This year, our annual Holocaust Teacher Institute, An Opus of Remembrance: Voices of Resistance and Diaries of the Holocaust featured Maestro Murry Sidlin and Alexandra Zapruder of the Defiant Requiem Foundation. Examining the work of composers and artists imprisoned in Theresienstadt, the Maestro provided area educators with a unique experience in his exploration of art as resistance through the lens of Rafael Schächter and his production of Verdi’s Requiem. In addition to Conductor Sidlin’s talk, this full-day seminar included presentations by Ms. Zapruder on children’s Holocaust diaries, Dr. David Patterson on the power of language, and US Air Force Interns, Cadets Haley Hoffmeister and Annalise Webber on artistic representation during the Shoah.

New Episode: "Ep. 43 The Forgotten Battle"

The 2020 Dutch World War II film, The Forgotten Battle, follows the actions of three young characters: a Dutch Axis soldier, a British glider pilot, and a woman affiliated with the Dutch Resistance, as events unfold during the battle in which Allied forces attempted to regain control of German-occupied Zeeland. In this episode, Dr. Emily-Rose Baker and Angie Simmons discuss the film’s representation of this historical event and the Dutch resistance movement.
