November 2023
News from Mrs. Thode
Happy November! This is a great time of year to think about all you are thankful for. I am thankful for my Riverside family.
Thank you for your patience with the water main break in October and for coming to Parent/Teacher Conferences. It was so nice to see you all in the building.
End of the First Quarter:
October 26 was the end of the first quarter. Report cards will go home on Thursday, November 2. Please let us know if you have any questions about your child's progress. The second quarter is now under way and runs through January 11.
Attendance Matters:
With the first quarter completed, please be thinking about how many days of school your child has missed. If they have missed more than three days, they are not on track to meet our "Less than Nine and You will Shine". We want our students to miss nine or less days for the entire school year.
Is your child arriving at school on time? Most of our classes start with literacy instruction right away in the morning. If your child is consistently late, they are missing crucial reading and writing instruction. Please make sure your child is in school and is on time. This can make a huge difference in their education.
Literacy Parent Meeting:
Riverside Elementary School's Title I team is having a literacy parent meeting on Thursday, November 16 at 2:30. All parents and guardians are invited to attend. Books, snacks and activities will be shared with you at this time. We hope to see you there.
Cold Weather:
The weather is going to be getting colder. Please make sure your child has a warm coat, hats, gloves/mittens and proper shoes to wear. Students will be going outside if the real feel temperature is above 15 degrees. If you need assistance in getting any of these items for your child, please let us know. We would be happy to help if we can.
Questions:
Please call the office if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you all this school year.

Dressing for Cooler Weather
With the cooler temperatures upon us, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder winter. Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual, so it is important that students have the right winter weather clothing. When the temperature feels like 15 degrees or lower, students are kept inside for recess and activities. Students should be prepared for the cooler weather with a warm coat, hat, scarf, and gloves. If your student does not have access to cold weather apparel, please contact our school office.
Inclement Weather Reminder
The weather in Iowa can be unpredictable. If the weather requires us to delay the start of our school day, cancel school for the day, or dismiss school early, information will be sent to families through email, text, and voicemail. In addition, this information is posted to our social media sites and the District website.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to make the decision to keep their child home on any day they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a sincere reason why you may have to keep your student at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact our school office to let us know.
