Today, November 12th, 2021 marks the end of Quarter 1. Next week, the Infinite Campus portal will be closed from view, as teachers work to prepare for report cards, which will be available on Friday, November 19th. It continues to be a busy time here at HHS as the fall sports season has concluded, individual club activities have kicked into high gear and our thespians prepare for the opening of the drama "She Kills Monsters" next weekend.

Please remember that school is closed on Thursday, November 25th & 26th. On Wednesday, November 24th, we will practice our NYC mandated evacuation drill and dismissal will be at 2:30PM.

Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, has been recognized in the United States since 2011. To participate in Unity Day, individuals, schools, communities, and businesses wear or share orange to unite for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion to prevent students being bullied. At Herricks High School, Justice League and Herricks Peer Partners collaborated to spread kindness throughout the school by hosting an Anti-Bullying Event during all lunch periods in the cafeteria courtyard on October 20, 2021. Students and staff participated in Unity Day by wearing orange, writing positive orange post-its and sticking them to the lockers, spreading positive affirmation stickers throughout the building, creating an orange paper chain link of kind words, which was later on display for Herricks "Dig Pink" events after school, and creating inspiring sidewalk chalk artwork, to promote kindness, acceptance and unity. Music and laughter filled the courtyard on this wonderful Wednesday, and the message of bullying prevention was spread to all.

The Annual Herricks DIG PINK night (held on Wednesday , October 20th) was a huge success with the Herricks High School gym becoming a "Sea of Pink".

Dig Pink is the name of the breast cancer awareness rally that takes place in gymnasiums all over the country during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

This year the Boys' and Girls' volleyball teams joined with New Hyde Park & North Shore HS teams, respectively and the event raised over $2,000.00!

Proceeds from the event were donated to the Side-Out Foundation. Founded in 2004, Side-Out is a non-profit breast cancer charity that raises awareness and funds for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer.

The gymnasium was a "Sea of Pink", the spectators and team members were very enthusiastic in their support to "SPIKE OUT" breast cancer.

Student Government hosted a Painted Pumpkin Fundraiser Auction just prior to Halloween weekend. Money raised was donated to the Side Out Foundation with in collaboration with Dig Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. These pumpkins, hand painted by the students, were located at the front of the building and were bid on throughout the week. The pumpkins added a festive flare to the front of HHS.

STAC Art is proud to unveil our installation of ghost sculptures haunting Herricks High School-- and just in time for Halloween! They were created in collaboration with Ms. Zebrowski and Mr. Gioia. STAC students wrapped mannequins, and sometimes themselves, in chicken wire to get a human shape. They then used cheesecloth and tulle to give their sculptures an ethereal presence. Students of the Friendship Garden Nursery Program visited the halls of Herricks High School to go Trick-or-Treating! The students dressed up in their favorite costumes and visited classrooms throughout they day collecting treats.

On October 27, 2021, HHS' Habitat for Humanity club organized and hosted their first ever birdhouse fundraiser. Club members painted wooden birdhouses and signed up to sell them during the school day. The birdhouses, which were scheduled to be sold in 4 periods, sold out in less than 3 periods! The artistry on the birdhouses was outstanding, and they definitely won over the hearts of the faculty at the high school! The prices started at a minimum of $3 per birdhouse, and individuals could have donated any extra amount that they would have liked. The funds from this fundraiser went towards Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps people in the community improve/build a home and find stability in shelter. Great job Herricks! We successfully raised over 300 dollars which will go towards a sizable donation!

It’s that time again! Community Club is holding The Annual Master Gobbler Food Drive. We are collecting food for Island Harvest. We will collect the food and empty the box every Monday during our normal club hours. Food items should be non-perishable. If your class donates the most items of food, you will get a special shout on a commercial during the morning announcements!

The food drive will run from November 8, 2021 to December 6th, 2021.

Literature Club is now accepting submissions for OPUS 64. Poetry, short fiction (or excerpts from longer fiction), creative nonfiction, drama, songs, hybrid pieces, and artwork are all welcome. Below is a link through which students can find the submission guidelines/portal.

Congratulaitons to Sophmore, Kristiana Kolega for being selected to play on the Croatian U17 National Team as Croatia participated in the European Championship Qualifiers!

Congratulations to Head Coach Alexa Riegel who received the honor of being the Conference AA2 Varsity Girls Soccer Coach of the Year!

Today, The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance announced the 2021 School Winners for the Heisman High School Scholarship presented by Acceptance Insurance. Sana Nabi who plays Tennis and Badminton will move on to the State finals.

From an applicant pool of thousands of high school scholar-athletes graduating with the class of 2022, more than 5,700 have been named School Winners in the Heisman High School Scholarship competition awarded by The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance.

Herricks musicians proudly joined together again on the Herricks High School stage on October 27, 2021 in front of a socially distanced and eager audience of parents at the annual High School Tri-M Honors Concert. Each ensemble prepared a high caliber program featuring works encompassing a myriad of genre. Congratulations to all musicians along with their dedicated teachers, Dr. Geoffrey Taylor (Jazz), Catherine Birke (Chamber Orchestra), Louise O'Hanlon (Chamber Choir) and Scott Stickley (Wind Ensemble).

Congratulations to Leo Gomez that will be representing Herricks in the Chorus in addition to Liam Tan and Keneil Soni in orchestra.

Ashley Buttice - Assistant Director of Admission at Northeastern University, is the direct counselor supporting students from Long Island who are interested in Northeastern University. Northeastern has various options on engaging with students from Herricks who are interested in applying to Northeastern.

First, they offer virtual information sessions every week and students are welcome to sign up for one of those. In these sessions, an admission counselor like Ashley will provide an overview of academic and student life before diving into discussing the application process and financial aid. Attendees will also get to hear from a current student about their experience and there will be time at the end for a Q&A. Here’s the link to sign up for one of these info sessions if students are interested. Alternatively, students are also welcome to visit campus in-person and attend one of these info sessions and/or take a campus tour.

Second, Northeastern will be offering a Best of Boston series over the next few weeks where students will have the opportunity to interact with the university as well as some of the peer institutions in the Boston area. If you’re interested in receiving invites to attend this program, please sign up to be a part of the mailing list here.

Commitment to service is an important part of becoming a responsible citizen and an active member of the Herricks community. The President's Volunteer Service Award recognizes the valuable contributions volunteers are making each and every day. Volunteer service must be unpaid, and service completed must be documented on official letterhead. Service hours are recognized on a yearly basis (Jan.1, 2021-Dec.31, 2021).
