School Safety Drills
Mandatory Bus Evacuation Drills
State Law Mandates Bus Evacuation Drills to be conducted yearly. On Monday (10/31), students in grades 3, 4, and 5 participated in a bus evacuation drill. Three school busses arrived at the Lowell West and the driver went over the vehicle’s safety features and evacuation procedure. Below are more details:
Safety Features / Demonstrations:
1. On board first aid kit includes band-aids and bandages. Students may communicate with the driver if first aid is needed.
2. Front doors can be opened by popping the latch at the top of the service doors.
3. Emergency exit windows can be opened when front and rear bus doors are not safe to use.
4. Roof hatches may be used if the directed by the driver or if the bus is laying on its side.
5. Rear emergency door opening and locking demonstration.
Evacuation Procedure (From Front Door)
1. In the event of an emergency that require students to exit from the front doors, students should disembark the bus orderly and calmly by row.
2. Students should leave their personal belongings inside the bus.
3. Once the bus is empty, the driver will check the bus to make sure no one is left behind and meet students at the rally point and confirm all students are there.
On Monday (11/7), students in grades K, 1, and 2 will have participate in a similar evacuation drill at the Phillips Building.

Caregivers Are Invited to Attend Morning Meeting with Your Student
There are numerous benefits to starting each day with a morning meeting in the classroom that make it worth the few extra minutes each morning. It’s important to note that benefits are seen when morning meeting is a regular and consistent part of each day. Come join us and attend the morning meeting with your student. The schedule by grade is below. Please stay and have a cup of coffee with Mrs. Phelan and Mr. Chen and our SEL team. We will also review how Title One funds support teaching and learning at Lowell.
Here are a few positive outcomes that morning meeting can support:
- Builds meaningful relationships and establishes the trust (student to student and teacher to student)
- Sets the tone for a positive classroom climate
- Creates a space to highlight and discuss mental health needs
- Promotes the idea that all voices matter and are listened to
- Provides opportunities for teaching social, emotional, and academic skills
- Increases student confidence and self-awareness
- Motivates learners to do their best
- Supports academic learning
- Creates a kinder community
Simply put, morning meetings help all students do their best.
First Grade Morning Meeting is Thursday, November 10th at 8:30 am
Coffee with Mr. Chen following Morning Meeting
We invite caregivers to stay for coffee and conversation with Ms. Phelan & Mr. Chen and our SEL team from 8:30-9:30 am.
