Dust Devil Weekly
Sunday, February 4
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
When I was a child the saying used to be “March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.” Didn’t anyone tell the universe that it’s only February? How can it already be February?
Despite the week’s rains, it was a busy week, as usual, around JMMS. Students built volcanoes, took a trip to Snapdragon stadium at SDSU, auditioned for the Spring Theater performance, completed their i-Ready diagnostics, and participated in another fun and exciting dodgeball exhibition!
Unfortunately we did have to postpone the dance due to weather but you have our word that the dance will be held in the near future, once the weather cooperates!
Enjoy this latest edition of the Dust Devil Weekly. We will see you all tomorrow!

Packets with all of the details are available in the office and more information will be coming home to all Dust Devil Families in an email so that you can encourage any budding entrepreneurs that you might have at home to participate!

Focus on: Test Preparation
An inescapable part of public school has long been the “high-stakes” “state tests.” Our students are required to take the SBAC exams in Reading and Math each year of Middle School. Eighth graders are required to take the California Science Test. This does not include the English Language Proficiency Assessment some of our Dust Devils are required to take.
As we prepare to enter the final trimester of the school year, and these Spring tests approach, JMMS will begin to tighten its focus on preparing for these important exams.
Here at Joan MacQueen, test prep does NOT mean that we will begin teaching to the test. Teachers will continue to teach the standards and students will continue to study them. Here at JMMS when we engage in test prep, we are exposing students to the form and content of the upcoming assessments. Students will be provided time to practice and familiarize themselves with how the test is designed, and how best to use the design to increase their performance. Students perform better when they understand what the true demands of an assessment are, and when they are familiar with the appearance and functionality of the test. Of course, by preparing this way, students also receive rigorous content practice as well.
So yes, in the coming weeks, JMMS will be ramping up its “test prep,” but rest assured our amazing teachers won’t be “teaching to the test.”
