Take a closer look at our schedule for the year to make sure you are prepared and know where you are going!
September is Attendance Awareness Month
Counseling Department Information
From Counseling:
Mrs. James and Mr. Carr are so excited to see everyone this year! We will be getting around to all the classrooms over the next few weeks to say hello. In the meantime, if your student needs to request to see one of us, there are request forms in the main office that can be filled out. The office secretaries will place those in our door baskets and we will send for your student sometime during the day.
The deadline for class change requests has now passed. If you have questions or concerns about your student in a particular class, consider reaching out to that teacher and/or your child's counselor to see what we can do to help your student be successful.
You will be hearing more from us in coming weeks but for now...WELCOME to the 2022-2023 School Year at LMS!! It's going to be a GREAT year!

What is A Day and B Day?
Lynchburg City Schools will utilize a block schedule this year. At the middle school level, this means that eight blocks/classes will be spread across two days. Students will attend their 1st - 4th blocks on A days and their 5th - 8th blocks on B days. Students will attend their homeroom (also called Jaguar Period) in the middle of each day! The A and B days will alternate consistently.
What is the Jaguar Period? When does it occur?
We are excited to be able to offer an advisory period this year. All students will go to their homeroom at the conclusion of 2nd (A day) and 6th (B day) blocks. During this period, students will have the opportunity to engage in SEL (social emotional learning) activities, reading extension and relationship building with their homeroom/Jag Family. Students will also visit the cafeteria for lunch during their Jaguar/Homeroom period.
Will my student be using a locker this year?
7th and 8th grade students will be assigned a locker by their homeroom teachers at the start of the school year and will be required to place their backpacks and other bags in their lockers at the start of each day. 6th grade students will be assigned a locker by their homeroom teachers a little later into the year and will carry their bags or be given additional instructions from their teachers until lockers are assigned.
LMS is fortunate to have the following Academic Support Classes available this year.
We will be providing 12 different support classes (in addition to our special education resource classes) this year to continue to assist students in filling in any gaps evident in reading or math ability. These include: Enrichment 5 (reading support), Enrichment 6 (math support), Rise English and Rise Math courses at each grade level. A collection of data has been used to identify students who will be enrolled in one of these classes.
What are Enrichment 1, 2, 3, and 4 classes?
Enrichment Classes will be our classes of Innovation. They are semester-long classes that are randomly assigned that provide your student with the advanced opportunity to prepare for some high school electives. We are working to marry some of our Enrichment (or ELT) classes with some future high school options to peak interest and foster skills. Encourage your child to embrace the opportunity and look forward to the second semester when they will get to try an additional option. We have some great activities and engaging content planned for this year.
Can my student choose a different Enrichment class?
Students are placed in enrichment classes based on the student’s schedule. These cannot be changed. The class and teacher will change at the end of the first semester.
What is the difference between Electives and Enrichments?
Elective classes are student selected and must be attended during each grade level’s assigned period (for example, all 6th grade students will attend Health/PE and/or their Elective during the final block of each day (4th on A days and 8th on B days). These periods can never change as elective teachers are teaching other grade levels during other periods. Enrichment classes are varied and are not selected by the student. Students are enrolled in enrichment classes (sometimes referred to as ELT) based on their schedule and these classes must fit in and around their core class periods.
Can my student choose a different elective?
Students will have the opportunity to fill out a “Course Request Change Form” for the first 10 school days. These forms will be located outside the counseling department offices. Your student can make a request for a class change by filling out this form and placing it in the basket. Elective class changes will be made based on availability.
Will my student be changing clothes for gym class this year?
At this time, no one will be changing clothes for their gym class. Comfortable/sturdy shoes should still be used for gym class.
What do I do if I want to have a parent/teacher conference?
When you have questions about your student’s performance or obstacles in a certain class, please contact that teacher. If the time comes when you feel that a meeting with all your child’s teachers is needed, you may contact the school counseling secretary or counselor to help set a date and time when this can occur. This usually must happen during the school day.
What is the SPOT store and what are PBIS points?
LMS is a VTSS school. While participating in the Virginia Tiered Systems of Support, we utilize a number of positive behavior strategies. Research shows that when positive behaviors are routinely reinforced, negative or unwanted behaviors are reduced. We have purchased an online platform (PBIS Rewards) that will allow us to reward students with “points” for demonstrating our school’s expectations. Points are awarded into a student's virtual bank and can be used to purchase items in the SPOT store, enter raffles or even attend special events. Your student will receive more information about this in the coming days. (Donations welcome!)
PTO
We have a very active Parent-Teacher Organization who volunteer and support our students and staff in a variety of ways. Please consider joining the PTO. Call the main office for more information.
