.

Education Pathway Opportunity
Kimberly Norton, Assistant Superintendent of Student Learning reviewed student
opportunities through the Education Pathway Program.
USD116 has several partnerships in progress to promote opportunities for students
ECCA (Early College Career Academy)
- The Early College and Career Academy (ECCA) is a program for high school juniors and seniors to earn dual credit, all while gaining skills in several different Parkland College degree programs.
- Education Pathway is one of ten different paths students may choose with ECCA.

12.2 Resolution to Approve Urbana School District #116’s 2021-2022 Return to School Plan
Superintendent Ivory-Tatum, will request approval of a resolution regarding the 2021 return to
school plan. APPROVED
Call for future special/executive meetings.
- August 24, 2021 - Virtual League of Woman Voters Board Vacancy Forum at 6 p.m.
- August 31, 2021 - Special Meeting/Executive Session at 6 p.m.
