February 2022
Math Newsletter
Our goal is provide engaging and meaningful learning opportunities and resources to support mathematical growth for Arizona educators.
Happy February Math Friends!
February may be the shortest month in our calendar year, but it is a vibrant month of celebrations!
Black History is celebrated the entire Month. Lunar New Year is celebrated for 15 days. Valentine’s Day and Arizona’s Statehood are celebrated on the same day. We also celebrate our past Presidents, on Presidents Day. We can find Mathematics, Science and/or STEM stories in all these celebrations. There is a rich history of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) who have made lasting contributions to the Mathematics and Science community. How will you share these stories with your students?
As you think about your lessons and/or units this month - think about your students- are students in your classroom or schools that have YET to see themselves in the Mathematicians, Engineers or Scientist that are shared? History does not just belong to our Social Studies and World History colleagues. Are you sharing the diverse Mathematician of our past and present? Part of the joy and beauty of Mathematics are the stories that lead to the concepts, theories and formulas used today.
Students’ mathematical identities are just as important as the content they learn. Students will not learn at the high level we expect them to if they don’t see themselves as Mathematicians. How are you making sure that all your students are seeing themselves in Mathematics?
As always, please feel free to reach out to our ADE Math Team.
Take care,
Eboney McKinney
