A MESSAGE FROM MR. BEN PETERSELLI, PRINCIPAL
Glenbard West Community,
We had a fun and full September here on the hilltop, highlighted by our Homecoming Festivities on the 15th and 16th. Thank you to all of the students, staff, families, and community members that helped make it a memorable weekend.
This past Wednesday we hosted a Facility Planning Community Forum, where we invited community members into the school, provided tours, and shared some of the facility needs we hope to address in our next ten year plan. You can read more about our facility planning here.
Looking ahead, this month’s newsletter has important information on several upcoming events—including the PSAT/NMSQT test for juniors, fall concerts, parent-teacher conferences, and our fall musical SpongeBob SquarePants. Please read on for further details, and feel free to contact me directly with any questions or concerns.

MATTER OF PRIDE - SEPTEMBER
For those that are not familiar with our Matter of Pride Award, it was created over 30 years ago at West as a way to recognize students with outstanding character. This is the only award at West that focuses on a student's kindness, willingness to help others, going above and beyond for their school and/or community, and positive attitude. Basically, Matter of Pride recipients are what makes West the Best!
Congratulations to our September Award Recipients:

FROM THE HEALTH CENTER
Flu Shot 2023 - Now is the perfect Time to get your Flu Shot
Getting a flu shot for yourself and your family is very important, especially this time of the year.
It’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both spread this fall and winter. Healthcare systems could be overwhelmed treating both patients with flu and patients with COVID-19. This means getting a flu vaccine during 2023-2024 is more important than ever.
While getting a flu vaccine will not protect against COVID-19, there are many important benefits, such as:
Flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death.
Getting a flu vaccine can also save healthcare resources for the care of patients with COVID-19.
Most insurance providers, including Medicare and Medicaid, will allow you to get your flu vaccine for free. Some providers require a co-pay, check with your insurance plan.
If you have a regular care provider - pediatrician, primary care doctor, clinic - CALL TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT.
Here is a resource for individuals WITHOUT INSURANCE: DuPage Health Coalition Flu Voucher
Individuals without insurance can go to Walgreens, CVS, Jewel/Osco, and children can make appointments through the DuPage County Vaccine clinic (as of 9/17/20 the county does not have the flu vaccination yet). There is a fee for vaccinations without proof of insurance.
Here are locations of providers in the area that offer vaccinations for persons with and without insurance.
Jewel/Osco 750 Army Trail Rd. - Walk in - bring insurance card - $30 per vaccine if uninsured
Click the link for more information OR to find other Jewel/Osco locations near you.
Walgreens - Walk in - insurance card - fee for non-insured
Click on the link to find a location near you.
CVS - Schedule on appointment online - bring insurance card - $39.99 without insurance
Click the link to schedule at an appointment at a location near you.
VNA - insurance card/Medicaid - schedule appointment - sliding scale fees for uninsured patients
It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against influenza virus infection.
Vaccines are recommended for all people ages 6 months or older.
Get your flu vaccine early to protect you and your family!
Please check out your school’s website - Parent tab → Health Services → to see a list of other community resources near you.

College Application Season
The School Counseling Department is excited to officially kick off the college application season with several events for our upperclassmen. First of all, as of the date of this newsletter, we have well over 100 college representatives coming to Glenbard West to meet with our students. Last year we had over 200 by the end of the year, so make sure your student is monitoring our list of college reps visiting in SchooLinks! All signups can be done through SchooLinks under “school events.” These are excellent opportunities for students to not only gather more information on numerous colleges while at West, but also to get a face to face meeting with the admissions representatives for specific colleges to which they may be applying. Also, a reminder that the FAFSA application opening date has been postponed this year until December! The FAFSA is a graduation requirement (non-participation form available) and financial aid for college is on a first come first serve basis, so the earlier you file, the better. There will be several workshops in the District to assist with this process if needed. There will be FAFSA workshops for Seniors during Glenbard Hour Support periods and Financial Aid Application Workshops will be available in December and as the second semester progresses. More information about these workshops will be coming soon.
School Counselors presented this video to all seniors during Glenbard Hour Advisory on August 28 which covers a college application checklist and discusses the steps for requesting transcripts and letters of recommendation through SchooLinks. We also have a brag sheet students can share with their teachers to help guide their rec letters. In addition, we reviewed the timeframe for admissions testing, essay writing, scholarship applications, and financial aid. Afterwards, School Counselors began meeting with Seniors in small groups and/or individually to walk them through the SchooLinks and Common App college application process. We encourage all parents of seniors to have a discussion with your child regarding the meetings with their counselor and work with your student on their SchooLinks account to complete the Parent Input Form in order to enrich the letters of recommendation counselors are writing. All of our College Application Resources can be found here.
For Juniors, counselors are continuing the developmental process of college preparation this year by presenting this video during the August 28 Glenbard Hour Advisory. The video guides students on how to research college fit and develop their activity resumes in SchooLinks. Counselors will also be visiting English classes in the Spring to follow up with detailed college searches. Stay tuned for more information on ways to research colleges in the near future!
ATTENTION SENIORS AND PARENTS
How Does Your Student's Name Appear on the Diploma?
Action May Be Required!
During the online registration process for this school year, parents were asked to verify their student's name. The name will appear on the diploma exactly as it is entered into PowerSchool. If the name should contain special characters, such as a hyphen or is not accepted by the system with proper spacing, you must contact the school Registrar in writing prior to Wednesday, November 1, 2023.
Questions concerning this matter may be directed to Ms. Peggy Mirka at (630) 942-7484 or email peggy_mirka@glenbard.org.
SEMESTER GRADUATION MEETING
Students who have notified their counselor and will complete all graduation requirements by the end of first semester are invited to attend the Early Grad Meeting on Tuesday, November 14 during 2nd period in the MURC.
Early grads will have the opportunity to learn about the logistics of finishing mid-year, including participating in the annual graduation ceremony held in May. A representative from the Admissions Office at the College of DuPage will also be on hand to answer questions and assist students interested in transitioning to the College of DuPage for the second semester. This meeting is mandatory for early graduates.
Invitations will be sent to students via the School Counseling office prior to the 14th. Contact Mr. Tad Keely in the School Counseling Office at tad_keely@glenbard.org with any questions about this event.
2023 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI CELEBRATION
Ben Peterselli, Brian Spears, Ralph Covert, Molly Worthen
Jack Humble, Brian Spears, Olivia Pauer, Molly Worthen, Ralph Covert, Casey Sury
Brian Spears, Class of 1967, is being honored for his work as an attorney involving constitutional law, civil rights, governmental liability, police practices, and business litigation.
Brian graduated in 1967 from Glenbard West and in 1971 from the University of Michigan. He received his law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law in 1975 and practiced law for several years before moving to Atlanta, Georgia, where he was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1978. He has built his law practice around fighting against violence and racism by law enforcement and white supremacists.
Throughout his career, Brian has advocated for rights for homeless people, equal rights for persons with disabilities, and equal educational opportunities. In fact, he has brought more lawsuits against the Ku Klux Klan than any other Georgia attorney. With the Grady Coalition, he helped press the State of Georgia and counties served by Atlanta’s primary public hospital, Grady Memorial, to expand funding and drop prescription co-pay increases for low-income patients.
Ralph Covert, Class of 1980, is being honored for his work as a musician. Ralph Covert and his band, The Bad Examples, have been a staple of the Chicago scene since their heyday in the early 90's when their song Not Dead Yet was burning up the airwaves on Chicago's WXRT and on radio stations from coast to coast in America as well as in Holland. He has a writing credit for the song "Not Dead Yet," which is featured on the Styx album Edge of the Century.
With his family music project, Ralph’s World, he received a Grammy nomination for Best Musical Album for Children at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards. He has been on the front page of the New York Times Arts Section, and tours nationally, bringing his music to a new generation.
Ralph’s World is the mega-fun musical planet where kids rock, rock, rock and dance, dance, dance to their own and their parents’ delight. It’s the creation of our own Ralph Covert, indie rocker, songwriter, playwright, and children’s book author. He’s taken the same high-energy and super-melodic sense that he developed for his touring pop-rock band to kid’s music- basically, only the lyrics are changed for the ears of the innocent. His music and his sense of charm have won him hundreds of thousands of three-feet-and-under fans and their parents.
Along with G. Riley Mills, he wrote Sawdust And Spangles and Streeterville, both earning Joseph Jefferson Awards for Best New Work.
Molly Worthen, Class of 1999, is being honored for her work as an academic and writer. She is an Assistant Professor of History at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Molly received her B.A. in History as well as her M.A., Master of Philosophy, and her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Yale University. She also taught briefly at the University of Toronto before attending Chapel Hill in 2012.
Molly Worthen’s research focuses on North American religious and intellectual history. Some of her notable publications include
Apostles of Reason: The Crisis of Authority in American Evangelicalism, and The Man On Whom Nothing Was Lost: The Grand Strategy of Charles Hill.
“Why Universities Should be More Like Monasteries” and “Religion is not just for Republicans” were both published in The New York Times.
Besides writing and authoring books, she teaches courses on North American intellectual history and global Christianity, including a popular course titled “Sin and Evil in Modern America.”
Molly can also be found teaching through The Great Courses The History of Christianity II: From the Reformation to the Modern Megachurch. These are 36 fascinating lectures that trace the story of Christianity as it transformed from the end of the Middle Ages into the diverse global religion of today.

DR. DAVID LARSON, SUPERINTENDENT
Glenbard Parent Series' Free Programs Provide Support for Families
As adults, we seek guidance and advice about financial planning, our health and more, but it is not as common for adults to seek advice about raising children.
We are fortunate to have the Glenbard Parent Series (GPS), which provides a wealth of resources for families through free webinars. GPS hosts dozens of programs throughout the year, all aimed at helping children of every age thrive.
The programs feature national experts and local educators sharing information and strategies about issues that families face.
Each month, GPS presents several free programs during the afternoon and evening. No registration is required for these programs. The majority of the programs are webinars.
Student and Community Projects Coordinator, Gilda Ross, does a tremendous job coordinating GPS and lining up esteemed experts. These guest speakers discuss everything from teaching young people resilience to preparing for college to understanding anxiety, depression and addiction to managing stress and more.
There are webinars for families with teens, middle school children and children as young as age 3. Here are a few examples of GPS events this semester:
- What Happened to You: Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing A shift from ‘What is Wrong with You’
- Confronting Cyberbullying and Careless, Unwise Social Media Use in Tech-Savvy Kids
- The Power of Mindfulness to Increase Calm and Joy in Young Children
- How to Support Your Child’s Health and Wellbeing
- Congratulations, You’re Having a Teen!: The Guidebook You Always Wanted!
- 8 Failures/Setbacks That Can Make a Child a Success
Programs include events hosted by the Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee/Glenbard Parent Series-Spanish; Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee/GPS in Gujarati; and Bilingual Parent Advisory Committee/GPS in Urdu and Hindi; and Families United in Support of Excellence and Equity of all Students, Especially Those That Identity as African American or Black (FUSE).
Check out the schedule of GPS events at glenbardgps.org and plan to attend the programs that meet your needs. There’s no need to go it alone when support from GPS is just a click away.
