We continue to get more excited for the beginning of the 2023-24 school year! Each new school year offers new possibilities. We look forward to this year’s journey and the growth that our students will make along the way.
This update includes important information and I strongly encourage you to take time to read the entire update. Also, please watch for updates coming from your school principal.
As always, please contact me with feedback or questions about the district. Public education is the cornerstone of our democracy. The district is proud to serve your family. We are grateful you have chosen to trust us with your student(s) education!

The Minnesota Free School Meals Program is now law! Northfield School District students will be eligible for one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day.
Why it’s important
Nutrition is critical to fuel student learning. The Minnesota Legislature made this program permanent.
The district is being reimbursed through a combination of state and federal funds.
What is included
Students will be eligible for one free breakfast and one free lunch each day. These are called “reimbursable meals.”
What is not included
Single item purchases and non-reimbursable meals are not included. Examples are an individual carton of milk that is not part of a meal, snack items, a second entrée, a second breakfast or second lunch, and meals that don’t meet the minimum requirements.
Teachers, staff, or other adults are not eligible for free meals.

⚽ Activities Scholarship Fund
As part of the 2023 priority-based budget process, the district has raised activity fees. Many people wrote the district during the budget process indicating they would be willing to contribute to a scholarship fund so that every student who wants to can participate in an extra-curricular activity.
Why it’s important
Educational-based extra-curricular activities provide critical life lessons for students that the classroom cannot replicate.
Our district is committed to supporting every student who wants to participate, regardless of income level.
Average fees
The fee for a high school activity fee ranges between $80 and $445.
The fee for a middle school activity fee ranges between $80 and $160.
If you could benefit from having a scholarship, contact the NHS activities office.
Contact the middle or high school activities offices for more information.

👤 Employment opportunities
The Northfield School District has numerous positions still available for the 2023-24 school year!
Why it’s important
Our employees make a difference for students and the community daily.
When we do not have enough staff members, it places additional stress on employees, can lead to burnout, and eventually, the loss of quality staff members.
Positions available
We have positions in the Buildings and Grounds, Child Nutrition, Community Schools, Health Services (building nurse), Ventures licensed child care programs, and many more. We are also always hiring substitutes!
Compensation
The Northfield School District offers competitive salaries and benefits for these positions.

Why it’s important
The handbooks provide information about how the district promotes positive behavior, holds students accountable for their behavior, and provides information about how school buildings manage their day-to-day operations.
Student Citizenship Handbook
This handbook outlines the district’s approach to discipline.
Building handbooks
These handbooks outline the day-to-day operations and management of each school.
These handbooks have been changed this year, moving from a PDF version to an online, mobile-friendly version. Please note that we are continuing to refine these changes.
