March 2, 2022
Hello Canby families,
Welcome to another edition of the CSD Top 3, those three things we think you'd like to know, plus a wellness tip and the school lunch calendars. Enjoy!
Student Spotlight
Canby Firefighters paid a visit to Lee Elementary School recently to surprise fifth-grade student Kade Graves with a certificate and coin for acting with bravery and heroism when his best friend and fellow fifth-grader Eli Gorton-Green suffered a seizure during recess.
Eli said he has had a seizure disorder his whole life. For his safety, Eli’s parents make sure all his friends know about it, and that includes his best friend Kade. Kade’s mom, a nurse, prepared him for what to watch for and what to do if anyone were to suffer a seizure. So when it happened to Eli on the playground, though it wasn’t obvious to everyone, Kade knew what was happening. He alerted the adults that Eli was having a seizure, and he turned Eli onto his side to make sure he could breathe.
Eli will be okay and will even likely outgrow his disorder, but for now, his parents are grateful he attends Lee Elementary and has such great friends, like Kade. It was Eli’s mom, Laura Green, who contacted Canby Fire to honor Kade.
Classified Appreciation
During Classified Employee Appreciation Week, March 7-11, we have the chance to celebrate those staff members who keep our facilities safe, assist in educating our students, serve meals, and much more. From secretaries, instructional assistants, health assistants, translators, and speech & language pathology assistants, to custodians, nutrition services, technology staff, and facilities teams; we are grateful for our classified staff members’ talents, dedication, and service to Canby schools. Thank you, classified staff!
Educational Events
Dual Language Immersion Virtual Information Session
Is Dual Language Immersion right for your student? In this K-12 educational program, students learn to read, write, listen, and speak in Spanish and English. Hosted initially at Canby’s magnet school Trost Elementary, the program is open to all incoming kindergarten students in the Canby School District, regardless of home language or address. Students continue in the program at Baker Prairie Middle School and Canby High School. To find out more, attend the virtual information session on March 7 at 6 p.m. in English or at 7 p.m. in Spanish. Use the QR code at right to access the Zoom link.
Curriculum Renewal Open House
As we prepare to adopt a new social sciences curriculum, we invite families to an open house. Come learn about our curriculum renewal process, view potential instructional resources, and have the opportunity to ask questions about social science instruction in Canby. The event will take place at Ackerman Library on March 15 from 6-7:30 p.m. Drop in at any time.
As pandemic precautions ease, including face coverings becoming optional March 12, we want to encourage students, as always, to stay home when sick to prevent the spread of any illness. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other experts recommend that students stay home if they have any of the following symptoms: a temperature of 100.4 degrees or greater, vomiting, diarrhea, persistent cough or difficulty breathing, severe pain (like a migraine or severe earache), severe sore throat that lasts more than 48 hours, a significant rash, large amounts of discolored nasal discharge, or pink eye.
